Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

Not wanting to divert Nils thread but on a similar theme. I get regular ,number withheld ,calls at 18h00 or thereabouts doing "surveys". I have done all sorts of things to discourage the callers, including once stopping the young lady who was convinced she could change my life, by insisting that before I answer details on my personal life, she should answer some questions about hers. I only got to the third question before she hung up! Nowadays, I just say oh yes, thats interesting please hold on, then carry on with what I am doing. Whats are others experiences or am I the donkey in this country?

I generally answer, then put the phone down whilst still connected. After half a minute or so, they've got the message.
I'm still tempted to do the "murder scene" trick some time.

Get rid of the landline, who needs one anyway?

When signing up for a mobile, they ask you if you want to be included in the directory or not, presumably you can get yourself removed if need be.

Can you have a swisscom internet connection without a landline?

Don't know about swisscom, but I would hope so. You could just unplug the phone if you're forced to subscribe.

Re: Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

There was some hoo-hah not so long ago about the Swiss government doing government based surveys over the phone and it would be an offence to refuse to do it. Will have to trawl back over previous threads to find it (I'm sure it was discussed here).

As for the general marketing surveys and calls I've had so many I have lost the will to be inventive and witty and just say, sorry, I don't have time. The poor buggers on the other end of the phone are only trying to earn a wage and it must be soul destroying to keep getting sarky or nasty comments.

I would fail miserably at that kind of work - hate cold calling.

Its actually useful for ordering stuff, for example early morning taxi recognize the number and therefore have all the details and they dont take a booking from a mobile phone.

Re: Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

I give my son (8 years-old) 1 CHF every time he manages to get them explaining what they are selling. Most of the time the ask to talk to "dad" (and say goodbye) but occasionally he ends up understanding that they intend to sell "some sort of filter" so at times it becomes the entertainment of the evening

Re: Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

I just say "No thank-you" and hang up. This is actually better for employee of the centre, as they can get on to the next mug, without wasting time.

If it turns out it was government mandated, so be it - I'll explain to the judge that imitating junk callers is a bloody stupid way to going about official business. (See also ProLitteris communications - deliberately designed, it seems, to be thrown out as junk, and thereby allow a fine to be imposed ).

Round here,if you book an early morning taxi the night before, they check the number you are calling from for the address you are giving. I guess there has been some childish abuse in the past (what a great idea , you could get revenge on those nasty neighbours we have read about so much in these threads)

Re: Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

Telemarketer: *rattles off in german*
Me: bitte????
Telemarketer: *repeats*
Me: oops, mis Düütch ist nüt guet! Langsam bitte!
Telemarketer: *slows down like she is talking to a moron*
Me: oh sorry, I really dont understand you.
Telemarketer: its ok, I speak English!
Me: (in my head: oh fuuuuuuck) I try!
Telemarketer: *asks question*
Me: eh....sprechen sie Japanisch/Mandarin/Swahili?
Telemarketer: *click*

Fun

Or another time, I simply said "ja ja ja ja ja" all the way (injected some silly giggles too) till he realised that I was taking the piss before hanging up! I mean, someone's got to make their job interesting right?

Re: Telemarketing -How do you deal with those 18h00 calls

Had quite a few of these too...

One time it was some telesales for a low-cost international calls service and it went something like this ...

Telesales guy : Hi, I am .... and would like to tell you about an interesting offer we have for you to call abroad. How many times you call abroad in a week ?
Me : Hi, well almost never.

TSG : Don't you call relatives / friends living abroad ?
Me : Not really, I am just a grumpy lonely guy living with my two cats, a one eyed-rabbit and a blue Iguana.
TSG : But you would have someone to call ?
Me : <really sad tone> Not really...
TSG : Hmm...Hmmm..Hmmm...okay, have a good day then.
Me : I will. You too.

Conversation over.

ah that's mean but made me chuckle.

I used to get really annoyed with these calls but now just use them as an occasion to practice my German.

Cold calls...my day life. Actually I enjoy doing it. But I am a high quality caller, only for very specific business/people. I have bad answers sometimes
