Tom | | | | | Few Swiss have a desire to be European. The geographical spot on the continent is about as much as we can handle. Although it has crossed my mind, moving the entire population somewhere else would be a solution. The trouble is, all these complainers will follow us as soon as we settled in - as no doubt they will fu** up this place in no time. | This user would like to thank curley for this useful post: | | This user groans at curley for this post: | |

You said in another post that you didn't care.
Perhaps some of us are trying to make this a better place for our kids.
My children are Swiss and have as much right to be here as you.
Do you have children or do you only act in your own selfish interests the whole time?
Are you always this bitter or is just when people disagree with you?

Tom | | | | | Smoking uptake by youngsters is actually increasing in Switzerland - and going down elsewhere.
It goes down when it is seen less as a right-of-passage.
Less people smoking means less kids taking it up.
The stance I have is one taken by government around the world (the stance adopted after being advised by health experts is no different to my own).
Switzerland is probably the only country in the world where smoking policy is decided by the addicts themselves through direct democracy.
I can't even vote so how Curley thinks I am (in her words) 'f** up her country' I can't quite fathom.
It's only words on a forum. If she doesn't like the views of the dirty foreigners then I am at a loss to understand why she spends so much time on this forum. More time than anyone else.

Surely she can find some rabidly xenophobic Swiss-German forum to vent on instead (although she may actually discover that her fellow countrymen don't have as much bitter bile as her).

In my experience, Swiss smokers (plus Austrians) seem to be almost unique in the western world in their apparent inability to accept that smoking actually harms them and has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt to do so.

Almost everyone over 20 knows that smoking harms them. 80 % of the smokers I know tried to quit at least one time.
I feel its more a attitude of: Meh I have to die because of something anyway so why should I stop doing something I like or are at least am used to.

Then they seem to stop fairly easily.
Unfortunately the damage is already done and they spend the rest of their lives with emphysema and other smoking related illnesses.

Yes but it was their decision, they knew about the risks and possible consequences.
I feel very little sympathy in those cases.
I feel very sorry for children with parents who smoke in their homes though.

| | Re: Smoking on the train platforms.uughh | Quote: | | | | | Yes but it was their decision, they knew about the risks and possible consequences. | | | | | It doesn't work like that. People usually start smoking at a fairly young age - that age when nothing seems risky and death seems a long way off.
By the time they are hooked, it's too late and, as you said, they try to give up but quite often fail.
As I wrote before, the number of youngsters smoking in Switzerland is going up.
De-normalising smoking seems to work for this age group in other countries. Shock tactics don't work on young people.
One way of de-normalising smoking is removing it from everyday view -from parks, public buildings, restaurants (inside and out) and from public transport hubs such as train stations and railway platforms.
(Can you see that I didn't mention passive smoking once)_.
