Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

If you get caught by these numpties, look them in the eye and ask if they gave children or have family with children. Congratulate them on this then.........pause........... Now maintain the eye contact and say "would you seriously refuse a blood transfusion for your child if they were dying and could be saved?" the usual answer is that the child would be welcomed into the kingdom of Jehovah.!!! Ok now ask the question "I thought that 144 thousand witnesses will be welcomed into the kingdom?"
Yes, so if there are 7.5 million witnesses worldwide, how do you ensure your child is one of those 144,000 ??? Now wait DO NOT say anything..............

Watch the confused horror in their eyes and say "you have to excuse me, I have an appointment to donate blood"

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

Reminds me of the time in the UK when I asked the girl across the road out on a date. I knew she was a Mormon but didn't research much (internet ?, this was in the mid-80's).

So I picked her up and we walked down to the village pub. How much fun that was! I'm not going to make that mistake again.

I remember her telling me once that she wanted 12 children, so I said I didn't think she would have much trouble finding a guy who would sleep with her 12 times - but I'm not sure he would want a child every time.

Never saw her again. Boy, was she hot.

Try and stretch your mind a bit, see it from her perspective. If you believe God wants you to spread his message and that the best way to do it is door-to-door (and she obviously does believe that, else she wouldn't be out there) then why on earth wouldn't you take your son along?

I mean, if you went out to do anything else meritorious and age-appropriate - recycling, volunteering at an animal shelter, singing Christmas carols at an old folks' home - you'd take the kids, right?
Errr... I do believe in witnessing and I was brought up in a Christian home but my parents didn't drag me along when they did door-to-door work - they waited until I was of an age to decide for myself that I wanted to do it! And, having done door-to-door and open air work, the last thing I would do (if I had kids) would be to make them come with me - the abuse you can get is soul destroying... The first time I was the person who tried to start the conversation on the doorstep the owner of the house slammed the door in my face before I'd got five words out - took me weeks to recover.

There's a difference between bringing your child up to be a good witness and putting them in potentially abusive situations.

WAS hot but you blew it
Maybe just as well, 2 kids are enough for me lol

An invasion of privacy is in your own home is never a wanted thing! I got caught when I was a youngster by these folk in suits saying they had to speak with my mum and dad. Long story but dirty tactics makes it even worse !

Anyone has absolute freedom to knock on the door of your house. If they don't go away when you ask them to, then it's an invasion of privacy. Otherwise, it's just part of living in a free society.

And that's why I have this video camera at my front door with an intercom: I can see people and yell abuses at them without ever needing to open the door or them seeing me.

The fun of an apartment building is that I can even do so if the peole didn't ring MY doorbell, but somebody elses...

I was thinking along the same lines. I've had a sticker on my mailbox since I moved in, yet the amount of junkmail I get is ridiculous. Why do they bother putting them up, as they're obviously blatantly ignored?

Yes I agree with you !
But I was a young boy, dad was at work and mum was in the back garden hanging out washing and didn't hear the door knock. Imagine her surprise and fear upon walking in to find her 8 year old son being bombarded on 2 sides by complete strangers about religion !
THAT was an invasion of privacy for my folks.
For me it was confusing and it got me into trouble about speaking to strangers.
Those 2 people overstepped the line, would you agree to that one ?

Of course they overstepped the line. As does anyone who doesn't go away when you ask them. As does anyone who comes back after being asked not to. Seems pretty obvious to me.

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

If you would like the Jehovah's Witnesses to stop calling on you, you don't have to abuse them. Simply request that they add you to their 'do not call list' they put your name down and will not call on you again. I know this is the way it works in Australia and I'm assuming that it's the same here as I haven't been called on and they know where I live

In Australia they used to send two Elders around every couple of years to the addresses on the list to politely enquire if the same people still lived there. I'm guessing that it is not a problem here considering everyone's name is on their own letterbox.

I'm going to play devils advocate here. I was a Jehovah's Witness. I left when I was 25, and went door to door with my parents from the age of 5 weeks. In a way I'm thankful for what it gave me. I have conviction to voice my beliefs (even though they now differ from those of my parents) in a calm, polite manner. And the upbringing I had helped me overcome my shyness, taught me resilience and to persist in the face of adversity (or a door slammed in my face). All things that I'm extremely thankful for.

I don't think that's a very fair question. We all know the doctrine of the JW movement regarding such matters, and asking someone about how her parents would have acted in such a situation is getting a bit personal, no?

And ad hominem/irrelevant. Truth is truth and right is right irrespective of feelings. It's the old death penalty argument "how would you feel if he killed your son?!" "Bad, but it's lucky parents of murder victims don't get sentencing rights".

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

Apologies if it seems personal. The poster indicates that having to knock on doors served her well in life, and gave her qualities she might not have acquired otherwise. I understood this and agree that it would have instilled a strength of character which is truly an asset. But it did make me think, that should she have had an accident or severe illness, it could have cost her life. And as such I feel it is relevant. I will however remove said post if it is deemed unfair by nic80.

made me think about an article I read today in l'Illustré, about an amazing Swiss woman who runs clinics in the ivory Coast. She said she gets really fed up when people compare her with Mother Thérésa. She says ' I do not save souls- I save lives'.

Edit : Previous post removed.

My AOH lost a newborn baby over the JW blood issue, but I'm not going to ask her to comment on that, because she still has not gotten over it after 20 years.
