One of those "no breasts please" votes was mine.

I clicked the wrong button I guess the word "boobs" distracted me!
I re-balanced the poll - +1/-1.

Please stay on track with this thread. It's about the rights of mothers to breast-feed when their child needs it.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

So looking at this logically on one hand you have a woman breastfeeding in a restaurant (for the sake of argument lets say she is doing so discreetly) or you have the alternative which is a screaming kid, stressed out parents frantically trying to calm the screaming child and lots of disapproving or complaining other customers. It's a tough choice.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

So maybe this is a silly question....but in this group's experience (those that have real experience with this), is breast-feeding in public generally acceptable behavior in Switzerland?

Been here 18 years and I've never heard of any complaints about mothers breastfeeding their babies in public places, so I would say it is generally acceptable.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

I notice it maybe once a year or so, last time was in a tram. That's not very often but I haven't witnessed somebody opposing it.

The 20 minuten Poll is now at 60% pro breastfeeding in restaurants. In the comments about 3 out of 4 statements are pro breastfeeding too... So I think that those who disagree with breastfeeding mostly either don't care enough or don't dare to interrupt a breastfeeding mother.

Good on the Scots - is this law applicable in England/Wales?

It seems that this may be part of an international movement to promote breastfeeding.

If it is, it's another sign that the world is changing - for the better!

Yes very good news indeed. They needed to evacuate the place so it was not just a case of throwing out the breast feeding. And it would appear that they need to spend quite a bit of money cleaning the place up

This reminds me of a funny story. This was about 8 yrs ago and my sister was flying to California with my then 6 week old neice. She had what you could call and abundance of milk. The little one started to cry so my sister took out her breast to start feeding her but before she could latch on milk shot over the two business men who were sitting next to her and hit the window. She said the look on their faces was priceless.
Did any get in their coffee?

Anyway, as for a woman -- who is already going 'nucking futs' from not leaving the house for days on end caring for an infant -- discreetly breastfeeding in a restaurant, who can really see her slightly bared breast? The guy at the next table rubbernecking?
A waiter passing her table?
A fellow diner on his way to the toilet?

C'mon! It's not like she's topless and sitting in the middle of the table in the middle of the dining room.

If you don't like the beautiful sight of a mum breastfeeding, just avert your eyes -- the way I avert my eyes if I see some rug-chested guy with a heavy gold chain round his red neck. The way I can't put my smarting eyes and nose outside if the diner next to me is smoking.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

Thank you Lob Rockster for starting this thread!

It reminded me a time when I was dining in a restaurant (in Amsterdam) with my husband and some friends, after a while i had to Bfeed my baby, so i got to the business, within few minutes the manager came around to our table asking very politely if i would like to feed my baby in restroom instead(they didn't have any babyroom or anything)
well i replied very politely whether he would like to eat his supper in Toilett...you can imagine his reaction;-)

brilliant all-round - but I would hope after the embarrassment of Lakeside (establishment that is) that they take their business and money elsewhere

Silent? With all sympathy, pick your fights. As long as it's only the Lakeside...

I guess we won't see them protesting at the dozens of Ladies' Night promotions that occur in the city every month.

It's what breasts are for! Some tend to focus on the recreational uses and forget this fact.

because society (man) has decided they are intimate. Just like man has decided many other things.
OK, here the lack of precision of English: Do you mean man as in men or as in human?

In any case, I think part of the issue is the dual purpose of breasts. Apart from the obvious, their shape, size and symmetry apparently signal quite a lot about the carrier's genetic and nutricional(sp?) health. Before groaning at me, why is it that women as the only female primate has visible breast even before having babies, and men are so interested in checking them?

Back to the original question: Yes, it is ok to breastfeed in public, but there are ways of doing it. I remember feeling quite uncomfortable and not knowing where to look when I was younger (after 2 children and 20 years, both novelty and hormones have worn a bit off), and I know of other single males feeling the same.

And in Denmark, you are not supposed to feel like that, so most of us shut up.

/Martin

Apparently comes from us walking upright. For several primate species, the rear is the thing the males look for in a female, and as we started walking upright, the focus of attention moved upwards, too. Can't remember where i read that.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

i breastfed my son for 15 months and my daughter for 10 months, mostly in the privacy of my home, however there were times when i was on a train, in a restaraunt or at a friends house when i had to feed. i simply lached them on under my top and covered them with a little blanket or muslim not smothering them or covering their face, but not putting breasts on show either, theres no need. people don't even know what you are doing unless they get really close, and even then they can only see a little person wrigling about geting a belly full!

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

having a poo is the most natural thing in the world but id rather not see that in public.

that said, i have absolutely no problem with mothers breastfeeding whereever they like.

I don't think you can compare having a poo & it's associated hygiene implications with breastfeeding a baby.....

Does that mean that men who stare at backsides are primitive? I must be a Neanderthal then...
