WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

I'd like to send out a word of warning to those in the Zug area regarding VERY skilled pickpockets who are operating in the vicinity. It was my birthday yesterday and I visited Zug for the first time with a friend. I had stupidly withdrawn a large amount of cash (to pay a bill) and had it in my wallet in my shoulder bag. I never left the bag unattended and for most of the day was carrying it across my body including on the train. The bizarre bit is that instead of taking the whole wallet they just took the cash out and put the wallet back - I kid you not!! I am totally bemused as to how this happened and totally gutted at the loss. A very harsh lesson learnt. I'm obviously not getting any wiser with age

Re: WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

There's no chance you dropped it? Seems odd that'd they'd put the wallet back rather than just throw it away. However, if I was ever to be mugged or pick pocketed I'd much appreciate it if they only took the cash!

Not really that odd - it happened to me once in St. Gallen. I left my wallet in my backpack in a crowded Starbucks, and they found the wallet, emptied it of cash, and put it back in bag in the same spot.

No, there's no way I dropped it. I didn't take the wallet out of my bag until I got home and realised what had happened. Hard to feel appreciative when you've lost a large amount of cash but yes, I guess I know what you mean - at least I don't have to cancel cards etc...

Re: WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

Sorry to hear about that, however I must add it's not only a Zug problem, but pretty much any city in Switzerland - especially touristy, crowded areas.

I've been lucky. In Zürich I've experienced this twice since I've been here, but both attempts were unsuccessful simply because I happened to notice it both times and took action to prevent it.

I think "not unattended" these days means it's directly in you line of sight at all times. Sad but nevertheless true.

Re: WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

I'm very perplexed reading the stories about famous tax heaven called Zug. They mug the people at the train stations, have skillful pickpockets, other friends complained about house breaking and etc. And y-day one of the EF members was so scared beacuse of the above attacks that couldn't sleep at night and I had to send few warm words via the PM. Awful!

The world as we know it is coming to an end

Man why don't they try it on me? I even tempt them by having my wallet stick out from my back pocket. Could it be because of the way I dress and look?

Are you sure that you didn't just forget to take the money from the cash machine? I've done that twice now and hubby once. That also seems to occur more with age too

Re: WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

Unfortunately the police are busy dealing with more 'important' matters such as reports of people smoking in bars, travelling at 55Kmh in a 50Kmh zone, not having the right Vignette one day after they should change, arresting journalists etc etc, so we have to live with things like beatings, muggings, pickpocketing etc. not getting prioritised.

Re: WARNING-beware of very skilled pickpockets in Zug!

This is a warning to all - not only because of the actual act of pickpocketing, but there is always a chance that these people hover near to cash-points and target those who have been seen to make a withdrawal.

Also bear in mind that they often work together and not individually, so the next time a stranger asks something innocent of you, bear in mind that there may at least one one or two other accomplices sniffing around, or "accidentally" bumping into you.

And ladies, never leave your bag hooked onto the back of your chair at a café or restaurant, or worse still in the front shelf of a shopping trolley.

It's a sad indictment, but I suspect anyone I don't know as being up to no-good, until proven otherwise (meant in context of being approached in the street, etc.)

Hi Kathryn,

Check your bank balance, perhaps you forgot to take the money out of the cash machine?
This has happened to me before, if you do not take the money within a certain time frame, the money just gets sucked back into the machine and the bank credits your account again.
I left 400CHF sticking out of a bank machine on a Friday at 7pm at the UBS in the Zürich Hauptbahnhof, it was credited back to my account.

Ja ... strange things do happen!
I was once behind a lady in a queu of people at an ATM .... she hovered for ages waiting for her money.
It never came out.
So I offered to guard the machine while she went into the bank to find out what the problem was .......... of course the money spat out while I stood there .. a whole bunch of lovely banknotes!
I stood there guarding it like a hungry Rottweiler, till she returned with the bank people.
Made me feel like a truly virtuous Mr Bean.

But, besides my stupid contribution to this thread ... What a truly awful feeling it must be ... to find ALL ones money gone!

Threads like this one are most useful ... to make us all catch a big wake-up in this land of "very little real crime", that is changing its face daily, it seems!

another vote for leaving the money in the machine. Why double the risk by putting back your wallet in your bag? Just take it, pass it on to your accomplaice and the job's done.

here's hoping you had a moment at the ATM, anyway.

Be careful in Geneva too, as we are on the border with France, it's a good spot for pickpockets.

They got me once, hopefully they just got my sun glasses protection
