A bit below the belt Treverus, really. 'Class' (whatever that is!) has nothing to do with 'labels' and hugely overpriced bags, honest. Some who 'have it' might say 'how very Nouveau Riche'.
I have no problem to admit that I am "Noveau Riche" sans the riche part... yet.

I am not claiming to have class either, life is far much more fun without it...

My point are
1. that LV is not only selling things with tasteless oversized brand tags.
2. that people who think so have probably not been to a LV boutique, otherwise they would know better.
3. the dear poster claimed to have class but probably knows about the luxury goods we are discussing here only from hearsay...
4. Trashing a Nationality is not really smart. Doing so when coming yourself from a relatively poor country is even less smart.

Was that below the belt? I hope so. The one I am wearing right now is btw from LV.

Thanks for reply - it was just the 'salary to match' bit which I felt was a tad hard.

A watch however is very different- as it takes 100s of hours to make all parts by hand and a lot of skill to put an excellent watch together - very different to a T-shirt or even handbag.
No, a watch isn't different at all. Your appreciation of it is however. Let's not assign arbitrary value to something because it takes a lot of time to make. That's subjective. Perhaps the creator is an idiot, who knows. Fact is, everything beyond a bag of rice, a loving relative, a wooden shack, falls more under "want" than "need" and all of our wants are based on personal taste which falls foul of any global rationalisation. Same with class. There are a lot of people who own car dealerships who'll purchase LV stuff covered with logos to feel classy, then there are lots of people with degrees and who work in IT who'll purchase LV stuff without logos hoping someone will eventually notice or ask so they can feel subtle and they associate this with class, there are further people who will look for unknown brands that are even more expensive to feel even more subtle and even more classy, and others who feel that spending more than 0.00001% of your net worth on anything is incredibly gauche. Some people associate class with aristocracy, and most of them don't buy new anything. It's all very personal, but announcing that having "LV" on the outside of your bag is classless but having the same label on the inside of your bag is classy is putting yourself on quite a pedestal.

For me, spending 80k on a watch or 150k on a car with a net worth below 15 million makes you a total twonk but of course that's just my opinion.

Boy o Boy !I am glad I made the right decision 46 years ago to go to Canada.I would hate to see my wife, buying a CHF 2`000.00 bag and then traveling from Wuelflingen all the way to Muelhausen , just because the Salami is cheaper there

Not least of course as you might have asked yourself whether it really was the salami which attracted your wife to Mülhausen/Mulhouse

Godwyn's law...
Okay, maybe this might finally invoke Godwin's law.

More Fashion-Nazi connections hitting the news with John Galliano's videotaped diatribe professing his love for Hitler.

There is the wierd videotape of Francoise Dior's marriage to British Nazi Colin Jordan. As part of a Nazi wedding ceremony, they mingled their blood on a copy of Mein Kampf.

And this one took me by surprise. Hugo Boss was a Nazi whose company produced the SS uniforms.

I thought Lady Gaga was wierd, but she may just be a genius mirroring the true freaks of high fashion for the general public to see.

this is what Hermès wants you to believe. It's a way for them to increase the attractivity of the product by creating an artificial rarefaction.....Apple is doing same thing as well as the Nano's of the Migros

By my work and position in the industry, I had the chance to see first hand how those bags are made. From the choice of the material, inspection, control, hand work, etc.

Very fascinating work.
You are both right in the sense - a birkin is lovingly created by expert craftsmen and it takes time to do so. Each birkin can be traced back to the creator by the craftsman's serial number.

Having said that, birkins arent as rare as Hermes claims it is. This book is fascinating and gives a great insight:

Now, can you imagine you lose one of those? Bad enough one has to run around and replace all the cards, keys, cell and documents, but lose something so....lush...gives me heebeegeebees. The thought of leaving my bass on a train one day gives me nightmares.

I will never lose it. It will be sewn onto my arm. Anyone who wants it will have to chop off my arm.

Re: My fake Louis Vuitton contraband was seized at Geneva Airport's Customs

Sadly a fairly common occurrence in some parts of the world.
So be careful. Must say that personally, I'd hate to have to worry constantly about precious possessions. Partly a generational/age thing I know.

This thread sparked my interest and I've downloaded the kindle version of Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas

So far I'm only a couple of chapters in but it's proving a very interesting read

Quote:
The luxury industry has changed the way people dress. It has realigned our economic class system. It has changed the way we interact. It has become part of our social fabric. To achieve this, it has sacrificed its integrity, undermined its products, tarnished its history, and hoodwinked its customers. In order to make luxury "accessible," tycoons have stripped away all that has made it special.

Luxury has lost its luster.
I'm already questioning my desire for my next 'shiny thing'

Judging from the "looks" that come from "high fashion", with all those emaciated models, I get a sense that some of those designers and the industry have a sadistic bent against women. How is it that psychotics like Lagerfeld and Galliano have been given rein to steer women's fashion? Why do they pick models that look like Auschwitz survivors? Many of those designers are not even women, and even appear to hate women.

For normal, healthy, voluptious and child-rearing women; high-fashion images must be a let-down.

I think the book will probably have a big positive influence on your budget
Anyways, I always thought investments should be done into something that generates future income or something that does not get old, something that gives a lot, ie knowhow, edu, experiences, etc. You can do that while it makes you happy. Buying things, collecting and consuming just for the sake of having something, I don't know. (I do get why chicks get so crazy for purses, sure).

Well, if you had invested the budget for a laptop in Apple stock in 1997, you'd have by now...

We're moving to Switzerland soon, the only things I can think of, of ours that aren't genuine, is about 10 or so DVDs from China, am I going to get screwed if they find these in our shipping?

I'm not sure it will affect my overall budget I have a pretty small wardrobe (my husbands is bigger than mine). I have a notoriously difficult figure to buy for and my tastes don't run to the norm so I own a few pieces that fit well, are well made (or as well as I can afford) and... wear them until they fall apart.

It used to be a good thing to have breasts and an hourglass figure. Now we're all supposed to starve ourselves to create protruding hips and xylophone rib cages. Clothing used to be created or modified to fit each individual woman highlighted a woman's assets and disguised her less desirable ones.

But. And it's a pretty big but. They didn't get new clothes every week. They didn't have multiple wardrobes and dozens of pairs of shoes. Clothes were kept for years and refashioned, repaired or adjusted over time.

I'm guessing this contributed to the fashionable creation of the human coat-hanger
