Whining and complaining

I find it annoying that people who have come to Switzerland because they like the country/want to earn more etc. are constantly complaining about the cost of things. To these I would like to say: look around you and try to enjoy the many advantages you have instead.

I do not understand that if it is all so bad, that they do not then go back home or across the border where apparently everything is so much better.

To the complaints around lack/cost of accomodation, I agree and we all suffer under these ridiculous prices, but they do not seem to realise that they themselves are contributing to the increased cost of accomodation in places such as in Zurich and in Geneva by all coming here. Sorry if I sound like the SVP.

This is a post in the complaints corner of the forum. They're doing it for the same reason you're doing it. High prices get them down and they're looking for a place to vent. If Pakistani refugees can cross borders, so can users of this forum - no one is here who doesn't want to be.

Re: Whining and complaining

I think for the most part it's just shock. Someone I know moved here and lived and worked in Zurich for around 2 years and now lives in the UK. Almost every time we speak with each other, she mentions how expensive it was living here when comparing it to the UK.
I live in ignorant bliss and I love it . I hail from a country where cost of living is so ridiculous it makes you cry.

People do not always understand the idea of capitalism, offer and demand, inflation and price dumping, right away. There is nothing wrong with asking for explanations about it, even if it is done with the kind of tone to be expected in a complaint corner on an internet forum. Things take time to understand.

Re: Whining and complaining

You can love it here and still be in a situation that makes you hate how expensive it is here...I'd have empathy with posters who complain about prices, means they might not be living well, who knows.. Does not mean it gives us right to snub them. I love hopping over to France, the price tag to it too, but living here makes more sense. If whiners off load here every now and then and it makes the real life a lot more normal since they found some nag buddies, something constructive might come out of it, they change the mindset a tad, then who cares. Excessive stuff is not healthy, sure, but honestly, for me and people coming from my kind of world and lifestyle, the price tag here is horrendous. 2000fr for daycare when we would pay 30fr back home, it does make me want to permanently grind my teeth. It sucks.

Re: Whining and complaining

Actually, all the complaining from anybody in Switzerland has done wonders for me. Because I've heard so much of it, I've learned that complaining can mean absolutely nothing at all. So for the most part, I don't pay attention to it, and go on not really caring about other people's complaints. It's liberating.

I went farther than you did...I started enjoying it. It gives me satisfaction to hear of all these people having all these difficulties in their lives, it just makes me enjoy mine and live it to the fullest. It has done wonders for me. Keep complaining hehe

That was mean wasn't it?

Thanks for the realism Exactly the Anglophone immigrants with their high living standard and their readyness to pay exorbitant prices and their desire for spacious and comfortable lodgings are pushing prices UP

I love whining and complaining. It cheers me up. I get really annoyed by people who complain about people complaining. Especially all these 'holier than thou' folks who whitter on about 'ooooh you live in Ch, you should embrace the Swiss life'. Now I didn't embrace life in the UK so why the fck should I wander around waxing lyrical about things here?. Everything is shit. I hate it all.

Wolli, not just the Anglophones. Seefeld is soon to become another Bundesland at this rate, and the most expensive one at that...

A lot of things here are rubbish and have been so for decades. Who on earth told you otherwise ???? Were you invited to get into this place ? or what exactly ? You do not have to embrace anything, you only ought to realize realities. If not, to take it with JFK "we never had to build walls up to prevent people from leaving us"

Thanks for the hint! I did miss out on what "Lakeside" of course means in German ! But as there already is Baden&Württemberg, there might be Seefeld&Mallorca and Germany might hand over Konstanz to the Canton of Zurich !

Yes, good complaint (ignoring the irony in it). We should all just accept everything totally without comment.

Do as you're told.

Keep quiet.

Follow the person in front.

I came for love.

The life we live is pretty comparative to my $28k/yr I was earning as a singleton in the US - factoring in the fact that when I was making that, my company was paying the majority of costs for health and dental, for life insurance, etc etc... and here we are paying for it out of pocket.

So, after paying bills, just like there, we have a couple hundred chf to "spend" on enjoyable things. We have to choose between out with friends once or twice, out by ourselves once for a nice dinner OR new clothes / shoes or other kinda-necessities-but-not-always.

Pardon me but I WILL complain that a simple bag of chips costs the equivalent of $5 instead of $0.99 and that the local grocery chains (Coop and Migros) charge as much for a single nice angus steak that I have to cook myself as I paid for a nicely done steak at a restaurant in the US "with all the trimmings".

Meanwhile, that's my story...

Some of the other folks on this forum are students - or teachers - earning squat and because they too have to pay insurances out of pocket (by law no less), living on less than squat.

Some of the others, although here on "big expat packages" took the job because it is better in some way than wherever they were before BUT still have mortgages or autos or other loans outstanding "back home" which eat into their earnings here while STILL having to pay for life here at the same time.

Not everyone is crass like this American, actually talking about being less well-off than I'd like, can't do this or that because of money, etc etc so they complain and continue doing what the crowd does (or simply quietly saying no, they can't / aren't interested) because honestly, it's none of anyone else's business how much money one has, or what sort of debt they have...

So, get over the complaining already, and stop complaining about it.

Is that a meta-meta-complaint? I'm getting confused now...

Whether it's prices or anything else, I dislike complainers (including myself, when the urge to whine strikes me). Complaining about them, in true impotent Internet rage fashion (DB style), is a lot more fun than listening to them. Or egging them on, as the mood strikes me.

As for the prices, well, my first-class vacations are crazy cheap on a Swiss salary. That's at least one positive to balance the domestic prices.

Re: Whining and complaining

I tell everyone at home that everything in Switzerland costs double, that's why there is the 2 Fr store whereas we have the $1 store.

In some ways it works out better financially for us living here. In other ways we are worse off. In the end it's a bit of a wash.

I miss home because... it's *home*. There everything seems normal, I'm not constantly shocked by prices or attitudes or unsure of where to go to get something. People relate to eachother in ways that I'm accustomed to and that feel natural to me. I'll be SO happy to return when the time comes. Not because I hate it here. No, no. Because I love it there!

What I really dislike is the suggestion that because we choose to be here we should just suck it up and not complain, or go home. This is lazy And simplistic thinking. When you live in a country, contribute your taxes, use its services and experience daily life there, you have every right to have a good moan about it - whether you could actually change anything is another matter!
