Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone, didnt know there was so many that go through this.....

I really do believe it is the physical place I am living. I always lived in a big house and these apartment walls are just closing in on me. Also just went to Belgium this weekend and it was exceptionally good to be back (but i wouldnt move back there) . Its the stack of unpaid (and unfair once again) bills at the moment, the job which has become very tiring and a boss thats nearly impossible to deal with....and tells me I shouldnt be so nice to people(bar industry of everything)

gf cant leave because she is doing a degree and transferring is not possible due to scholarships.

And I have the prospect of staying here another 5-7 years as im in the process of buying a bar /restaurant cause I have found the perfect spot right next to Uni.

After that Ill be packing up and move to california I think. (gf is from there (she is Swiss-American)) and give it a shot there. I lived in the USA before and up until now it was the only place I liked living.....

oh well I guess Ill just have to buckle up and go for the ride......Thanks again everyone, glad to know Im not alone.

PS funny how all the foreigners are lending a helping hand, yet the Swiss once are shooting it down once again, and it is exactly that which I dislike about the Swiss people (granted Im talking down on your country but like said before, this site is not designed for you but for the foreigners....)
Just to put the records straight, the name of the forum is NOT "foreignforum.ch" but "englishforum.ch".

and that you apparently regard some definite Englishmen as "Swiss" is "unintended humour" from your part

Re: Damn I hate this country

I've always been tolerant of people criticising the Swiss, and respected the fact that they need a place to let off steam, have fun, etc.

But now, EF?

Well, it looks like this site now has anti-swiss moderators, who support the idea that the Swiss should be gone from this country, that it's people eat crap food, and that it's culture is worthless, etc.

It looks to me that it's becoming an actual hate site. Because that's what people tell about other people on hate sites and it's moderators (and therefore the people resonsible) support it.

I'll be writing an official complaint about this "hate site" (englishforum.ch) to the authorities. I expect the other Swiss on this forum to contact me via PM.

Continue.

Moderators can and are encouraged to express their personal opinions, quite independent from the tasks assigned to them - in making a judgment call.

Complaints Corner is a section to let off steam be it by Swiss or non-Swiss - it has always been so.

Hawaii has better weather, cheaper cost of living, friendlier people, and the ocean was closer. But CH has faster internet. Few places in the US have 100mbps connections, so I'd say the balance tips in favour of CH. Also, CH has fewer Americans.
But no work . just low pay kitchen work

I sincirely do HATE it when the Swiss young ones come in though, not joking. They fight, burp, fart, break shit all the time, yell superloud the whole damned night. needless to say I kicked them out with pleasure. now they are slowly coming back cause they can see the fun the normal educated (uni students from 85 different nationalities) people have in a bar without doing all of the above.
Umm, that's pretty much what I did when I went to bars while a university student back in the US!

Re: Damn I hate this country

Are you talking about the students from Glion ?
The ones that basically distroyed the flats where they were living in and got kicked out cause they were having parties with super loud music til early in the morning and there's better, having sex on the balcony !!!
Glion had to build appartment blocks just for them cause no "agency" would accept them in their flats ! They may not fight, burp, fart, brake shit in a bar but gez they ARE REAL PIGS AND SPOILT little shits !! Hum, sorry, I just never got a good contact with those students and I'm sure, they're not all like that, just like not every Swiss people is racist
and narrow-minded.

Next time I go to Bulle, I'll stop by !

Re: Damn I hate this country

Absolutely. All I'm saying is that if somebody is so unhappy here and truly hate absolutely everything here in CH, or in their job, or marriage, or whatever - they should find ways out, for THEIR sake. There is nothing anti-foreigner there, I can assure you. I am British too and the UK and its people still is VERY very close to my heart- I have my children and grand-children there and so many friends, and just have to go every couple of months, I miss it so much.
I love having so many of you here in CH. But if you hate everything here with all your heart, it is time to go, surely.

English like the place or like the language? Because I know that there is no excuse for not being English, I got the message very early on that forum, thanks, but if the language is not enough, please make it official in the rules of the forum.

We're foreigners here, most of us. If you've ever been a foreigner somewhere yourself then you know what it's like. If not, please try to imagine. It can be a rewarding experience but also very frustrating. You do need to vent occasionally, or go mad.

...and I'm sure you don't want a bunch of mad ungrateful foreigners running around your country so please bear with us when we need to let off some steam.
I think, there are some very important aspects to be considered

> If you are from a poor nation and decide that it will be better ANYwhere than in your home country (SriLanka, Cambodia, Southern India, disadvantaged parts of North Africa) you of course have to accept ANY place. But if you get from a more or less affluent country to elsewhere than you should be careful about the actual location. Countries have widely different locations on offer. A place like "Bulle" would never have been my choice, in whatever country.

> situations matter. I still remember, when I at the ticket-counter of British Rail got, in return to a 10-pound-note, not less than 18 heavy 50-pence pieces !! I was really furious and angry which apparently was visible. A BR-controller asked me why I looked like being at 100 Volts and I angrily told him. The man burst out in laughters and said "and now you think we Brits are all that weird and crazy ??" and we then were in laughters both. The man told me to go forward to the train bistro on wagon ..... and that I then could deposit one or two of those pieces. The sun was shining again

> the opener of this post apparently is a Pub chief of Belgian origin. He apparently came to the conclusion to have chosen the wrong country and the wrong place, and everything else wrong as well. I told the man many months ago on a different thread to STOP. His place in Bulle to all evidence is a very profitable one, and so I think he has the means and the experience to start anew either in Belgium or in any other country of the EU (incl associates) of where he understands the language.

> it can be time to get different air. I still remember how I after having had my apprenticeship behind me, maddened by almost 4 months of military service, was fed up with this country, and when having departed to London for three months to learn English, avoided contact with anything even remotely "Swiss". I kept a healthy distance away from places like Swiss Centre and thelike. I read British papers, watched broadcasts of BBC and ITN, enjoyed Indian food, enjoyed different views, enjoyed a different way-of-live, and when I at the end of December returned to Zurich, my attitudes had relaxed.

> back to "Anthony". He has to quit out of Bulle and that area. As he most presumably is rather on the beer drinking side and not the wine-drinking, I would not recommend Lugano, but rather places like Mulhouse, Colmar or Strassburg

Sorry, but are you joking ? "Expats at some time loathe ...." ? Ever realized that most more or less modern Swiss at times did so as well ? And ever realized that 100 times more Swiss have emigrated than other people have IMmigrated ?

Had they not emigrated, people would now stay "chrüüzbiiget"

Just to be clear. I was not discussing the Swiss or their mentality but rather that of any expat no longer residing in their native homeland. Whether in Australia, Switzerland, England, Japan etc

I have no (and do not pretend to have) knowledge of Swiss people having issues with their homeland. Most, if not all I have met, appear exceedingly proud of it.

Actually, I friend of mine has a very successful Irish pub in Lugano (near Franklin College), in fact I stopped by with my daughter tonight after I picked her up after work, the place was packed (ok, it is the Italian 150 year birthday today)

Also, when Italians go out, they drink beer. I asked a friend "why?", he said that for Italians, wine is every day stuff and beer is for "special" occasions!

Come on, it's just venting. Happens once a month in the forum. Get used to it! Generalization is pretty common in Switzerland too ("nothing against Jugos, I know a few myself, but....blablabla). All my respect to the OP to try and open his own business.

And it is true, it is really difficult to make friends among the Swiss as we normally have our own clique and speak a language nobody understands even when learning for example Standard German. It's not helpful and leads to frustration sometimes.

At least when Anthony opens his bar we can visit him and destroy all the inventory.
Well, my compassion for foreigners who learnt Standard German and feel vandalized by Swiss German is rather limited I mean, I learnt English in London, and on arrival in Texas had to realize that all my relatives overthere spoke a rather weird language , and I learnt Arabic from two Palestinian teachers, and on arrival on holidays in Cairo had to realize that those Egyptians did not care for a nanosecond about High Arabic and even less do people in the Maghreb. In the household of an uncle (died in the meantime) in Toulon-Hyères, I had to see that his wife spoke French with a strong Bordeaux-accent, her lady-friend of ages however spoke a beautiful Parisian French, and other guests spoke
- Langue d'Oc
- Provençal
- Patois de Haute-Savoie
- my uncle a mix of Neuchâtelois and Vaudois
- some ladies from the Alsace a Lorraine French and so I spoke with them in a nice mix of everything

So what ? Different languages, different dialects , different accents, all is good to keep your brains up and keep dementia away
