| | Re: Sundays | Quote: | | | | | Come to Ticino, basically all restaurants are open on Sunday (but closed on Monday or Tuesday)
Of course, you will need to forget this german nonsense and learn a REAL language (i.e. ITALIAN).
Tom | | | | | Just as a lot of restaurants in Zürich, like www.bauschaenzli.ch www.restaurantbuergli.ch www.by-khalid.ch www.libanesisch.ch www.churrasco.ch www.zeughauskeller.ch www.commercio.ch www.ziegelohlac.ch
and many more. Quite many of the smaller places do not have a WEBsite of course. The choice of restaurants open at Sunday noon in Zurich is considerable. And the choice on Sunday evening rather better.

I'm very noise conscience... guess I've been here too long |

There is a noise value which you are not allowed to exceed (children playing excluded).
However, I take your point and although we have a push-mower, we don't use it on Sundays |

| | Re: Sundays
What I don't like about stores being closed on Sundays is that it apparently forces everyone to do their shopping on Saturdays, which results in ridiculously crowded stores. So yes, I can see how someone would need a day dedicated to nothing but relaxing after having to deal with all the shopping madness the day before.
But more than anything, what I don't like about Sundays being a mandatory "quiet day" is that I am forced to abide by an old Christian law that, in my opinion, is no longer relevant or convenient to modern society in which it is no longer uncommon for both parents to work during the week and so the weekends are the only days that they can do their shopping and household chores.

You can't beat the distant sound of a chugging mower and the smell of freshly cut grass, on a Sunday morning, as the groundsman gives the 22yds it's final trim before the afternoon match on the village green, where you can sit in the pub forecourt, across the road, watching and supping a nice ......
.... what?.....what? ...... bloody neighbours mowers just woken me up from my reminiscing.

About 20 years ago you had a good arguing point, but today the large shops are all open at lunchtime and up to 8 or 9 pm once per week. Where I live, at 8 pm they are empty! And just what do you need to buy on Sunday anyway? There are other things to do in life than buy bits of pretty plastic, or are you from Singapore and in need of civilising?

| | Re: Sundays | Quote: | | | | | I hate it that even supermarkets are closed on sundays.. | | | | | A) exactly supermarkets have outlets in rail-stations and airports which are open on Sunday ... Migros in ZRH-airport and Zch-HB and Zch-Enge, Coop in Zch-Stadelhofen and in Winterthur-HB, Coop-Pronto in ZRH-airport
A-2) Coop also is open on Sunday in Basel-SBB-rail-station with that rail-station also having some nice other shops also open on Sunday . And the same applies to Luzern-Hauptbahnhof and Bern-Hauptbahnhof
A-3) Sadly enough, the rail-stations of Geneva-Cornavin and of Lugano are not "with the pack" up to now. In case of the Cornavin-Paquis area of Geneva my impression over the past 20 years was that the area in regard to Sunday, for reasons unknown to me, has gone back, as there were more open shopping places there in, let's say, 1980 . The shopping zone at Cointrin is nice, but a rather narrow and crowded place, and might need some decent "upgrade".
B) but in case of supermarkets in general it is NOT "even" but "exactly" supermarkets, as the trades unions are vigourously defending what they perceive as the interests of the employees there. And in this are supported by the political rightwingers

| | France and Germany
You can do all the shopping you like in France and Germany, take the train and your visa Card, and off you go.
if you insist on Switzerland, Lausanne and Yverdon are your best choice. I know a supermarket that closes at 18.30 in Yverdon on Saturdays. What a pleasure. Lausanne abound with shopping malls open on Saturdays afternoon even Bern
I also remember Zurich some 15 eyars ago, evrything closed at 11.00 am on Saturday, 'till Monday.
