If valentines day is alien to the Swiss, how come all the excellent chocolate shops have big hearts in the windows ?
It's no longer alien to the Swiss, it just doesn't have the long tradition that it does in the USA or the UK, and obviously the shops aren't going to miss out on the opportunity to make money

both the restaurants in question said "oh valentines day" before shuffling through their diary and saying they are closed
Hmmm... I don't really get you're statement...

Maybe because the OP is not in Appenzell, but Zurich. The city has 30% foreigners and while I personally think that the entire Valentine's day thing is far too commercial - just like Halloween has it become quite normal in the past years over here as well. Otherwise I could not explain while other Swiss restaurants in Zurich offer special Valentines day menus on Monday.
If you share the names of these restaurants here you could make the OP happy!

Sure. Walking past it yesterday, the "Rampe Süd" restaurant which is part of the "four points" at Sihlcity had a large display on their special Valentine's day menu outside. I remember it was 99CHFs per person and had some lovely sounding sea food on it, but they do not have it on their website...

Generally it has to do with whether the place was open over the weekend or not. If it was, then it'll be closed on Monday to give the employees a full day off. Hairdressers and barbers work on the same rules.

Well, it's certainly no big deal down here, haven't noticed anything promoting it.

There is no tradition of Valentine's day in this part of Europe. Why should they change opening hours if they're not expecting a massive amount of customers?
Valentine's day is getting big, it seems, in our area, and fast. If shops push it on people, some restos accept, it will take a while but others will adapt. Things just take longer here, services haven't been the most accomodating field here, customers wise.

what i found strange was that Migros in Puls 5 has a Valentines day proiscutto pack. Apart from a couple of obligatory heart shaped chocolate boxes why are cured meats considered specifically romantic fare?

and In answer to the OP's question, like others have already said, Zurich seems to have several Valentines' menus for various restaurants online.. i guess it just comes down to a percieved demand.

If I understand well, you can't get away with just spend money on the day but you actually have to DO something for it?

If things continue like this, Valentine's day could even be romantical

Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb

When I was a kid growing up in CH in the 50s - Valentine's Day was totally unknown. I got my first Valentine's card from my first English boyfriend.. when I was about 13. I didn't know what it was all about, and remember thinking it was really stupid that it was not signed. LOL. Like Halloween, it's only been introduced much later here - of course seen like a wonderful opportunity to rip people off with another tradition (father's day, mother's day, etc, etc).

Strange that restau owners have not caught on like other businesses have!?
Especially when Tourism is low due to the strength of the ChF.

Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb

The weird thing is that all of my calendars list Saint days, and the 14th ISN'T S. Valentino!

Ahh, this is why "It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI"

Bummer.

was trying to get a reservation, as you do, and astonished to be told by two very excellent restaurants that they will be closed on 14th Feb. Are they MAD???!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

the opening hours in this country are crazy, but restaurants not bothering to open on 14th Feb is beyond me

are they mad ? not really but I think they have open on Sunday, and so give their personnel the Monday off as recompensation.

and what is so special about 14th February ?

Yes, this indeed in many places outside the centre IS a problem, with so many restaurants having closed on Sundays, and even more so at noon on Saturday and Sunday

cafés and restaurants open for lunch at 11.30 and have open for lunch until 2pm or 3pm ....... 14.30 to 18.00 to me is not exactly "lunchtime"
