Why should they change opening hours if they're not expecting a massive amount of customers? | | | | | Oh, thanks ! I was not even aware of that "Valentine's day", which is of very low importance here, if any |

Got our local rag through the letter-box tonight- it seems all the restaurants around here are 'cashing' in with special fancy Menus for Monday.

both the restaurants in question said "oh valentines day" before shuffling through their diary and saying they are closed | | | | | by saying "said" you certainly mean some persons ? Yes, they may have heard about "Valentine's Day" and did not want to be impolite, but Valentine's Day is not something relevant in Switzerland, so sorry

| | Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb | Quote: | | | | | Maybe because the OP is not in Appenzell, but Zurich. The city has 30% foreigners and while I personally think that the entire Valentine's day thing is far too commercial - just like Halloween has it become quite normal in the past years over here as well. Otherwise I could not explain while other Swiss restaurants in Zurich offer special Valentines day menus on Monday. | | | | | You contradict yourself above ! Why ? Because you mention the 30% of foreigners of whom quite many but not the majority love Valentin's Day. This means that for restaurants with a clientele of Anglophones and of Swiss business-wise or personally related to this side of the culture the day is commercially interesting, but for others it is completely irrelevant.
You however are completely wrong in your criticism about the Valentine's Day thing to be "far too commercial" as it was exactly the commerce, particularily the florists, who tried and try to bring the habit to Switzerland. Overall with rather modest success.
The comparison to Halloween is wrong as well. Halloween in Zurich and its suburbs became popular thanks to the local teachers who in their search for a replacement for "Schul-Sylvester" which was dropped by the Zurich-City government embraced Halloween and firmly established Halloween for school-children here. In contrast to the Schulsylvester with its crazy timings out of the middle-ages, Halloween, taking place in late afternoon and early evening is sensibly placed.

| | Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb | Quote: | | | | | Perish the thought that some small business owners would actually love to be allowed to open when their customers want to shop... they typically know their customers better than the cantonal administration does.
And yes, I do believe that nobody is forced to work in services. If you decide to work in a hotel, you work shifts. In all other places in the world is the same true for restaurants - or how many other places do you know where restaurants are closed on the weekend? I know we had this countless of times, but when I was at college, I was happy that I could find jobs that earned me money at the times I was not supposed to be at university... | | | | | Wrong on three counts.
A) you are not forced to work in services. But learn a profession related to "services". Work-shifts are necessary in hotels but not in restaurants or shops.
B) restaurants closed at weekends can be a nuisance. But I have seen such places in Italy, France, Germany, etc
C) If you have a shop in the Canton of Zurich, and you see an interesing date, you HAVE the freedom to keep open, even on Sunday. Exactly our shop, without getting any special permission, had open on days which aviation-related were important here. But again, until I saw this thread I was not even aware of Valentin's Day being these days. You could have told me that Valentin's was in November and I would have believed you.
PS: We will have open on Monday as usual, but in case you come shopping here bring a present for Frank (our CEO) who refused our idea to close on Mondays as we see that there are no customers around on Monday

If you work Tuesday to Sunday, it is a good idea to have Monday off alltogether and an additional day one day per person as Mondays are lame businesswise

This is not London, cash in on all event in a calendar year. I think Valentines day is over cooked anyway.

If shops push it on people, some restos accept, it will take a while but others will adapt. Things just take longer here, services haven't been the most accomodating field here, customers wise. | | | | | I'm blind it seems. I've only noticed one florist putting up Valentine's day decoration.

But are open IN SPITE of the lame business!!! YOU customers do not come. People in this area however are near to the airport, and so have to care for a fairly international clientele.
In downtown, the restaurants ARE open on Mondays, but many restaurants in suburbs are closed either on Sunday or on Monday. For many small restaurants, it is the only way to stay in business, as they otherwise had to hire more personnel.
Add to this that all Coop, Migros, Spar, Aldi, Lidl etc have open Monday to Saturday.

But in Zurich, bars were open until midnight 50 years ago, while them closing doors at 23.00 in London is what I found really really shocking. The whole metropolis being heavily asleep by 01.00 as well, particularily if compared with 24hrs open Paris |
