Re: Restaurants like Funerals!!!

Another thread full of Swiss experiences that are totally alien to me as someone who's been here almost 5 yrs.
I honestly wonder if there is not some parallel ex-pat Swiss universe that I haven't (thankfully) stumbled across.
Believe me, I'm not the world's biggest fan of general Swiss culture by any stretch of the imagination, but dare I say it, sometimes it almost seems that some of you deliberately go out looking for examples of stereotypical 'Swiss wierdness' .

It's just the part of living here. I hear Swiss people complain about things in Switzerland too. And when I lived in my home-country, there were plenty of things I complained about there as well.
We all have our good days and our bad days. But in the end of the day, I think the biggest majority of expats in Switzerland see more pluses about it than minuses. If not, why the heck would we live here?

Re: Restaurants like Funerals!!!

Perhaps the Blinde Kuh should extend their concept and make the restaurant friendly for deaf people. food would have to be ordered using sign language.

Cheers,
Nick

Hey do not blame the Latin blood, kiddo. You can not have the flavor and the rhythm without the noise . "Arriba, arriba!"
I imagined you wearing a sombrero and shooting a gun in the air while reading this.

I haven't had any public noise complaints in CH restaurants, but in a public hammam on a crowded Saturday a few months ago an older haughty lady wouldn't stop "shhh"-ing at everyone who was talking. We finally had to tell her that it was a public place and if she didn't like it, she had only to install a hammam in her mansion. The noise was far from excessive, and when you have 10-15 people carry on several conversations at normal volume, that's just what happens.

But the hamam rules generally state that it's meant to be a place of quiet, so I tend to have any conversations at a below normal level.

Raymond Blanc, the French cook based in the UK said that the English are overly concerned with table manners and do not enjoy the food experience. The French are the opposite (no table manners and they celebrate the food experience). I think this comparison applies well to the two sides of Switzerland.
Well, from my perspective, the two sides of Switzerland are north/south, not east/west. (we tend to forget about the French-speaking bit)

Tom

Tom

there's a french speaking bit?

oh yeeeeeah...but arent they just kept on for quota reasons?

switzerland ends at fribourg, further west is "eastern france" as far as i'm concerned.

same divides exist elsewhere too: anything north of Würzburg is "Prussia" to a Bavarian. Anythnig south of the Elbe is Bayern to a Northern German. And as a californian, i can say that anything east of I5 is the midwest.

What is it with people here and the low low noise level? I think they will drive themselves mad having Mariachis playing next to them while eating (LOL!)
When I eat in a restaurant I want to enjoy the food and the company in peace. If I wanted to listen to your conversation I would hire a clown instead. So zip it will ya?

There I was, enjoying a romantic meal with my other half when ... in walked a bloody clown! I think hiring clowns in restaurants should be banned.

Not too surprising as the Ticinesi are closer to the German-speakers than the francophones (maybe not in food culture, but surely in political culture).

They don't call us Welschschweiz ("foreign" Switzerland) for nothing. They should thank us for keeping the country modern and civilized.

I'm proud to be "Welsh" and I'll fight those intruders from Whitehall... err, Bundeshaus.

But in the pitch black how would the waiter/waitress see what you were ordering

Re: Restaurants like Funerals!!!

Interesting thread reading!

A friend and I ended up in a Mexican restaurant in Zurich one night. The noise was INCREDIBLE ..... clashing of plates and cutlery, conversational screaming from all surrounding tables......

We ordered a beer .... and waited and waited for service - not forthcoming ... so we upped and walked out.

On paying for our beers at the reception, the waiter grabbed the notes out of my hand before I could sort them ... then he threw the change onto a nearby table.

The next day ...... I found candle wax all down the back of my coat....and remembered there being lit candles on the table my change was on ...... The b******d had obviously turfed it at me as we walked away! .. (I had not tipped him for his non-service)

Never mind the noise levels in that place ..... I now stick to quiet restaurants when in Zurich ... where, if called for, the throwing of candlewax would be heard....? hahaaaa Actually I rather stick to our own little cow-town restaurants where dancing on the tables is not frowned on.

Re: Restaurants like Funerals!!!

If it's so dark you can't see what you're eating anyway - so what difference does it make.

Customer: Is that my Bratwurst?
Well-endowed waiter: Keep your hands to yourself, cheeky.

Cheers,
Nick

The wait staff are blind. But they are so familiar with the place that its no problem for them. Really hard to explain everything in detail - you got to experience it for yourself. Check it out.
