ok...as a African-born (black guy- yeah lets make it controversial!!), after seven months in Basel, i might say i got used to the pros and cons of the place...BUT ONE!! It really disturbs me the behaviour of virtually the bulk of tenders and cashiers in the supermarkets and shops- when they attend a white person, the smile comes from one ear to another, and the good manners are pristine...finish attending this one, and next comes me..they totally change, as a sunny day suddenly changes to a blizzard!! (and without bragging, i can position myself in the quite perfect British gentleman type)...no smile, no help, sometimes not even "gruezy"!!!...pleease, someone (preferably a Swiss-born) explain me that!!

That's not a smile, it's a grimace. Be happy you don't get it too ;)

I find there are far more visible minorities in Basel than in Zurich (general observation). Anywhere else around and inbetween I also find a change in manners (me=Caribbean-ish), it turns to disgust if I break out into my notorious obnoxious American English. They usually take that time to comment to the closest Swiss something about the foreigner etc. etc. I love they dealing with them in perfect Swiss-German. They are suddenly smiles and happy to ask and learn about me

Sadly, this is perhaps the case. And as a Swiss I cannot explain this, and would never ever excuse it.

Re: Damn I hate this country

It's a funny thing. When I used to shop regularly at the local Spar in Walchwil, the guy on the checkout got to know me. He knew that I did not speak German (Swiss or otherwise) and he spoke fluent English. When I saw him I always greeted him with a Gruezi and a smile and when it came to paying he always, always quoted the amount in Swiss German, so every time we had to go through the rigmarole of him turning his till around to show me the price, as he simply would not state the amount in English!!

Re: Damn I hate this country

Whew, slogged through 15 pages. The thread was too interesting to pass.

To Anthony1406:
I have lived in five countries on three continents using four different languages. Each of those countries has a strong identifying culture where it is difficult to "fit" in. But with time I did fit in in each country. It just takes time. I love all five of those countries (although you can probably guess which is my favourite).

It's because they're racist. They're not mean or anything. It's that excusable sort of racism, the sort you'd get in rural Yorkshire in the 1720s because of lack of education. Because, basically, you live in rural Yorkshire in the 1720s. Sorry.

I am an Asian Swiss and I can also attest to that. "Bonjour Madame", "Bonjour Monsieur", to everyone and then to me the cashier says nothing. Unfortunately this is not limited to the Swiss; this happens everywhere where Asians are not the majority and I am afraid there will be a small number of people who will categorise you as "foreign", get uncomfortable, and refuse to acknowledge you. I have come to accept this because racism will always be among us.

But for every incident like this, there are hundreds of happy times with the people of whatever country I am living in. So my advice: just think of the nice people and ignore the ignorants.

It's not because you're black, per se - but because you are, they think there's a strong chance you might be (excuse the language) ....... French.

Just play up and babble in pseudo African Bongoland language. Let rip by holding an imaginary spear, point at an imaginary monkey. Make exaggerated dance steps from side to side. If they can't be civilised with you, be mischievous in return. It's not technically rude of you to take the whatsit. Must be freakin' tiresome, though, but not limited to life in Switzerland, sadly.

The new owner apparently hates all things Swiss

I sincirely do HATE it when the Swiss young ones come in though, not joking. They fight, burp, fart, break shit all the time, yell superloud the whole damned night. needless to say I kicked them out with pleasure. now they are slowly coming back cause they can see the fun the normal educated (uni students from 85 different nationalities) people have in a bar without doing all of the above.

It's because you are either an economic refugee or a drug dealer (maybe both) and you live on their expense and most probably entered the country illegaly without papers. In the next month you will see Switzerland full of posters from the SVP telling you excatly this.

Learn a few sentences in perfect Swiss German for these situations. People will be stunned.

Lets use this to get all frustration out with this hole of a country.

I hate every single second i am here,
I hate the people
I hate the system
i hate the police
I hate everything about it.
you get ripped off every single second you are here
yes you earn more but prices do not equate that into buying power

yes you might say, move the hell out, well current situation does not allow for that....so no. If I could I would be long gone and NEVER come back to this HOLE.
But, this country NEVER had to build a wall up to prevent people from leaving the place If you are suffering so much, hand your business over to one of your employees, and GET OUT with the next train. And then either continue by train or take an airplane. Alternatively you of course can depart by motor-car.

Give the contract to move your belongings to a removal company who will love the order, take out all money off your bank-account(s), and up up and away

What DB said

I have yet to meet an expat who doesn't at some time or another go through periods where they loathe their host country, the work environment, the people, the weather etc etc with a passion. It can become all consuming, we spend hours thinking of ways to get out of this 'hellhole' and complaining to all who will hear and hopefully understand what we're going through. Most of us go through cycles of it until we acclimatise and this can take many, many years.

None of this is a reflection on Switzerland or the Swiss people. Comments like 'if you don't like it, leave' are not helpful in this situation. In this mindset we honestly and truly really would leave if we could!

I've met expats who have beachside apartments on the best beaches in Sydney, surf almost every day, work hard but play hard and they too go through periods where they loathe everything about Australia and the Australian people, mentality etc. Then they go home, get an adjustment in perspective (Christmas in England will generally do it ) and come back to the flies, over work, heat and place they loathed 2 weeks ago declaring they love it and will never ever leave

Expats here are just the same. It is a symptom of the lifestyle that many now have in a global working environment.

Four months ago if you'd told us we could leave; my husband and I would have packed our bags and would be impatiently waiting for you at the car door before you finished your sentence. Our mindset changed and we ended up fighting to stay here a little longer.

But I can't say that in another 6 months I again wont be trying to leave and detesting the place. Please be patient with us... we're new here
Sorry, but are you joking ? "Expats at some time loathe ...." ? Ever realized that most more or less modern Swiss at times did so as well ? And ever realized that 100 times more Swiss have emigrated than other people have IMmigrated ?

Had they not emigrated, people would now stay "chrüüzbiiget"

Re: Damn I hate this country

I know so many people living the rat race in London and elsewhere in the UK who would give their eyeteeth to come here- and perhaps would then give their eyeteeth to go elsewhere forever chasing the perfect dream and a respite from said rat race. And then dream with rosy glasses of the last place (that seemed dreadful at the time)...

One thing is for sure though, if you are not happy where you are, you are likely not to be happy in the next place.

I saw this on a postcard once and quite like it :Happiness is a very difficult choice you have to make everyday.

not what I said, but this site was not designed for the Swiss bashing on the foreigners cause they have noting good to say about their native country. you are a native here and do not have the same vision or experiences someone whos not from here does.

Doesnt mean you are not welcome to comment or anything like that.

But, do you want to say, that all NON-Swiss from around the globe have a common vision of things, and that all Swiss have another vision of things ?

And, have you ever realized that quite many Swiss, at times even a majority, might share some of your objections about THIS country ? My impression unfortunately is that you have gone with your emotions to the point of no return. And at a certain stage, to get out, at least for some weeks, may be an absolute requirement, not for Switzerland, not for your own country, not for the world but FOR YOU !
