...... In maternity hospitals here you are really encouraged to breastfeed but since January I've found that in public no-one else breastfeeds and everyone stares! ...
come on, everyone stares anyway.

One time I had just come off the plane from here, went on the London underground, and almost got beaten because I was still in my Swiss-mind-set for staring..

At present I am just living in loose Tshirts that hide most things when feeding. Sometimes, only the truly astute notice.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

yes it is nice for restaurants and other places to provide an area to breastfeed but quite honestly why should a woman have to leave for anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes just because she is breast feeding? new mothers have much more limited time for socializing and enjoying their time outside of the house- she has a right to enjoy her meal, the company of her friends and family and feed her child as well. if some people have problems with seeing a woman breastfeeding- it's a hangup of their own, a twisted one but i'm sure they would be much worse off by having a screaming baby sitting near them in a restaurant.

breastfeeding mothers shouldn't be excluded or isolated because they are taking care of their child responsibly.

It might also be a consideration of the restaurant for those mothers who prefer to do it in a quiet, dedicated corner rather than in the middle of a crowded restaurant.

Most babies, when they reach a certain age, fidget more when feeding because there are lots of cool distractions to look at which slows down the feeding. Going off to a quiet corner can solve this problem.

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

So breastfeeding is now considered acceptable in some countries? NOW? Frankly, I find this topic depressing. My first grandchild is due in a few months, and I find it frustrating that people are still arguing the topic that was being argued when I had my first child. Breastmilk is and always has been, natural babyfood. Just like any other mammal. Demand feeding is a part of that. Therefore either we get to feed our babies as we go about our daily lives, or we be banished to our houses for the duration. Heavens!

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

non-issue, i.e. (a) natural. women shouldn't have to skulk away somewhere private, interrupt their conversations etc... just to feed their children.

the challenge is to try to think of occasions where public breastfeeding might be considered by a majority of people to be inappropriate. I started with the thought of maybe during a church or a funeral service but don't see why the mother should have to leave the service or, even worse, ignore the baby's cries thereby potentially disturbing proceedings? who would even notice?
obviously the topic has generated interest - 5,000 views until now...

PS - anyone living in "Central Schweiz", check out the new social network group at Facebook "Lucerne & Central Switzerland Expats" (also for CH locals).

Re: [Acceptable?] Breastfeeding in public

I breast fed my son everywhere here (restaurants, trams, trains etc) and there was never a problem. Albeit, I didn't get the 'whole thing' out and also covered my shoulder and baby with a thin coloured scarf. No problemo

Perhaps if you read the rest of the thread you will see that people aren't "arguing the topic". Switzerland protects women who wish to breastfeed in a public place so it's a non-issue.

Most of the thread is made up of personal experiences whether good or bad, something which you will find in any country either in the past or right now. Frankly, women's good and bad experiences will continue into the future, too, I should imagine.
