Dare I suggest it's a case of cross-cultural miscommunication? I imagine the OP is British and this sort of humour is not always easily communicated!

Maybe British by nationality, somewhere else by birth? I think that kind of humour should be very obvious to anyone from the UK!

| | Re: Damn you, IKEA | Quote: | | | | | Maybe British by nationality, somewhere else by birth? I think that kind of humour should be very obvious to anyone from the UK! | | | | | Ok, I'll say it: I am married to a person which is literally from the other side of the globe - and met many people from all over the planet. We recognized that much of the comedy on TV in both countries is more than comparable and sometimes exactly the same. Only English people are convinced that they have an absolutely unique sense of humour nobody else could possibly understand.
It is true that the entertainment industry might vary, but I have seen extremly good satires all over the world. That Asians do not get irony is just a stereotype - I know many great examples of it (for example an e mail that calculates in detail that a Chinese farmer would have worked non-stop since the year 907 in order to be able to buy an apartment in Beijing today... or how many customers a prostitute would need to serve in order to do so.).
I am not saying that there are no cultural differences and many jokes are lost based on the background of the reader. But this thread is not a unsolvable riddle for somebody who is not English.
In short: If he doesn't get it, it is really just him.

From what I over the years have seen in Britain and France, I can easily imagine somebody from certain ethnic minorities being born in the U.K.(France), growing up in Britain (France), working in Britain (France) but culturally remaining among his own ethnic group. And all this in spite of going through the British (French) education system, becoming in case of need a customer of the NHS, etc.

Ok, let's say of a different cultural background then.
Treverus, I know loooots of non-Brits (including native English speakers) who really, really don't get British comedy. It's not unusual, I don't get why Kaamelott is funny.

Let's say that from a global perspective, the French are a bit of an anomaly when it comes to humour. They are in other things as well...
The point is that a lot of commedy requires to have culture specific knowledge. If you make a parody on x-factor, it will only be funny if you actually know what x-factor is. So yes, a lot of British stand-up stuff is not funny for outsiders as we are missing the background to actually understand the joke. And there is an awful lot of sub-standard commedy on the private channels I simply do not find funny - but that's the same in other countries.
But this thread is a parody on the thousands of complains how expensive Switzerland is. We all have the background to understand it and I am pretty sure that everyone has been to an IKEA before. (They have them from the US to China these days...)

But as far as I get it, Indian humour is different, in spite of the close connections between India and Britain. I always found British humour nice, but when I tried to use British humour in Texas had a rather hard landing, as those folks in the Deep South of the USA have zero understanding for British humour and zero understanding for the play with words so popular in England

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that they still enforce the death penalty for outbursts of humor in Texas? Especially any "bush" word plays.

Well, back to topic.
remember folks you'll have until this Friday to enjoy the 50% discount at Adelboden upon showing your IKEA family card. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until 14.03.2011.

how about this... I am Indian too; the Eastern variety... born and brought up in India... even then I "actually chuckled" at the OP's humour in the first post... the last thing I was expecting on this normal a thread was a discussion full of generalizations...
