Why one needs to pay CHF30 for a child seat when ordering a taxi ?

How come the taxis in Z!urich that are already very expensive vs other major cities have to charge an extra CHF30 for car seat ? this is outrageous...

Re: Why one needs to pay CHF30 for a child seat when ordering a taxi ?

I didn't know they did. Do they all or is this one experience that you have had with one taxi-driver?

I suppose one problem is that having to fetch the seat and bring it back to wherever they are kept, causes the driver to miss out on his next fare-paying passenger. The seats are quite large and he can hardly tell his next guests that he cannot get their luggage in, as he is still carrying a car seat from his previous customer.

I've found this site and this info the Op gave seems to be correct for this firm - with the same reasoning as I wrote above. Not even a recent increase in the charges though. Looks like it has been in force for quite a while.

It's because they changed the law and now all children under a certain age must use a child seat when travelling in a car, regardless of whether that car blongs to their parents or is a taxi. The taxi trade had a long struggle to try and obtain an exception. The government turned a deaf ear.

the result is basically that

1) taxis may not turn down passengers without a good reason, and so this means they cannot turn away people travelling with children
2) they must therefore have a child seat stowed away in the boot and they must fit this every time a child travels
3) this costs them time and also occupies space meaning they cannot always accomodate passenger luggage
4) taxi drivers are very angry because of this and are venting their anger through high prices in the hope that somebody will see sense and repeal the legislation.

Looks like this is due to the new rule.

We charge a restitution fee of CHF 30.– per seat for this additional service, which compensates the driver for collecting and returning the seat to our control centre. A good investment in the safety of your children.

I've found this site
From that site:

"Safety for our smallest passengers too

Since 1 April 2010, new, more stringent regulations have been in force for the safety of children in motor vehicles. This provision also applies to taxis. The TCS offers an overview of the permitted child safety restraints.
Alpha Taxi takes the safety of its smaller passengers seriously, and on request will fit its vehicles with the required child safety seats. Please book your taxi at least one hour in advance and give the age and the weight of your child, to enable us to fit the correct seat. We charge a restitution fee of CHF 30.– per seat for this additional service, which compensates the driver for collecting and returning the seat to our control centre. A good investment in the safety of your children.
Seats can simply be raised for older children in every one of our vehicles (once), and this is available at no extra cost."

CHF 30 - PER SEAT!

this costs them time...
This would be the time they are spending reading a paper, smoking a fag and having a general chin wag while in queue of 20 other taxis?

Although, I can see that there is a space issue, however, time lost is pretty weak.

well, if you're happy to provide a service to drive to a centre pick up a seat and then take it back for less than 30chfs...

Hmm, I've been in a taxi on 2 occasions with my toddler and baby wasn't aware that I could request child seats. On both occasions my toddler just used a normal safety belt and I had my baby on my lap with a safety belt over the both of us.

This sound extremely dangerous. You are surely aware that even a minor collision would send your full body weight x speed on your baby's body?

Far better option would be to put seat belt on, and then hold the baby firmly.

We've been few times rejected in Basel airport, due to child car seat not being available in the car. However one taxi had foldable child seat (taking minimum space. He unfolded it, put it in place, secured it - and voila!

Yes, but it is per seat, so if you need two, it's CHF 60!

As Englishman, or woman, will tell you, you can't go off from a queue to do whatever you need to do, then come back again and jump back to where you had been in the queue.

Many moons ago, I worked as a chauffeur for a number of airlines for their First and Business customers. The hassle of ensuring the limited number of child seats were in the right cars at the right times was a complete arse. And you knew, everytime you did a drop off with the seat - your next pick up would be loaded with a pet elephant.

Re: Why one needs to pay CHF30 for a child seat when ordering a taxi ?

In Basel when we needed to go to the SBB at the Roaster's hour, we called a taxi and told them to have the car seat with. No extra fees that I am aware... If it was, it was nothing noticeable like this.

Re: Why one needs to pay CHF30 for a child seat when ordering a taxi ?

Thanks everyone for the clarification.

When you specify it when booking a cab, they charge you for the car seat. When you get back from the airport, they don't...

I just thought it was slightly outrageous overall bearing in mind that taxi fares are already noticeably more expensive in Zürich vs major other cities....Not great from a tourist or business point of view as one of the first things you do when you enter a new country is take a cab to get to your hotel...

I guess we have to complain at a higher level then...

Re: Why one needs to pay CHF30 for a child seat when ordering a taxi ?

K-Tipp 1. December 2010

According to the Stadt Polizei Zürich in the city of Zurich
this Fr.30.- surcharge for a chld's seat is not legal.
Inform the Police - Tel. 044 411 71 17

Regions vary.
Where there is an 'obligation to carry' as in Basel, Bern, Luzern, Winterthur and Zurich, the taxi firm cannot refuse to take children.
In St.Gallen this applies only to A-Taxis with a green Permit number.

No surcharge is allowed in Basel, Luzern, Winterthur and Zürich.

In Bern and St.Gallen the driver must inform the client about the surcharge before the journey.

Things might change/have changed again in the meantime though.

Does anyone know of a Zürich based Taxi company which does not charge a CHF30 surcharge for providing a child seat?
