I think if you can get your local cable operator to remove the socket, you can't be charged. It's whether the landlord will alow you to do so.
You mean you didn't check beforehand? That's mightily oversightful of you DB

So we just got an invoice for nearly 400 CHF to cover our share of the building's annual cable television bill.
We don't watch telly. We have no intention of watching telly. But it's a shared charge, and it would be churlish (illegal, even?) to refuse.
Has anyone else had similar surprise additions to their nebenkosten (additional house charges) after moving into their new place?
I get billed for shared lift/elevator costs. Just under 200CHf annually.
Only there is no lift on our part of the apartment. The only way up is stairs for us. I really should complain, had forgotten all about it until this thread.

Don't know who the cable supplier is, but you could ask your Vermieter to have your TV-cable connection sealed, aka "plombieren" (all very officially via Cablecom or whoever).

We get local tv channel that I am hooked on and it is available only on cable. It's about local restos, communities, clubs, culture, services, I love it. They do it super locally, I recognize some people everytime I watch it. Then you talk to neighbors or colleagues, and mention you saw some program on local vineyards, special local dish, art group or projected construction and you have friends for life. Makes living in a new community so much more enjoyable and fun.

I don't think this is true. We had this in our first building. We had the Cable box so paid anyway, but had to pay for the building's Cablecom.
DB, if you keep PMing me about the intricacies of what happened on Big Brother last night I'm going to have to disable my PMs. TIA.

Check your lease....maybe the basic cable is included in the NK but if not this should have been transparent from the start. Having the plugs sealed may not be the solution. It depends on how the cable is set up. But worth a try. I am sure you can find better ways to spend 400 chf.

Our landlord received a similar bill from Cablecom. He then asked if we used cablecom (TV, Internet etc). If we said yes then an extra CHF 30 a month would be charged to our rent going forward. If no, they would come and seal the sockets up. Personally I decided to cancel Cablecom as if you add it up, I was paying (including the charge to Billag) CHF 125 a month for basic TV and standard Internet (20 Mbit).
