Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

Due to my father in the UK having to enter hospital for a hip replacement operation I have to stay longer there and change the return part of my flight from the UK in January.

This was with easyjet from Bournemouth to Geneva. It's clear with easyjet that they charge GBP30 to change a flight and any difference on the price on the new flight, which came to about £80 extra at this late stage.

As Zurich is a better destination for me, I looked into Swiss and BA flights from London. Now here's the nonsense and it's with Swiss. To fly one-way London > Zurich is £388 and to fly return is £114.

So of course people will buy a return and not use it. And they wonder why there are no shows and over bookings.

Meanwhile BA will do a single flight for £58. So Swiss lost a customer...

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

That's strange, but I had a similar problem with KLM before. I couldn't book a one way ticket, all I got was a expensive return-the-same-day ticket

I couldn't figure out whether I missed an option in the menu or what the problem was, so I booked with a different airline.

Btw, did you notice too that when you check the ticket price for a certain flight a couple of times from the same IP that the price is going up? Check again from a different IP and the price is low again...

Aah, that;s something I Will watch out for in future.

I wonder if you would have got a cheaper price if you had booked the return ticket for some distant time in the future? THat has worked for me before, when I have really only wanted to use the single flight out on a flight.

Also, at times the reverse has worked for me - booking two one way tickets has been cheaper than one return ticket.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

That's an age old problem. I think the term is discriminatory pricing. Round the world prices are cheaper than round trip tickets, half way across the world. You can buy a ticket from A to C via B for x CHF and B to C will cost you twice as much...It doesn't appear logical, but it is the airline's way of gaining markets share in given markets. There is also nothing to stop you buying the round trip ticket and only using the outbound leg. That doesn't work the other way around though...if you don't use the outbound leg your return flight is automatically cancelled.

Anyway, "logic" and "air fares" in the same sentence does just not compute...

I think the ticket would have been cheaper if the return flight had been at some point in the future. But I was stubborn - do not want return, give me a single one. And since it worked with another airline I didn't try much more.

Easyjet, BA et al used to do this, now its illegal in the UK (EU?). Good luck to your dad by the way.

Well, at least Swiss fly when there's a little snow on the ground. Most of the others were cancelled. A relative of mine was on one of the two flights scheduled last week and was very impressed with the service, said they were very organised. Compared to Pather's ordeal - I know which airline I'd choose, even if it does cost a bit more.

No one at Swiss is 'wondering'. It's a quite deliberate policy.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

It is so annoying as you can book a single with BA or Easyjet and not be charged extra and with Swiss it is impossible. I confess to doing this as I prefer the London City - Geneva route but if I drive back never use the return ticket. I book the return for a long time ahead and try to fit the ticket use in.
Hope that your father wll make a good recovery from the new hip. My older sisiter had a new hip and she is really happy with the difference it has made to her life.

And not just at Swiss, but across the board. It is accepted airline practice.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

the logic baffles me as well, and it's fairly common for people to ditch the return leg of flights, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airline...away_Ticketing

my biz class flight to Geneva for next week was $6k+ and return was $4k+, I was tempted to do a throwaway but ended up booking the return date for late '11 when I plan on returning home for the holidays.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

By the way, it's worth remembering that should you book a return flight with the intention of only using the return flight itself, most airlines won't allow you to use it if you haven't used the outward flight.

The airlines
A) try to bind their customers to use their service both ways
B) the airlines want their customers to book early

Yep i've noticed this too across a number of airline sites! I used to put it down to bad timing, but if other people are noticing....

AbFab - hope all goes well with your dad.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

When I've had to fly one way with Swiss, the only option was a business class ticket. Which was fine as my employer was paying.

I used to fly weekly to Birmingham from Basel - Monday to Friday. It was considerably cheaper to buy a long period return - a few months - then buy Friday to Monday Birmingham to Basel tickets, than to buy just Mon-Fri Basel-Birmingham tickets. Exactly the same flights.

My guess is that many users of airlines are corporate, and for some reason they don't care about paying over the odds.

I just found out today that you can get a full refund on flights canceled within 24 hours on Swiss. Good to know if you book a flight during an argument.
