You can still snort dope on the tram - at least I could see a couple doing this and nobody cared. Cameras everywhere, they got off at the police station trying to walk straight - I felt like Alice in wonderland.
You sure it was dope? Snorting it would be a waste of money, unless they had a little portable heater to convert the THCA into THC.

Maybe it was snuff -- which doesn't seem to be banned in the picture posted by Carlos R.

Zurich, Basel, Berne, so it can be assumed on all local transport, eating, smoking and drinking are verboten!

SBB proudly stated eating and drinking IS allowed.
At least in Zurich eating and drinking is still allowed in trams and buses.

It says on the VBZ-homepage:

Which means, more or less, that eating and drinking is allowed per se, but please be considerate of the other passengers as far as smelly and sticky things are concerned. And throw away big packaging outside the vehicle.

great example of Kantoenligeist eg decentralized Switzerland at work. Banned in Basel including stiffer fines after the first wave didn't work, permitted in Zurich...

Re: it is forbidden to eat/drink in the trams in Basel !

It's one of those rules I break regularly (especially drinking water in Summer), but I can't complain if I get done 'cos I know the rules.

I think as long as what your eating/drinking is fairly discreet and inoffensive then it tends to be let go. The OP was a little unlucky, I'd have thought a biscuit or choccy bar would have been ignored - but the old lady was in the right.

Re: it is forbidden to eat/drink in the trams in Basel !

Is this the case in Suisse Romande? If it is, I've never seen it enforced. I don't see the problem with drinking or even eating if you clean up after yourself and the bus/tram is relatively empty. I reguarly eat tuna sandwiches in the bus when I'm in a rush at lunch. I'm such a outlaw!

There's no such laws in Fribourg to my knowledge.

It's the usual crap, rules & regulations need to cater - pardon the pun - to the lowest common denominator, i.e. the chavs who can't clean up after themselves.

On my way back home yesterday, I was so hungry I bought some biscuits. I could not wait to be home, I started to eat them in the tram. A really old swiss grand -ma told me off in Swiss German and I could not understand a word of what she was saying. She kept talking in Swiss German and hopefully the guy sitting next to me translated and told me that she was not happy because it is not allowed to eat and drink in the trams in Basel !
I apologized and said that I did not know but I felt so stupid :S

If you eat your biscuits like this, then I can understand that sitting beside you could be a little irritating...

Interesting... I saw a guy the other day in the Lausanne M2 eating a tuna sandwhich and there was this man telling him that he couldn't tolerate the smell of the sandwhich, so asked him to put it back in his backpack. It was quite a polite discussion and the "eater" ended up stopping his meal.

Was that you?

Nope. Like I said, I wouldn't do it in a full bus at rush hour when I'm bumping into people, but I see no problem with quickly finishing my sandwich in a half-empty bus and minding my own business. I usually finish it so quickly that it would probably take longer for the guy to ask me and for me to put it away. If some tight-ass does get on my case about it, I'd probably just move to another part of the bus and give him the stink eye. Literally "the stink eye", since for the man it would be accompanied with the unbearable (for him) smell of tuna! Haha!

Re: it is forbidden to eat/drink in the trams in Basel !

Last time I looked in Basel, the eating and drinking ban was on BVB (Green Trams) only - the BLT (Yellow) trams still allowed it.

Cheers,
Nick
