Re: crime near Geneva train station

One another note, Geneva police sometime don't register / refuse to register what the think is not really valuable.....i know it sounds odd but this is the case.

Statistics are about reported crime. That isn't the same as actual crime. Sometimes a rise in reported crime doesn't actually reflect that real crime has risen but that confidence in the police and accessibility of the police has risen and more people are reporting crime. For example, how many people would report the theft of a cheap wallet containing nothing but 150 Franks and a Migros Cumulus card if the police office was the other side of town and had impossible opening hours, versus there being a police office across the road that just happened to be open? In the 19 years I've been in Zürich I've seen several small neighbourhood police offics vanish and I' not aware of one new one that opened.

The thread is about crime in Geneva. Many aggressive Africans speaking fluent French. Not a Zurich problem.
Both Africans and people who speak French are considered a problem in Zürich (by some).

Re: Crime near Geneva train station

All the Swiss I have talked to have all said that crime in Switzerland has gone up in the last few years. Generally the level of immigration is mentioned; followed quickly by "but not you, you're the good type of immigrant"

I find it very interesting to read that the crime hasn't really gone up as per Treverus post and shall tell them next time

But they seem to have a lax approach to personal security. They were shocked when I advised that I always lock my doors even if I am at home or running downstairs to put the rubbish out. And they leave their wallets lying around or on top of handbags just waiting to be stolen. My husband recently had to advise his Swiss colleague that leaving his wallet on the edge of the table in an American food court whilst he went to the bathroom was a bad idea...

Well these statistics are from year 2009,

http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/d...einzelnen.html

We eagerly await the statistics for 2010 which will probably arrive in plenty of time for the SVP to gather extra support at the general elections in October http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_f...election,_2011

.

I heard that crime around Zch-HB is clearly less than in Geneva-Cornavin
Geneva, being French speaking, probably has more Canadians.

Geneva is were the magic happens, theft is sort of magic in a way....things just disappear before you know it....ain't it!!

On a serious note, after 5 years living in Geneva, i can definitely sense the difference in lack of security and increase of crime to a pretty high extent comparing to the actual security forces.

Geneva have major problem as they have approx. 1400 police personal recruited and only 300 of them are on patrol as others refuse to leave the admin work and go out of the street due to irregular hours and risks.

I think the solution is the Swiss government have to start thinking about police recruitment requirements as Swiss doesn't seem to fancy working in police forces, they should open it for foreigners too to cover the shortage.
Forget it. The Federal government has nothing to do with police recruitment requirements, as Police in Switzerland is a matter of the Cantons. And Zurich for instance has enough policemen on patrol. Both Zurich and Basel at times send out units of their policemen to other Cantons and even to neighbouring areas in Germany and Austria. Very important even on the federal level are the meetings of Cantonal Police + Army Ministers and of Cantonal Police Chiefs, who routinely give "advice" and recommendations to the Federal Minister of Justice.

What you describe is NOT a problem for the Federal government but for the government (possibly also the parliament) of the Republic and Canton of Geneva.

Looks like they are going to do something about it:

"Canton Geneva’s police director Isabel Rochat says the western Swiss city has
much to learn from the Big Apple in how to tackle crime."

Geneva police learn / become like NYPD .......Not in a million years, they're way too spoiled to be even close, no offense but it takes a real man to be like NYPD from what i've seen and it's not 9 to 5 job as in GVA

The Zurich City Police Chief Philipp Hotzenköcherle, a while ago told his Geneva colleagues to look at NY as he had copied the NY recipes. Also the Genevans could see that he is not exactly popular and that some of his statements are rough and that some of the actions done by his men under his command are over the top, he generally is exceedingly successful.

Good question. I the past, police experts from Zurich and Basel tried to give good advice to the GVA police force, to no avail. But possibly they were perceived as chaps from rival intra-CH cities so that there may be a chance for NY

In today's day and age if you get your wallet stolen then you probably deserved it for being a clumsy dizzy head
I see people so casual with their wallets that I find it shocking. In IKEA they make announcements to keep your belongings close by but still I see ladies leaving their purse few meters away from them in their shopping trolley. Same with ladies on the bus, they have huge open bags with wallet sitting nicely on the top.

I have told these stranger ladies to be careful about their wallet and each time they gave me a dirty look as if I was the flipping thief I don't tell anyone anything any more and which is why I say if you get pick pocketed then good luck to the pick pocketer. It's an art but people here make it way too easy. No art required to be a pick pocketer in Switzerland.

Also being pretty paranoid about stuff in my pockets and bags being stolen, I've long resigned myself to the fact that you're not going to get through to people who aren't. There's a caution gene missing. There are always exceptions, but most sad stories from my friends have been along the lines of their wallet being miraculously teleported from a half-opened side backpack pocket in crowded tram. Oh, and was the backpack out of view on your back and not at your feet? And did you have your Ipod on at full blast? Of course you did.

In any railway station anywhere in the world you get an above averageaamount of petty theft and prostitution. Geneve is no exception.

There is CCTV in Genevba but please, have you noted the amount of building/reconstruction work trhat the station is currently undergoing ?

Effective CCTV would be very expensive to make work properly, each time re-locating cameras, re-wiring during a major construction programe, and all this for what amounts to your carlesness as there are signs warning you about pickpockets in Geenva, i know as they were pointed out to me when i was pick pocketed !

I didn't know there were so many ways to spell ''Geneva''

I don't know about statistics but just a look at some of the characters who hang around Cornavin (with no intention of travelling anywhere) makes me want to pass through there as quickly as possible
