That reminds me... if you have a co-worker (or "signigicant other") that you really want to annoy, just change the keyboard layout... or switch the mouse settings..

If you had, I guess I would have had to switch to Anthony's side.
I guess because I don't like Apple and the iPad, I'm now the Anti-Christ for you :-)

Like your current avatar much better than your last one, btw.

You can, of course, change the language and then keys so the key would match output, but I switch between several keyboard languages so taking the keyboard apart every time is a bit of a hassle.

Re: Damn I hate this country

Yeah, yeah, I know I'm joining a 10 page thread late in the game.

To the OP: I get it. Been there myself.

Two words: long weekends. Once a month, take a Friday off and use the 3 day stretch to escape. If possible, take Thursday, too and make it 4.

When I was in Japan, it was to Hawaii.

When I was in Germany, it was to Brussels or Amsterdam or London.

Figure out what your work schedule, family budget, etc. can handle and do it. No excuses, make it happen. If that doesn't ease at least some of the pressure after 5 or 6 months, then yeah... it might be time to start picking out your next country. Some people reach the acceptance stage. Some don't. Simple as that.

By the way, I greatly enjoyed living in Japan and Germany but at the end of the day: they were both very foreign to me. The cultural pressures on a resident are very different from the pressures on a weekend tourist. Small getaways to OTHER foreign cultures did help greatly.

If it's any consolation, the Amsterdam trips came LATER. I took the train with a backpack and wore flip-flops.

I understand perfectly, I used to live in Oslo, not exactly very central nor culturally exiting, and no, skying is not a culturally and intellectually satisfactory experience to me.

However,

strategies, as good as those you suggest, are a short term solution. Long term question should be: why should I stay in a place that is so foreign to me, that I need a weekend off each month? Why would you do that to yourself? Not being able to get out of the place right away is understandable, even for the OP in Bulle. But that should mean looking for a long term solution out of the hole one feels trapped in. My advice would sebsequently rather be: get yourself a job in a place that is culturally not foreign to you and leave! If not now, as soon as possible. Short term strategies like nomadic's will help you in the meantime.

Re: Damn I hate this country

I think the problem is that Switzerland is perfect for a Swiss person. One that has planned ahead, went to Gymnasium or did an apprenticeship (sp?) at 16 and then went on to do further education or university etc... meaning a person who has all the right certificates/diplomas to prove his worth, because you are simply nothing without those things. To prove my point, one of the first questions I always get asked by people I meet is "What is your profession/what are you?"... And who wants to start a three-year-long underpaid apprenticeship when he/she is not between 16-19, for a job which in a lot of cases you could do in other countries with no education at all? I understand why the Swiss have high standards, but sometimes I think it's a bit ridiculous.

To all the Swiss on the forum, please try to understand that it is not easy to start out in Switzerland if you did not grow up here... But I'm sure that to most Swiss people it is a wonderful/the best country to live in.

Perhaps our immigration laws aren't tough enough, after all.

To the OP and all the others who think life and the people here are s**t:

PACK THE F**K UP AND LEAVE.
And please, I think we all know what Swiss people think of "Auslaender"... you don't have to remind us.

Dear Anthony1406,
If you think living in CH is so grim may i suggest you try life in the UK, then i think you would realize what a lucky chap you really are. It would be a good reality check.

So do I. But that's different. As a comparison, while parents can complain about what annoying brats their kids are, they still don't want to hear it from other people.

Whilst I agree on your kids comment I have to say that the same can't be said for me and my opinion of my home country. I don't care if people criticise it as it is crap on a lot of points and quite often my opinion of England is lower than any foreigner's.

Skimming is not reading.

I clearly stated that if weekend breaks don't help him reach the "acceptance stage", it *might* be time to start packing.
