Our local cinema usually shows films in VO. Personally I hate dubbed films and find sub-titles really distracting, partly because I am a linguist by 'trade'. But on the other hand, have to agree that there is no real reason why films should be shown in English in 'normal' cinemas here. Try and find out about ciné-clubs in your area, which are much more likely to show in VO, although they can't afford new films. However- they will show NON English films in VO too- be it Russian or Chinese.
Let's be realistic. You say you are "linguist by trade". But most cinema owners are "businessmen by trade". Which means that they decide in favour of the approach which brings profits. They are neither linguists nor idealists !

In principle not a bad idea, but have you seen the ticket prices here? At CHF14-19 a whack that is some expensive frustration. If language lessons are your goal you'd be better off staying home and watching Swiss TV... equally incomprehensible/educational and it's free.
I don't have to worry about this sort of thing, but is buying or renting DVDs just as expensive in CH?

Looks acceptable. But here in business, when checking up first Swiss suppliers, and then counterchecking with possible US or/and UK suppliers often decide in favour of the US/UK suppliers and get the stuff routed via Miami/FL or Reigate/Surrey/UK and the subsequent consolidation freight to Zurich. In extreme cases we get German stuff sent to Reigate and then consolidated by truck to us ! This may sound absurd but in cases is the best way forward to go !

Re: Cinema Insolence

Leaving aside the question of subtitles or dubbing, watching a movie at home is a very attractive proposition. My brother-in-law bought a 140 cm flatscreen TV before Christmas, and I can see why Hollywood is scared. Even without using a blu-ray, the images from ordinary DVDs are so sharp its almost as if I'm in a cinema. So if it's too much of a pain in the neck finding a non-dubbed movie (not necessarily English) at the Swiss miniplex, staying at home might be the best option.

Burlesque is in English so I am pleading that if anyone is doing a search and sees a day and time when Burlesque is screened in English, please do let me know.
..
OT. There is the live option at the Plaza on January 17th http://www.plaza-zurich.ch/programm/...ranstaltungen/

The MC speaks in English. Get there early to get a table in the front and buy the tickets online as the last series of shows sold out.

Lately, I got very confused because even though when searching on cineman.ch and clicking on English button to obtain the films screened in English, it shows most films screened in German.

So I decided to go to the nearest cinema hall, Arenafilmcity to find out if this change is actually being effectuated.

On arriving the counter and asking the girl if ever some movies would be screened in English, she replied

No, never in English, you guys would have to watch in German like the others?

You guys? The others? wait a minute...I told her there and then that I found her attitude very impudent...She went on saying that I am wasting my time because in other halls it will be the same...

Have u guys realised lately that movies are hardly screened in English or if they are, they are done at the last hrs of the night

Burlesque is in German....damn it...where is the fun?
Hi
Try www.cinemazone.com they cover cinema listings in Switzerland, Germany, UK and Spain. They also cover 4 languages, English, German, Spanish and French.

Normally their data is pretty accurate but of course it can't not help to double check as like you said even cineman have incorrect data from time to time.

Hope that helps

I wonder if the OP ever got to see Burlesque... Sounded pretty keen.

IMO dubbing is horrible, whatever the language from or to. I'd much rather see any film in original language, preferably with subtitles, but certainly not with comical mis-synched mouths.
