Impossible to find jeans!

I did do a search of various combinations of words, but (very surprinsingly) found nothing of this sort of thread.

So, I'm not the smallest of people, but my BMI is within the healthy range. It's ludicrous that I'm a "medium" in the UK, but it's equally ludicrous that I'm considered at least "XL" here (although this is better than Spain, where I'm XXL or even XXXL). I understand it in Spain, they're all so so tiny, but here? A) People are much taller and b) I see a lot more large women (I mean that as a euphamism) than in Spain (although obviously a hell of a lot less than the UK). However, I find it really difficult to find jeans that fit me at all. Sizes in normal shops rarely go up to my size (42 or 44 if I want a really loose pair, which sometimes I do for fat days), and when they do they're marked XL. Am I going insane, or do I just have a really skewed perspective of how big I should be? I mean, I think I could definitely stand to lose a bit, but I really don't think I'm XL, and it's really demoralising to go to a shop and be told you're a massive fatty. I'm sure people have noticed this before, but it's become really apparent to me recently, as I've been mostly window shopping due to lack of funds, but am really, really after a new pair of jeans, as all my other pairs are a bit knackered. I don't really want to go back out to the shops now

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

It's all relative. Sizes are based on the the average body in a particular country, don't get too stressed about it. If it really bothers you, just buy a jeans on your next trip to the UK.

Or go for shopping to Amsterdam, I'm one size smaller there than in other countries!

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

Really? I never pictured Holland as being a "fat" country.

To be honest, feeling like a blob was only part of the rant. The other part was frustration at the fact that I just can't find jeans to fit me. Does anyone have any suggestions of high street shops that would carry my size?

I've found the odd pair of size 42s in H&M etc, but to be honest, I tend to be a little between sizes and prefer to go for the bigger size so I don't get a muffin top!

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

i have a problem with finding jeans as well although for the opposite reason. What i did (which is a bit over the top to be honest), is to go for a day of shopping in London. I came back with 4 perfect pairs of jeans

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

Dutchies are not fat but tall, that's why they need bigger sizes. But the one size smaller is only true for dutch brands, not international ones like H&M for example.

Have you tried esprit? I like their jeans because you find for all sizes different lenghts (at least when I bought my last jeans there).

My favourite jeans brand is Il dolce but I haven't found it in CH yet.

Fly Basel to Edinburgh, book in advance to get cheap tickets and go shopping at George in Asda Will probably cost as much as buying one pair here

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

I bought a pair of jeans (maternity) in the US. I took medium thinking that they will fit me well and they did in the store. But after I brang them home, I realised that they are too big, I keep losing them!

I love to buy clothes in the US, I feel so thin there!

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

I may have a look in Esprit (although due to the aforementioned lack of funds I was hoping to go a little cheaper), but maybe they'll have something in the sales. Either that or I could lose some weight... but that could take a while

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

Have a look at the Vogele shop in Neuchatel. I know sizes in CH just do not compare to UK - so am not sure if you would feel able to go upstairs, where they do have larger sizes (only compared to UK). Must say I do all my shopping in UK- got some jeans at the Dash store 2 weeks ago (but I am defo an XL/18/20).

Have you also tried in C&A? They have jeans in sizes 42, 44 and possibly bigger at very reasonable prices and have really good sale outs.

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

After an unfortunate miscarriage in december I still have some pregnancy weight to deal with and I have been shopping for some comfy jeans as well. Today I've left C&A in tears because I could not find one that was comfy enough and not skinny type jeans. Seriously, where do they find these people who fits these sizes???

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

I know just what you mean. I've honestly seen more size 26s than size 44s... now you tell me what's a more normal size for an adult woman.

EDIT: I'd just like to clarify that I think the UK has gone too far the other way. I was sat watching music videos with my best mate back at Christmas, and every time a woman came on screen, she would say "God, she's soooooo skinny, it looks so wrong!" when actually quite a lot of them looked healthy to me. I just think we're so used to chunky women that chubby is becoming the norm. I'm chubby, and I feel like I'm not as healthy as I should be. Sorry for the ramble, I just can't stand it when women think that it's healthy to be overweight (just like I hate the cultures which praise women for being underweight).

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

I'd also suggest to try Vogele, also C&A, Takko, and check the smaller end sizes within the "Big is Beautiful" selection at H&M.

Actually, I'd say to check each - the 44 - 48 in the "normal size" areas as well as the 44 - 48 in the "grosse grossen" (or w/e) areas.

Typically "misses" or "junior" sizes tend to be cut a bit more straight - less difference between hip / bust and natural waist as well as differences in the "rise" (the measurement between the crotch seam and the waist band). The larger end of the scale in this department usually is simply a larger size of the same cut they'd use on someone who is size 6 (aka 36 here).

Meanwhile, at least at H&M but possibly the others as well, they will be cut a bit more generously in the hips, butt and thigh areas (like "women's sizes" in the US).

Depending on your shape, you may feel more comfortable with the larger "misses" or "junior" type cuts or you may feel more comfortable with the "plus" cuts... Most often, when it comes to comfortable jeans, it is as much or more a matter of cut as opposed to size.

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

I have problems buying jeans here (well anywhere outside Asia really!!) because of my height (most of them need to be altered) hence, its a great day when I find a perfect fit. Do try United Colours of Benetton - the reason I suggested that is because I find that their jeans sizing are just all over the shop (sorry, not trying to be witty, but brain dead and cant think of a better expression)

I bought a pair of jeans the other day that is waist size 26 and needed no alteration, and as much as I would like to think so, my waist is definitely not. I am usually a 38/40 in H&M - and I saw the same jeans running up to size 30 (which is possibly for like Size 44/46), which is why I said their jeans sizings are pretty funny at times.

I've also managed to snag a couple of pairs of jeans from Esprit here. Otherwise, I wait till I get to the UK where Topshop, NEXT and Miss Selfridges all carry a petite range.

On a related note for those of you who are interested: a trick, I use for fat days is to cheat with those jeans leggings that you get from H&M. Feels and look exactly like skinny jeans but no humiliation of trying to squeeze and buttoning them hee hee

Good luck!

Got to a specialised jeans shop. In Zurich, this would be http://www.struuss.ch and http://www.jeans-co.ch/ (also to be found in other swiss towns)

Re: Impossible to find jeans!

Well, being an ex-size-42/44 the places to go are Migros, C&A, Coop also - we have a Pfauen here in Basel which is not bad, some H&M stores - here it depends on the shop - it seems that the ones that stock maternity seem to have bigger sizes in their regular range also - at least that's what I've found. They do also have a "big & beautiful" range - which starts at size 42 - I know you probably don't want to buy stuff from there, but the thing is, clothes that fit you properly are always always more flattering - and make you look thinner - than the ones you try to squeeze into because you want to be that size. I wouldn't go to Esprit - very rare to get a 44 there - although to be honest in the sales you're much more likely to find things.

I still have a huge problem with jeans - I'm your classic pear so I have a large bum but comparatively small waist so to get them over my bum I need a size bigger and then they don't fit on the waist.

I was a size 42/44 for about 6 years (basically since my first child was born) and you know - it's not actually that big - really. At that size I could still wear a UK size 14 which is very average. But there are a lot of skinny teens here which is what a lot of the high street stores cater for. I do think this is changing - you see a lot fewer of these these days, so I think eventually we will see it reflected in shops.

In the end I have to say it was really this lack of clothes choices that drove me to diet. Because in the UK I loved to shop and it was always so easy. Whereas here I just lost the will to shop, which was pretty depressing. I'm now (one year later) a size 40 on fat days and "normally" (if I can say that after only one year being that size!) even a 38. So - if you want to lose some it really can be done. Even if you're in the middle BMI - I was never overweight when I was a 44 (post pregnancy I was even a 46, and still actually not BMI "overweight"), a lot of it is down to shape - so if you carry your weight on your bum (like me) then it's a bugger to buy trousers, whereas I have a friend who carries it all on her chest - which to me seems like a godsend - but obviously not if you want to find a shirt that fits you!!

Well, good luck with it - let us know where you eventually find those jeans. And yes, shopping day trip to the UK would also be on my list of recommendations.
