Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb

If small cafes and supermarkets think it's smart to close for two hours at lunch time, then closing all day on Valentines Day makes perfect sense.

As I've said before, the Swiss business model is to do as little work as possible, and wait for bankruptcy or rely on a monopoly. I wish I coul do the same; must be a lovely relaxing life!

Cooking is the right answer except in Switzerland where the average millionaire can only afford to eat out once per year...

I'm still trying to quite decipher that.. but... if you really don't want to cook AND want to impress a certain someone... try any restaurant attached to a Hotel. ( excepting perhaps the "super 8" )

they will more than likely to be open, feeding the lonely tourists.

Vrschikasana has no particular reputation at present
Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb

I am no longer ever surprised when a store or restaurant isn't open...

No Sundays.
Hardly anything after 7pm or before 9am.
5 weeks of vacation a year.
25 national holidays.
closing 2 hours a day for lunch.

Not surprised (but still capable of getting pissed off about it )

There is no tradition of Valentine's day in this part of Europe. Why should they change opening hours if they're not expecting a massive amount of customers?

Please stop pretending to be Swiss ;-)

both the restaurants in question said "oh valentines day" before shuffling through their diary and saying they are closed

the significant others of all the staff of those restaurants are probably thrilled that Valentines Day falls on a Monday this year and that for a change they get to spend that day together.

Maybe because the OP is not in Appenzell, but Zurich. The city has 30% foreigners and while I personally think that the entire Valentine's day thing is far too commercial - just like Halloween has it become quite normal in the past years over here as well. Otherwise I could not explain while other Swiss restaurants in Zurich offer special Valentines day menus on Monday.

Yes, perish the thought that small business owners and retail staff should actually have a life outside work!

How can you possibly say that it's ok for some people not to join the buy-flowers-gold-necklace-and-a-300CHF-dinner for your girl rat-race every year for a commercial holiday no less... have you no heart for the shareholders?

Perish the thought that some small business owners would actually love to be allowed to open when their customers want to shop... they typically know their customers better than the cantonal administration does.

And yes, I do believe that nobody is forced to work in services. If you decide to work in a hotel, you work shifts. In all other places in the world is the same true for restaurants - or how many other places do you know where restaurants are closed on the weekend? I know we had this countless of times, but when I was at college, I was happy that I could find jobs that earned me money at the times I was not supposed to be at university...

Re: restaurants closed on Monday ... even 14th feb

(switching on "Wolli-mode"): Valentine's Day is traditionally a Catholic saint's holiday. As with so many other things (eg. Halloween and trick-or-treating) it's sort of spilled over to here and everybody now feels they have to spend oodles of cash buying pressies, flowers, lunches/dinners.

If a restaurant is usually closed on a Monday ("Ruhetag" = day of rest) after having been open on Sunday, they probably don't feel the need to open especially for Valentine's Day. Shops, offices, Post Office, Banks etc. are all open - it's not a public holiday - it's just a normal Monday!

P.S. Next year it'll be on a Tuesday, so everybody who is now shocked that a restaurant is closed on a Monday, will be pleasantly surprised to find it'll probably be open

If valentines day is alien to the Swiss, how come all the excellent chocolate shops have big hearts in the windows ?

Cos they've realized they can make money with it. Why else?

So your complaint essentially is that (some) restaurants are a bit slower on the uptake than (some) chocolatiers.

(And anyway, chocolate shops have got to have something in the windows - it's not the difference between a restaurant opening specially on a Monday or not, it's more like the difference between a restaurant that is open that day laying on a special menu or not.)
