Re: Damn I hate this country

Aw man,

Bad day, bad week, bad month?
Iím pretty sure weíve all been there, weather we admit it or not. There are definitely downsides of everything.
Being an expat is hard, living in a small village is hard (Bulle, seriously?), not being fluent in the local language makes it hard to get friends.
Iíve had my dooown times, and felt very low. I think I didnít even realize myself how low I felt until a co-worker who tends to dress like a clown asked me in front of everyone why I was always so angry. First I wanted to slap her for dare saying that to me (I mean, coming from a bloody clown!), but then I looked out of the window and realized it wasnít raining outside. It was only raining on me.
It takes a lot of strength to get yourself out of it, you need to focus on the positive sides of your life and if you can find one positive thing to think about every day, you will get more positive automatically.

My job may be boring, but at least I have a job and a boss who I donít want to kill.
I may not afford to eat out every night, but at least I can afford to eat.
My flat may be crap, but at least I didnít loose my home in an earthquake.
I may find it hard to mingle with the locals, but at least Iím not living in a country where gang bangs are daily business.

Get in touch with your self; love yourself and others will love you too.
Find something to do, that takes your mind off everything you hate. Set goals and watch yourself improve. Go out for a run, built something or create something.

Chin up man, there is always tomorrow.

never said I hate all Swiss, I certainly do not. BUt i like to generalize.....as we mostly do when talking bout populations.

ALSO if you look at my location....apparently the Gruyerien are the worst of the worst. and the once I know reaLLY are. so that prob has lots to do with it...
Actually, the worst of the worst is anyone from north of the Alps.

I think the problem is that Switzerland is perfect for a Swiss person.
Is their one country for which this formula wouldn't work?

(Please do not discuss whether France is made for French, as we all know, being British, that French are not real humans anyway - discuss the rest of the planet).

My boss is half-hungarian and is a total pain in the ass.

Am I allowed to conclude now that all half-hungarians are pain in the asses?

Dawiz u were saying you wouldnt go on a public forum USA, UK etc and complain on a public forum. It is hard to draw any kind of meaning from it since you first need to live in a country where there is as much to complain about as there is in Switzerland. Then, the local population has to treat you the way swiss folk treat foreigners. In countries like USA, UK etc you might get the odd person here or there who will not like you as a foreigner (although some specific races are now being frowned upon), but a majority of the population will have no problem with you, and so usually not enough to make you feel like you need to vent on a public forum.

Seriously - as a Swiss, reading this thread is like a slap in the face. I was expecting to see a lot of bashing the OP after his initial comment, instead most of the posters seem to be chiming right in.

Perhaps our immigration laws aren't tough enough, after all.

To the OP and all the others who think life and the people here are s**t:

PACK THE F**K UP AND LEAVE.

Be careful, don't jump to a racial conclusion too early, it could be the "Other Half" that is the pain.

I see the concept of country is foreign to you. It's ok, nobody's perfect. My humour isn't either, but it still makes me laugh (at you in that case, but that is just a detail, nothing personal).

'tis true, 'tis true. Context, as always, is king. Anyway, I'm in Switzerland because I like it. Right, I'm walking to Schober and getting myself a bircher muesli and a black coffee. Later peeps.

Well well some peeps are even grumpier than moi! Well just for the crack then, if you were born in Guantanamo, what would be your nationality?

Re: Damn I hate this country

Makes me think of one school at taught at. 3 of the staff had been there forever, and were constantly moaning about EVERYTHING in the school. We were chatting and I suggested for the first time that perhaps it was time for them to move on and apply to work in another school. As soon as I said that, they started giving all the advantages of their current (for 2 of them the only ever) school, and that they it may be worse elsewhere, etc, etc, they might not be able to transfer their seniority (and salary), and so on. This discussion went on for years (I was in that school for 6 years) - moan, moan bl***Y moan. They were hugely shocked when i suggested one day but at the end of the day, they should either go and look elsewhere, or stop their constant moaning. I left a year later, as I wanted to teach in a 6th Form college. 15 years later they have just retired from the same school, same job... and I know they continued to MOAN to the bitter end.

It is absolutely normal to dislike (hey hate even) some aspects of ones own country and any other place one lives in - and decide what to do on balance. I hate some aspects of Switzerland, MY country - just as I disliked some aspects of life in the UK. However if I HATED ALL aspects of my life somewhere, I'd really DO something about it and go elsewhere. Even if it meant a lower salary or standard of living. So if I said 'if you hate it that much, GO' - it wouldn't be because I am racist or that I have no sympathy- but because it makes sense, surely.

I've met a lot of people in the past who believe moving to another Country will turn their lives around and somehow make them happier, more fulfilled, etc. I blame those c***y programmes like Life in the Sun- etc. The reality is that moving away from known systems and support structures, can make things much worse- especially if underlying personal issues/problems are there. It's a bit like believing that having a new baby will somehow miraculously 'heal' a couples relationship. It very rarely works.

Yeah, yeah, I know I'm joining a 10 page thread late in the game.

To the OP: I get it. Been there myself.

Two words: long weekends. Once a month, take a Friday off and use the 3 day stretch to escape. If possible, take Thursday, too and make it 4.

When I was in Japan, it was to Hawaii.

When I was in Germany, it was to Brussels or Amsterdam or London.

Figure out what your work schedule, family budget, etc. can handle and do it. No excuses, make it happen. If that doesn't ease at least some of the pressure after 5 or 6 months, then yeah... it might be time to start picking out your next country. Some people reach the acceptance stage. Some don't. Simple as that.

By the way, I greatly enjoyed living in Japan and Germany but at the end of the day: they were both very foreign to me. The cultural pressures on a resident are very different from the pressures on a weekend tourist. Small getaways to OTHER foreign cultures did help greatly.

I work in the bar industry....no long weekends possible. take during the week you say...the gf has a 'normal hours' job so she cant then.....

always something isnt it.
