Of course, I never check behind me to see who is there, I just check after I've opened the door and do it for anyone. You ladies can send thanks and checks to my parents if you wish. | | | | | Ok, thanks, phdoofus's parents!
It's funny though, in my culture, lady first at all times, ie holding the door for her, etc. BUT into the bars, it's always men first, to check out the area for safety first in case there is a fight... | The following 3 users would like to thank MusicChick for this useful post:

| | Re: Where are the REAL MEN?
As I mentioned before the whole issue of the guy not helping was just the beginning of a train of thought . I don't want to stir the cr@p, but I do think it's a gender issue. Political correctness is creeping into how we raise our kids. It is somehow wrong to teach our boys that it's ok to be boys, to play cops and robbers and instead we stick a Barbie in their hands because 'we need to be peaceful". Gender equality does not mean that we are the same. We are and we should be equal in our rights but we are not the same. Men and women are different for a reason. We have different roles in society. When we sissify our boys try to make them same as women nothing good comes of it. Now let the groaning begin.

| | Re: Where are the REAL MEN? | Quote: | | | | | I do realize there are idiots in both genders but this incident only started my train of thought. I do blame women, mothers for bringing up boys with no sense of who they are. In today's society people are so afraid to raise boys to be boys, that there is no way they have a chance to grow up to be Men. When schools suspend little boys for making paper guns and teach them that there are no difference between man and women and force them to adapt to a more feminine world, that's what I don't get. | | | | | Reminds me of the time when I held the door for a lady who said, "You needn't hold the door for me because I'm a woman."
I remembered reading that someone once retorted, "I'm not. I'm holding it for you because I'm a gentleman.", but I didn't think it was right to plagarize, so I told her could kiss my azz in Macy's window during the St Patrick's day parade instead. | The following 2 users would like to thank Brass427 for this useful post:

I find valid point in the OP's thread. There is serious difference in perception of offering a helpful hand in Switzerland and some other places in the world. I find it quite amazing that people can just ignore e.g. elderly person on public transport whom wouldn't offer the seat or someone who stumbled and would lay flat on the ground. I have also seen that people reject the help offered from somebody else simply viewing it as a shame and pride wouldnt allow them to accept it. Often I hear elderly person saying: "das ist gut" and immediately turning away as a sign of intimidation. Does it have something to do with some kind of culture where people do not accept failure on personal level? I have numerous examples to back it up.
I come from upbringing that whenever we see something awkward happen to our brethren we just stop and least we can do is to ask if they are alright.
It could be that in the OP's case, the passerby just took it as normally acceptable behaviour not to bother her because she can handle herself without unwelcome intervention. It could be that the matter of chivalry never crossed this person's mind in this particular situation. Just speculating...

One guy behaved abominably, total *****
and now all the Swiss men are to blame (+Swiss mothers, etc, etc). Who says he was Swiss anyway. Again, Switzerland as a whole is judged by the behaviour of one person. I've met many awful people in the UK and in most countries I've been to - I wouldn't dream of judging the whole of UK because some idiot was rude to me on the bus, or bumped into me in the street. It happens anywhere - and yet, both here, there or anywhere, the majority of people I've come across have been friendly and helpful.
The concepts that real men are the only ones who still play with guns, or that being a helpful human being is a male trait, are beyond belief.

It could be in some specific cultures matter of discipline and upbringing e.g. Germanic not exclusive to Switzerland. Even further generalizing it could be anyone with high eagles.
My grandfather with military upbringing was this sort of the person. He would rather kick your ass first before let you help him with a cane.

What---there are people out there who got taught about porn from their parents???
maybe it's true about the yanks, apparently the Canadians don't have to brag about porn, it's just assumed inclusive. http://28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lg...vwlqo1_500.jpg | This user would like to thank Chemmie for this useful post:

| | | | | THAT'S IT! You found the hidden meaning of that topic!
It's just another topic to justify the use of guns prior to the 13th Feb vote!
If she OP had a gun she would have shot the inglorious non-chevalry man who walked away.
From the floor, static safe position, clean shot, etc...
(Although she might have problems with local authorities later on, unless he was in possession of a sandwitch and planned to use it in public transport ).
That forum is really fun!

You must understand we are all expats (most of us) who do not go out a lot hence we judge the situation in the streets based on mere incidents reported on the EF: number of other (expats) beaten up, single smokers on platform, broken toes count, outcome of anti gun laws and this new legislation banning food on trains. Now this incident with unchivalry brat... We have had it
