Why do the Swiss say Humer (who mer) instead of Homer?

Why do the Swiss call poor Homer Simpson "Who mer?"

It's become a pet peeve of mine.

Yeah, why do the Brits say "Pah-riss" instead of "Pah-reee" for the French Capital ??

And why do Americans refer to John Boehner, the current Speaker of the US House of Representatives, as John Bayner? Wait, I think I can guess.

The same reason why my fellow country men can not say "sketchers" but say "skeechers" :D

I say Paris,Holland not Netherlands, and people from the USA I do not call them American, America is a large continent and Canadians are not pleased when you ask if they are from the USA. I am not a Brit but English. By the way what do you actually name someone from the USA.. a Usain???

I love to always point out that "Bayner" can't even pronounce his own name.

I once slipped and referred to him in proper German pronunciation at a table full (or table fool?) of Republican colleagues. It didn't go over well. It's not easy to explain the German phonics to people who can't even speak English properly.

Perhaps because it's Greek name and Swiss are taught to pronounce it this way?

Spell it Ohmer and you're nearly there.

The word "estadounidense" exists in Spanish (los Estados Unidos being the United States), but I don't think there's an equivalent in English... I guess you say something like "U.S. citizen"?

Our cat's name is Earl,

Neither my girlfriend, nor any other Italian speakers I know, can pronounce it even close (I have lots of fun asking people to say 'Earl').

Some things just don't work in other languages.

Tom

'Sir' works just fine for me. :D

Actually, you would be British. Not Welsh, Irish or Scots, but you would all be British. They, on the other hand, would not be English.

My Swiss mother cannot say "oil". It sounds more like "Earl".

Homer is not an odd name for the Swiss. I've just found it interesting that it's been changed into Hoomer.

probably same reason than when Americans are calling poor Hómēros Homer.

If "Humer" makes you nervous, French Homer sounds like "ommayrrr" (Ommčre). So, having a real break down now?

english people are from england. scottish are from scotland. irish people are from ireland. welsh people are from wales. these are all different!
Collectively British yes but inividual. A Scot would never say he was British and anyway we are for the most part all mongrel nations.
