| | Re: Sundays | Quote: | | | | | A-2) Coop also is open on Sunday in Basel-SBB-rail-station with that rail-station also having some nice other shops also open on Sunday . And the same applies to Luzern-Hauptbahnhof and Bern-Hauptbahnhof | | | | | Coop on a Sunday evening in Luzern Hbf is possibly the worse shopping experience possible. I think they only just managed to fit the contents of a shop in that space, leaving no room for the actual customers.
If you just want to pick up a bottle of booze, or a snack, pay a little more for the stop and shop at the other end of the station and save yourself the trauma.
There's also a little migros which isn't as crowded, but you can't get any booze to go with your sunday dinner.

Nah, it's fine. Lines can be long but they move REALLY fast because they have so many registers.
You wanna see horrible? Try the Coop in Bahnhof Stadelhofen on weekends. It's actually faster (or at minimum, far less nervewracking) to take a train to the Hauptbahhof, shop at Migros, and take a train back to Stadelhofen than to wait in line at that Coop.

| | Re: France and Germany | Quote: | | | | | You can do all the shopping you like in France and Germany, take the train and your visa Card, and off you go.
if you insist on Switzerland, Lausanne and Yverdon are your best choice. I know a supermarket that closes at 18.30 in Yverdon on Saturdays. What a pleasure. Lausanne abound with shopping malls open on Saturdays afternoon even Bern
I also remember Zurich some 15 eyars ago, evrything closed at 11.00 am on Saturday, 'till Monday. | | | | | No Sir, this is impossible. Saturday closing in Zurich NEVER was at 11 am ! It in the 60ies was 5pm and then in the 80ies became 4pm. But NEVER was before 4pm, NEVER. I strongly suggest you check up your drinking habits of Friday evening
And opening hours on Saturday now are depending on the shop, but in large shops 18.00 or 18.30 or 20.00.
There is just one enterprise which in Switzerland on Saturday closes at 11am and that is the post-office. The only city here around where shops closed on Saturday at 11am was Konstanz

If other people like to relax on a Sunday, that's fine. They don't have to go shopping, or do laundry, or do anything they don't want to do.
The problem is, why should this behavior/preference be forced on me?
Sundays can still be ''relaxing'' and ''the best day of the week'' for some of you, while for others it could mean an extra day to earn money, or to do the weekly grocery shopping, or get their car fixed.
Why does it have to be just one or the other?

I've actually met several Swiss people who would rather work the weekend and be able to actually do something on the days off.
Of course, it's very hard to get to real opinions from the average people here - there's a lot of verbal garbage to sift through though as they seem to think that parroting some propaganda is actually valid debate material.

To get more alcohol right on Sunday, either early in the morning, or toward lunchtime, is part of the planning. And COOP Stadelhofen is 25 minutes from home (20 mins travelling time)

Why does it have to be just one or the other? | | | | | To get your car fixed on Sunday admittedly may be difficult, but to do the weekly grocery shopping is no problem at all. And, if you have reserved your laundry-slot for Sunday, this is no problem either.

Or alternatively go for a sail on a lake, when it is Sunny , that is always fun. Yes Sundays can be dreary, but you have got to get out there and have a look around, drive up to Stuggart or the Black Forest great food , one of my favorite spots.

Sunday evening shopping? Try that in Geneva, then count yourself lucky!

More like, if only everything was open all the time, even on holidays like most stores in America...things would be better ... It's nice to have the option of going food shopping at 3am, just for the hell of it! Everything has a time limit in Switzerland, whether it's between openings, closings for lunch (so stupid), and the early closings in general. It's like you have to plan your whole week/life around what time certain stores are open. Imagine the stores were open longer, and on Sundays...wouldnt more people have jobs. Wouldnt people get paid more, better for the economy, better for everyone??? And how every store seems to pride themselves in freshness, what do stores like Migros and Coop do with all the left over croissants that don't get bought?? Thrown out, rather than maybe donated, or at least make them cheaper near the end of the day. Not to mention they're a rip off to begin with! I know I am ranting on here, but there are just so many opportunities this country could benefit from, but don't because they are too stubborn and go the Old fashion Swiss route that hasn't been any different since centuries

Anyway, life goes on without Sunday shopping just fine! | | | | | That Geneva in regard to weekend shopping in fact even went BACK over the past two decades to me is a bit strange. The only exception is the shopping zone at Cointrin, which a decade or two ago may have impressed, but nowadays is clearly narrow. Of course, life goes on without Sunday shopping, but having a bit of Sunday shopping in a good way available makes life much easier. I can live quite easily with Sunday shopping limited to airport and major rail-stations, but Geneva had dropped back a bit too much.
