Apologies if it seems personal. The poster indicates that having to knock on doors served her well in life, and gave her qualities she might not have acquired otherwise. I understood this and agree that it would have instilled a strength of character which is truly an asset. But it did make me think, that should she have had an accident or severe illness, it could have cost her life. And as such I feel it is relevant. I will however remove said post if it is deemed unfair by nic80.

made me think about an article I read today in l'Illustré, about an amazing Swiss woman who runs clinics in the ivory Coast. She said she gets really fed up when people compare her with Mother Thérésa. She says ' I do not save souls- I save lives'.

Edit : Previous post removed.
The way my parents raised me did serve me very well in life. In fact the honesty they instilled and strength of character ended up working to their detriment. When it become clear that I didn't believe in God, I could not live a lie and I left the religion.

My parents absolutely believe that we are on the verge of armageddon. They will follow the letter of the law when it comes to their religion. So blood transfusions are not an option, their conscience will allow organ transplants (each JW can make their own decision based on their own conscience). However there are a myriad of other (expensive) options. When my mother had a serious back operation, her conscience allowed to her use a cell-saver that collected blood from the wound, cleaned it and put it back into her system. As it was a closed circuit she didn't feel bad about taking it. Luckily we didn't have an occurrence to need urgent medical attention. But I will leave it there. As with religion I believe that each person is responsible for their own beliefs and convictions wether you believe in Jehovah or the flying spaghetti monster.

Ooh, tell me more about this flying spaghetti monster ?
My mum is Catholic and my dad is protestant they could not marry in a church and were subjected to religious batterings from both sides! They vowed that my brother and I could make up our own minds when the time was right. I did, I'm atheist.
I believe more in science and technology than u do in religion.
I certainly believe in dinosaurs and would welcome the chance as previously mentioned to believe in said spaghetti monster

Brilliant link Nic80 - will have to reproduce it and keep it somewhere prominent (like the downstairs WC).

And thanks too for your excellent reply above + for not taking my comment personally. Merci.

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

Years ago, maybe 20 odd, my parents lived in a small village in Vaud. One day, my dad and I were at work, the doorbell rang. It was raining heavily. Mum answered and there were two young American men absolutely soaked, in the middle of no where. She invited them in and made them cups of tea.

The mormons had arrived. They spent a good few hours enjoying mum's hospitality etc. Promising to come back in a few days when the whole family was present.

As soon as my Dad heard about this he freaked!! And, yes, a few days later they returned. All the windows and doors of the house were closed and locked. They rang the doorbell, no answer. They even walked around the garden and peered in through the terrace doors knocking. We were hiding in the basement and could see their shiny black shoes walking past.

My mum got a slap on the wrist for letting strangers into her home!!

Funny story.

I have great respect for other peoples' religions. As long as they don't try to cram it down my neck.

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

It's about time someone tried Nil

My wife had the people from the local church come and try this a few times and they were very polite all the time she said. They didn't understand that she isn't interested since their English wasn't great. Then when I was leaving for work one day and I opened the door to one of them just about the knock on said door.

She was very polite and nice. And so was I. I was firm in insisting that my wife and I am not interested in the local church.

They stopped coming afterwards.

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

Some sects can be very persistent. Decades ago, briefly after moving into my current place, I got a big envelope from an organization called "Steueramt." I leaved through their papers and eventually sent them "Back To Sender" with a brief message added:

"To whom it may concern,

Many thanks for your interesting and informative brochures. However, I'd like to politely notify you that I am not planning to join your congregation.

Best regards,

Captain Greybeard"

Didn't help any. They still keep sending me their stuff.

Re: Someone is trying to save my soul!

Problem is WHICH light. There are literally 1000s - I am so grateful that our very mixed heritage means that we quickly realised that whichever one we chose, we would upset all the others. Very liberating. I often wonder what it would have been like to grow up in a family with ONE strong faith- I'm sure I would have got to the same conclusion, but it might have taken a lot longer.

The problem is I never met them. I got a letter with a lady's name on it but no one actually came to my door....

And once in a while I receive a flyers about Jesus, the redemption or the alike...

Ladies, it seems you did not get it. "Steueramt" is the German word for tax authority.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is only good with meatballs. Extra spicy meatballs, and special tomato sauce.

We had the Mormons round once - we lived behind their building. They had very good teeth. I said that really we weren't interested, and that we'd appreciate it if they wouldn't include us in their missionary activity. They never troubled us again.

When I was 18 (years ago) we invited the Jehovas witness in.. we were real stoned and they sat and enjoyed our "special" cookies with us... I think they must of had a spiritual revelation cause they never came back
