For every person who actually makes money in a bank you'll have an army of people behind them:
Building management

Software - in countless different forms
Product Control
Financial Control
Risk Control
Internal Audit
External Audit
HR
Legal and Compliance
Business Support
Offshoring
Security

| | Re: What has the banker become? | Quote: | | | | | .... In nomal daily life, should the bank be in such a position to
- not fail
- to pay its employees that kind of life style
- charge the fees and rates that it does
- have such power (political and social)
.... | | | | | I am completly opposed to the "too big to fail". By bailing out banks it simply encourages them to continue to get into the very things that caused them problems in the first place which could be summed up to say they took too much risk, even to the level it was absurd. If any other business were to make such dumb mistakes everyone would say they deserve to be out of business (all the risk models have been around for a long time show the banks doing dumb things). And if indeed it was so big that it would cause economic collapse well then it should be forced to be broken up into smaller regional banks or something.
I also think banks should not have such power. I don't know how it is in switzerland but in the US there are so many ties between the big old banks in the federal reserve and the government it is sickening yet 95% of the public don't know what the federal reserve is or much about the banking system at all.
As far as the bonuses, fees, etc... well if they can afford to pay bonuses why not let them? At least if a bank is giving bankers bonuses its better then some corporations where only the CEO etc rake in the money. I would rather see a larger group get a 5 or 6 figure bonuses and spend their money on swiss watches than the corporations where only one person or a few people get multi-million.
With fees, in theory, you should just be able to shop around and find a bank with lower. (I said in theory since the article I just read is saying the banks are just hiding the fees http://redtape.msnbc.com/2011/04/stu...rting-law.html)

My salary is ok in a rather dull sector of IT. I deserve every Franc. People who get paid less than me are obviously stupid and lazy. People who get paid more than me are obviously overpaid leeches on society and don't provide value for money.

It's got to be jealousy. | | | | | IT staff in banks are bankers/in finance too Eco |

| | Re: What has the banker become?
since nobody can answer my question i will just do it myself to start.
those nice people down at your local post finance/kantonalbank/ubs/cs branch who take your deposits and approve your home mortagages? NOT BANKERS.
going in and out of those posh offices at J Safra/UBP/UBS or CS on paradeplatz? NOT BANKERS. (they're private wealth managers).
BANKERS = investment bank employees whose primary function is to help sell companies either via IPO, merger or acquisition.
Investment banks also have a number of other functions, like sales & trading, market research, prime brokerage, and asset management (usually through subsidiaries) but those are usually not core functions.
Bankers are highly compensated mostly because they work crushingly long hours. On an hourly basis you will find that they do not earn much more than say, a plumber. Also the industry is super competitive and attracts top talent who demand top level pay.
