Who says hospitals in Zurich are the best because they are not

Over the last 3 weeks I have experienced the worst hospital treatment in my life. I was experiencing serve pain and after looking online I found out that it could be an abscess. So the next day I went to the university hospital only to be sent home and told that it was not an abscess but something else. After several days the pain got worse and I was experiencing all signs of an serious abscess. After visiting an English doctor I was sent straight back to the same hospital after they had mis-diagnosed me. I am not a doctor but even I knew what was wrong with me. I requested for an apology and all I got was a doctor telling me that these things happen. I have been in hospital for over a week and out of work for nearly a month – however if the doctor did the tests to rule out abscess he would of seen that I did have an abscess and not only would I not of had to have an operation due to the fact that the problem was caught early but I would not have been out of work for so long.
Nearly a month on and I have requested on several occasions an apology and I have yet to get it even though each time I ask the doctors know that they did wrong.
All I say if you are on your own here, make sure to go to the right doctor/hospital. I have found out that this university hospital is not the best so for all you guys out there don’t go here because one they never accept they done wrong, two you never see the same doctor, there are several doctors that seem to deal with you and not one and finally when you are told that you can go home, some of the nurses just want you out because there seems to not be enough beds! And oh they are rude. Some nurses were really nice but overall my experience with the hospitals and doctors here has been the worst and trust me when I say, I even told the hospital that the UK NHS was better than them.

also just make sure all the letters you get if your German is not so great then make sure everything is in English because the hospitals here really cover themselves when they mess up and if they have done wrong make sure you tell them every day and get the apology in writing don’t let them just send you management to verbally apologies.

Sorry to hear about your experience, abscesses can be awful. I don't think a missed diagnosis by one Doctor is hardly grounds to demerit every hospital in Zurich though, do you ?

I take it you are better and fully recovered ? All's well that ends well.

Fortunately not my experience (although it may change).
With the NHS I had to cue for 2 months for a simple ecography, here in Switzerland it was 2 days (and they threw in a tomography as well!).

And how much did you have to pay in the UK?
And how much did you , or you insurance company pay here ?

If you had had private cover in the UK you could have had it done just as quickly .....

Im so sorry for what you experienced. I think getting an apology from them will not change any of the facts, but only make you more upset about their response. I have only been in hospital because of both births of my kids and had the chance to go to university or triemli, however I went for a more private option in small hospitals, they are not in such a hurry to get people released and actually take more time in looking on you. If you ever have to go again to a hospital I will highly recommend either Uster or Zollikerber.

I'm not sure if it's like this here, but an apology is an admission of guilt and would be a serious problem for them in a legal action.

Sorry you've had to go through this and wish you a quick recovery.

Re: Who say’s hospitals in Zurich are the best because they are not

Interestingly, according to wheredoesmymoneygo.org my spendings on health care would be roughly the same in the UK as they are here, although this would not apply to much higher or much lower incomes...

Re: Who say’s hospitals in Zurich are the best because they are not

agree it is not all hospitals that are like this, but to be honest first time in zurich, get ill and after hearing all reviews that swiss are the best for health, my experience put me off...i actually had to pay around 15000chf for treatment and in the UK company paid for my private health insurance but at least if i stated that i think i may have a specific problem i am sure they would do tests to rule it out where as here, they just simply ignored the fact that it may have been an abscess.

As for legal action i would like to go down that route because the infection went into my blood and if i continued on the meds that were initially prescribed and just agreed with the initial diagnose i think i would of been either dead or in a serious condition compared to now.

I am on the mend thank you all but is taking a long time to heal. as for the apology i will get it because i dont think this was a laughing matter which most of the doctors that i saw just seemed to laugh it off!

sorry but I am not a toy or something they can just experiment with and secondly i hate doctors in london and rarely go unless it is serious but least i know they would take me seriously.

just think the new start is not going so well and just upset that i had to go thru so much pain before the doctors here believed that it was an abscess. I had an xray, ulta scan and several blood tests and only after doing the operation did another doctors tell me that i was right and that it was an abscess.

it was amazing that one doctor who by the way did not belong to the university hospital was able to tell me in 5 seconds that i had serve abscess where as at the hospital it took several doctors, scans, blood test and an operation for them to agree with me that it was an abscess! that is what is amazing.

by the way, thanks guys for the get well wishes...

Re: Who say’s hospitals in Zurich are the best because they are not

I have a pretty extensive experience of Swiss and UK hospitals and I have to say that I would prefer a Swiss one any time. However mistakes can happen anywhere and the one thing I have learned is that it is very rare for people to admit they are wrong and apologise. If I were you I wouldn't waste my time asking for apologies because you will hardly ever get them.

On a practical level, going to the Unispital directly unless it is an accident or emergency is not always a good idea as you cannot be sure of the level of experience of the person you initially see (it's a teaching hospital). Get yourself a good GP/Hausarzt and if you need to be referred to a hospital check which one he thinks is the best for your particular complaint and also make sure you will be seeing someone fairly senior.

Be careful,

Do you not think you should have told him your wife beat the crap out of you that evening ? It might have changed the picture on the diagnosis...

Does your bottom work now ? I think not, the symptoms are manifesting verbally

When someone creates a fake noob just to rant about something, I'd kind of like to hear the other side of the story before I get all warm and fuzzy and supportive.
