LOL - some of us who learnt basic English at school then had to cope with cockney, and later Geordie, Scouse and Brummie- and we survived. Glaswegian was a bit of a challenge, but we got there (sort of).
Come on you Brits - you are not going to let a silly thread like this spoil your great British sense of humour - if you do, You've been here tooooo long.
Vent away, have a rant, take the mick - great. But living with hatred in your heart everyday is not good for you- only you will know when it's time to go.
over and out, nightie night, sleep tight.

| | Re: Damn I hate this country | Quote: | | | | | ok...as a African-born (black guy- yeah lets make it controversial!!), after seven months in Basel, i might say i got used to the pros and cons of the place...BUT ONE!! It really disturbs me the behaviour of virtually the bulk of tenders and cashiers in the supermarkets and shops- when they attend a white person, the smile comes from one ear to another, and the good manners are pristine...finish attending this one, and next comes me..they totally change, as a sunny day suddenly changes to a blizzard!! (and without bragging, i can position myself in the quite perfect British gentleman type)...no smile, no help, sometimes not even "gruezy"!!!...pleease, someone (preferably a Swiss-born) explain me that!! | | | | | Well, seeing your place on your profile, it becomes clear. I mean, it is an area where also people from the Zürich-Schaffhausen etc area who do not speak true Baslerisch, will get treated as if having brought a "blizzard" with them !
And forget the "British gentleman" please. Employ African charm or Portuguese charm.
And most of all, try to acquire a real "Baaasel-Tiitsch" and then things will open up.
I btw. know a chap, also named "Markus", of Nigerian origin "ethnically" but a perfect Baaasler who speaks Baaslerisch as anybody, and apparently is fully accepted in Basel.
So, please, take it easy | This user would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post:

After that Ill be packing up and move to california I think. (gf is from there (she is Swiss-American)) and give it a shot there. I lived in the USA before and up until now it was the only place I liked living..... | | | | | Moving to the US especially SoCal will not exactly be a walk in the park in terms of opening and running a business. To open a bar, expect to pay high taxes, (California is the most unfriendly state in the US when it comes to small business tax conditions). You will also need to have a high US credit score to access any capital, as lending requirements are currently very strigent in California. (Swiss credit history cannot be substituted for US credit history to create a high credit score). Also, you will need a liquor license, to run an establishment that serves alcohol. Expect the bureaucratic run around when applying for this license ( you will wish you were back in Switzerland when confronted with the US bureaucratic apparatus). Expect extreme competition (there are bars everywhere in Cali), there are many businesses in California that open up and just don't make it. Above all, expect angry patrons who get drunk, yell and throw stuff around (you might find Swiss youths to have better manners than US youths). Also, in Cali everyone is broke, the economy is still in shambles and the workers you will hire will likely be unproductive and tired since they will be balancing two to three other jobs just to make ends meet. Thats if you can hire any workers that actually speak English and not exclusively Spanish. Finally, I realize you might have a picture of how the US was before 08' but after the crises, the business landscape in California has changed quite a bit from my understanding. The feeling you get is that more businesses are closing rather than opening. So before you rush over to the US, you should weigh your options carefully. Of course you could have had the expericence of opening and running a business in California and if that is the case you may know all this information already.

| | Re: Damn I hate this country | Quote: | | | | | I've always been tolerant of people criticising the Swiss, and respected the fact that they need a place to let off steam, have fun, etc.
But now, EF?
Well, it looks like this site now has anti-swiss moderators, who support the idea that the Swiss should be gone from this country, that it's people eat crap food, and that it's culture is worthless, etc.
It looks to me that it's becoming an actual hate site. Because that's what people tell about other people on hate sites and it's moderators (and therefore the people resonsible) support it.
I'll be writing an official complaint about this "hate site" (englishforum.ch) to the authorities. I expect the other Swiss on this forum to contact me via PM.
Continue. | | | | | I think you exaggerate. If you look through the posts you can see people enjoying this and that, being in a nice place in Küssnacht/LU, having meetings at nice places, etc. In this case here, a frustrated chap fumes and gives free course to his emotions. No president has been murdered here lately, so that there is no reason for a frustrated bar owner to try to kill an accused killer | The following 2 users would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post:

| | Re: damn i hate this country | Quote: | | | | | Just to be clear. I was not discussing the Swiss or their mentality but rather that of any expat no longer residing in their native homeland. Whether in Australia, Switzerland, England, Japan etc
I have no (and do not pretend to have) knowledge of Swiss people having issues with their homeland. Most, if not all I have met, appear exceedingly proud of it. | | | | | Must be YOUR influence on them. I for ages met heaps of CH citizens who were heavily annoyed and displeased with their country.
You may ask whey then things do not change. But things DO change constantly, but in a place where right against left, one area or Canton against the other gets outbalanced, you have to push through changes step-by-step

Hate is not the same as complaints or criticisms. I don't think EF has gone that far.
Let the expats rant. In fact if some become so sure of themselves that the Swiss are so terrible, uneducated, uncultured, intolerant, etc., etc. then they actually look exactly like the caricature of the Swiss that they imagine.
Then the rest of us can have a laugh at their expense. | The following 5 users would like to thank Suisse2008 for this useful post:

| | Re: Damn I hate this country | Quote: | | | | | Actually, I friend of mine has a very successful Irish pub in Lugano (near Franklin College), in fact I stopped by with my daughter tonight after I picked her up after work, the place was packed (ok, it is the Italian 150 year birthday today )
Also, when Italians go out, they drink beer. I asked a friend "why?", he said that for Italians, wine is every day stuff and beer is for "special" occasions!
Tom | | | | | You see, beer in Italy only got into "swing" in the 1950ies, when "returnees" from "North-of-the-Alps-Europe" brought the idea with them and existing breweries expanded and new ones got established. Now of course there are things like
the nice Moretti
or
but, beers in the 1950ies and early 60ies were rather rare in Italian provinces like the Toscana, the Emilia Romagna, the Lombardia or the Liguria
I still remember when, in the mid60ies on the Toscanese coastline (Riviera della Versiglia) our fathers, Italian and Swiss alike, were drinking Peroni and we boys Oran-Soda or Lemon-Soda or some SanPellegrino Aranciata

Maybe i'm missing sometihng in this thread? | | | | | Just wondered about the same ! I have no idea about his finances, but his place there should be splendid. He already spoke about leaving the place half a year ago. An option for him would be to open up a dependance in a more urban place, be it Strassburg, Colmar, Mulhouse, Basel, Zurich, Lugano, Milano, LaSpezia or Viareggio, move partially or fully to the second place and keep the Bulle place for commercial reasons

| | Re: Damn I hate this country | Quote: | | | | | Are you talking about the students from Glion ?
The ones that basically distroyed the flats where they were living in and got kicked out cause they were having parties with super loud music til early in the morning and there's better, having sex on the balcony !!!
Glion had to build appartment blocks just for them cause no "agency" would accept them in their flats ! They may not fight, burp, fart, brake shit in a bar but gez they ARE REAL PIGS AND SPOILT little shits !! Hum, sorry, I just never got a good contact with those students and I'm sure, they're not all like that, just like not every Swiss people is racist
and narrow-minded.
Next time I go to Bulle, I'll stop by !
im ex glion hahahahaha .
but it isd true, the 10 percent of them ruin it for the rest of us, just like it is the other way around I guess. be sure to stop by

I have not posted for a while but I feel compelled to reply. I am a Swiss that has been in California for 20+ years.
I also think that the anything-Swiss bashing is out of control on this forum. I am a mod on a US forum, and we just don't see our role as adding to and encouraging the trashing of any group of people. I think that if you accept to become a mod Economisto, you do have to become more neutral and try to smooth things. You can't have it both ways.
And don't tell me that it is just wit and it is funny. I have seen many of you loose your cool when your own countries are attacked.
To the OP that wants to move to California: have you been to California since 2008?
You will be amazed by the red tape, the economy in shamble, the impossibility of borrowing money, the cost associated with opening a business, the competition, the scams you will be subjected to as a business owner, the lawsuits...
I wonder if your frustration has to do with your line of business. I always found bars pretty depressing in Switzerland.
Why don't you explore other options in the hospitality industry?
