He didn't join the forum yesterday. I'm a little surprised he asked the question as he knows well, the view of the majority here regarding such swissness.
Maybe he's just messin with us.

I agree with Country Mouse, if you don't fit with the demographic that goes to that particular bar (i.e. Eastern European smokers!!), don't go there. The only cause for concern I see in the fact that the owners of the bar aren't enforcing the smoking ban is that it's an indication that they are lax in other areas as well (such as food safety & general hygiene, staff working conditions, etc.). So it's probably not a good place to be going to anyway.
Er, I dont think CountryMouse meant to say it that way. At all.

For being the epitome of the Swiss we have been whinging about on EF since its conception

Wolli, you seriously not expecting every bar to be keeping with the smoking regulations are you? There are smaller bars who depend on their regulars to keep afloat and sometimes, they need to be a little lax about the rules. The last thing they need is for a stranger to blow the whistle on them.

He's been on EF long enough to know that you should never disrespect smokers or dogs.

Yeah, sat next to him last week during the food ABC event....he didn't resemble Antonio Banderas for some reason.

I on late Sunday-afternoon by chance got into a café/bar I know. Nice people there always, supposedly Serbian or Macedonian. I never bothered about their nationality and never will. What however surprised me was that the whole place smelled of smoking, making it clear that people had been heavily smoking during Sunday afternoon ! As I in spite of their negative habits regard folks there as nice, I did abstain from reporting to the police.

Should I however send some kind of anonymous hint to the police ?
Various comments I have seen from Police spokesmen give th eimpression that enforcing the no-smoking rules is pretty low on their priority list.
I understand some forces requested extra headcount for enforcing the no-smoking rules & when the answer was "no" adopted the Nelson Blind eye approach.

I think the traditional response in this part of the world is a tersely-worded post-it note where everyone will see it.

I don't like smoke in bars and restaurants, but reporting it to the police is a bit out of proportion imo. If I'm bothered by smokers in a pub I'd go and ask them to go outside.

Should we as non-tokers advise the police ?

I on many sunny evenings last summer by chance walked beside the lake near Bellevue in Züri. Nice people there always, supposedly a cosmopolitan mix. I never bothered about their nationality and never will. What however surprised me was that the whole place smelled of "herbal tobacco", making it clear that people had been quietly toking during the afternoon ! As I in spite of their quiet habits regard folks there as nice, I did abstain from reporting to the police.

Should I however send some kind of anonymous hint to the police who also walk there every sunny evening?

Re: Should we as non-smokers advise the police ?

Wolli:

- Do you report every single car you see driving too fast?
- every driver that uses his mobile phone?
- every cyclist that ignores the traffic rules in Zurich?
- every car you see with an expired parking ticket?
- every dog owner that does not have a dog on the leash on the bus/train?

No, they should not smoke and in fact broke a law. Can you really report each and every time somebody does something wrong?

Of course is it important to help the police in any case that is over a certain limit and each of us might have a different understanding on how bad it has to be till you call the cops. Looks like few of us would call them for smokers in a pub.

Why not ! But what about during the day ? And what about some decent fresh air being allowed in ?
Live & let live. Go to a different place & let them get on with it. Do you want people looking over your shoulder and "snitching" on you? They will eventually have to change their ways. But until then patronize other locales.

Go to a different bar/cafe. You are not obliged to go there. Anyway, maybe the smell is left over from before. Smoke smell gets into all corners of the furnishings and is very difficult to get out.

Re: Should we as non-smokers advise the police ?

Just find another bar, you shouldn't have to but unfortunately that is all you can do.

I was in a bar/restaurant last week in Affoltern am Albis (no names but it just has 2 letters in the name) for a meal/drink. When having the drink and before looking at the food menu I could smell smoke from the fumior - because they had wedged the door open. So we drank up and went to a different restaurant.

They lost money, I didn't stink of smoke. No doubt the smokers are happy to go there...

You think 5-6 theft incidents per hour around a train station per hour is "not too bad really", but when it comes to some who just may have been smoking in a bar before you arrived, you wonder whether this is something the police should be investigating.

Where I come from in the UK we used to have 'lock-ins' where alchohol was served outside of hours to a set of known locals. It was completely illegal. Were the police aware? Yes, actually one who regularly participated was the local policeman! Was this an issue - No. Why becuase it did no-one any harm, and everyone was happy.

Same in this case. they are doing no harm. If it is their 'local' let them be, let them live and enjoy their life. They probably didn't even have a vote on the issue anyway. Calling the Police won't really help anyone, will pi** them off, is betraying your 'friends' and they will be angry. There's plenty of other places you can go.
