as in finding a legal text that says "there is no 14 days rule"?
Pather, here is the law. There is no right of withdrawal/cooling off period for items purchased in a shop (in person)

Re: Problem with a wedding dress store Zurich

Yes very clear.

I agree with MathNut and many others that THE dress is important for THE big day. However- I'd also say that there is huge pressure from magazines, wedding fairs, friends AND specialised shops (with sales assistants on commission) etc, to spend spend spend. I know several young people in the UK who've ended up with serious debts right at the beginning of their marriage journey - and this has broken them up. Tragic - and just not necessary really. A very special day could often be organised without massive expense that will put parents and couple at risk of bankruptcy. It is NOT what it is all about surely.

In most other countries the legal aspect would be the same, signing on the dotted line would be a sealed contract. What may be different in other countries is that the shop may be willing to cancel the contract out of good will but they do not have to.
In most other places, there would be no document to sign! And in the case of clothing, there would often be a short period during which oine would be able to return it, if it was not suitable.

However, I get the impression that your partner was happy with her purchases until she got home and shared the news with you. Could it be that your reaction to her extra spending is what has changed her mind about the purchase?

My thoughts:
1. Aaawww heck, this may be the only time either of you get married - calm down and let her have her frivelous moment.

2. Uuummm, no... don't think I'll share the next thought.

I definitely signed a contractual form for my wedding dress purchase in the UK. I guess it is different from other clothing purchases because you order it so far in advance and they order it in turn from the supplier specifically for you. It's not something you just pick up from the shelf. However, they would certainly have been more customer orientated if I had wanted to change my mind ... although once the dress had been ordered from the manufacturer, I am not sure they would have had much leeway.

Yes, defo had to sign contract and pay hefty deposit on 2 daughter's wedding dresses in the UK - but in the UK you have so many days to change your mind, NOT here.

As someone who spend the day yesterday looking at wedding dresses (and trying them on) i can agree with it. The special dress will be one and you will know it as soon as you put it on. Maybe friends and family will not agree but it will be your day and must do whatever you want. And if you put on the second best dress you will still enjoy the day but feel like something is missing

Re: Problem with a wedding dress store Zurich

Kiwiguy,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Just a bit of advice for your intended (I know...flapping barn doors and all that)...for the other bits and pieces she will buy for her wedding, it would help to have a girlfriend (not family member) accompany her on the shopping trips; especially in the kinds of shops where they do the hard sell knowing that someone about to get married is perhaps an easier target emotionally (which sounds like the case in this shop). Also the friend can say if something suits her or not and hopefully be honest about it.

Sure, she signed on the dotted line and she is on a sticky wicket legally, and the shop is acting within its rights etc etc, however a I feel a good salesperson should be able to get money out of a customer without resorting to hard sell tactics - and I am more likely to return to or recommend a shop where they refuse to sell me something that is not going to be the right thing for me.

All the best for your big day.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Problem with a wedding dress store Zurich

In my opinion, unfortunately, its not country specific but wedding dress specific. Most places where you buy wedding dresses are places where you have to "order" the dresses. Once you sign/purchase the dress, the deal is done and its painful to rescind it. I personally dealt with a pushy sales woman for my wedding dress. She insisted on how beautiful it looked - I asked if I could take a picture to send to a friend for a 2nd opinion. oh no, not allowed. Then she offered me 10% discount if I buy the dress that day, not the next day or the weekend when I could come with a friend for a second opinion. THAT DAY ONLY. So in haste, I bought the dress only to realize it was a mistake. I could not return the dress of course and when I found another dress that was perfection (off the rack no less), I ended up spending 300 bucks and approximately 6 months selling the dress online. It is what it is but I would advise all future brides that when looking for a dress, always take someone that you trust with you to the store. And never make the decision in haste.

My friend owns a Bridal Store, I may be able to help you. Have sent you a Private Message.
My Swiss Husband believes that the Expats here getting don' always get treated as fairly as we should. He deals with all problems dealing in Retail or Trade Matters. When I try to deal with anything it is a waste of time. I am a Foreigner `End of Story"

La Robe in Orbe, speaks English too...even rents the dresses as opposed to just selling them

I may be wrong here, but the question is not whether the poor bloke can cancel his order, but whether he gets his money back.
Not sure if this will make you feel better, but I have met many brides who ordered their dresses at one of the the 2 wedding dress stores, they either decided they didn't like the dress, they ordered the dress and discovered they were pregnant or the wedding was cancelled. In every case, the girls were crying that they had spent a fortune, no refund, no return no exchange!

If there is a way out of if, I hope you can find it! Otherwise, cut your losses, whatever dress your fiancee will wear I am sure she will look stunning. The sales women can be very persuasive, it's so hard to say no!

If you can't get your money, get the dress, let her love it, enjoy it, and try and sell it after the wedding!

Good luck and congratulations.
