Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

People who run into kids are just either mentally disturbed or it is accidental- I can't think of any other reason. I probably would have chased the guy once I had checked that there was no serious damage to my child., and confronted him- but then you are pregnant. However I would like to point out that this is not my experience of how Swiss are towards children. There are always racists but when my children were little in each place I lived the whole neighborhood would watch and guard the children.

they wanted the toys outside cleared away at night, but that was it.

It's part of the Swiss passive-aggressive behaviour. If they had time they'd slap post-it notes on your kid's forehead saying "stay at home, get out of my way, ANON" but they don't so they kick the push chair, shout at them etc.

In many other countries they'd get thumped for this behaviour, but not here so loads of old people act aggressive. Similar in Germany (famous story of a 60-ish year old pushing someone looking foreign onto the ubahn tracks a couple of years ago) but not as bad as here, on average.

Having said that, I think I prefer passive aggressive behaviour, as I prefer to be shouted at and have random notes stuck around, than to be stabbed. Luckily, I've not offended anyone yet, probably because in London I'd be afraid of the stabbing thing.
This is a good post. Though I don't prefer passive aggressive. I have lived in violent, stabbing places, actually Chicago can be wild, NY. You can easily avoid bad neighborhoods, though, and you are left with some warmest, most fun people. Back home, we deal with massive, chronic and omnipresent stealth. Pickpocketing, robberies, etc. I think makes people less hang onto possession. Here people hang onto their pricey stuff so much. I think I prefer the pickpocketing danger, you outsmart the pickpockets by not giving them chance, than to be pummeled down by nicely dressed corporates and retirees (hard to expect them to behave like neanderthals), though, or have my child constantly whacked by shopping bags, her feet ran over by shopping carts, being knocked down, baby carriage whacked around. It is not frequent, but often enough, once a week or so.

Yep, you are right. I prefer to be somewhere when you know where violence comes from than never know in which way it will hit you. And usually the weaker ones are the most often the victims while in other places it is those who don't mind their own business...

I am done! Blanket is finished, stuff are clean, bag is ready, diapers are out, I am fully prepared! Nice work by the way!
Windows clean? All the blinds?
Refrigerator and oven clean?
What about the back of the cupboards?
Behind the TV? Under the bed?

Nil, believe me, your explanation did not make things better.
Olygirl, you are an uptight shopping bag at the best of times and you are getting old. It shows. I wouldn't be as cruel to say you'll never understand until you have kids but you provoke the worst out of those of us who took that responsibilty and can't hold it in when something like this happens. There are no excuses. How many times?

Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

Perhas this is why many Swiss leave their kids at home when they go out?

I just don't get it- I have seen little kids walk to school alone through the Zurich streets, schoolpacks on their backs. because people believe that it is safe for kids. I hope it wasn't a racist attack- that would be so sick!

That's exactly what I was thinking... and isn't it ironic how a member here can't even consider that?

Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

Maybe the passivity towards agressivity is a problem here. Many people don't say anything, shake their heads and move on and the agressives don't get called out on their stupid behaviour and feel like they can get away with anything. Although I must say that I almost never bump into people here, maybe it's because everyone is so slow you have minutes to look eachother in the eye and figure out which way to pass. But of course I get the odd granny elbow in the back or queue-jumpers. The rudeness described in this thread against children is very sad, and that no one in the vicinity helped/gave an understanding word even more so. I think it's absolutely fine to shout in the general direction of this idiot even if he couldn't care less. So watch out and take care

Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

Ahhh the Swiss motto "kids in their place" - I reckon you should find out what cafe he eats at and then take your kids (plus a few of their friends) there for lunch and let them have fun

I have 2 tots and come across this all of the time, at first I was reacting all macho but lets be honest this isnt the right thing to be teaching ur kids so now I have toned it down but for sure make them know that you are not happy public displays of emotion work very well in Switz

Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

well Im 2 meters tall and have walked into kids on several occasions.
Not on purpose but I simply do not see them and will walk straight into them knocking them on the ground.

I will however always pick up the kid and apologize to whomever is with them.
Then again while I walk I am not paying attention to anything and will walk into cars and door frames all the time. I simply do not see them

but if I was with as a father of the kid I would have gone after him , no matter what the consequences......

Re: Strangers hitting [walking straight into] your kids

It is just no excuse to hit a kid.

Of course someone can walk into a kid and you can see it right away when that person didn't see the kid because the person will help, show empathy, feel sorry, apologise, etc...

But in this situation I believe 1- the guy saw her, 2- he didn't apologise or even felt sorry but shout at her instead.

A 2 year old for God's sake! It doesn't matter if I wouldn't have been close to her, I wouldn't tell her to be careful, or if I would have dance the chicken dance on one leg while holding an umbrella. It is no excuse to knock down a child and keep walking like nothing happened.

If he didn't do it on purpose, the reaction he had (or lack to have) after didn't convince me that he was innocent.

To some it's just you making a drama, Olygirl is one of those who probably would stand there staring if she was nearby but do nothing about it... some people are like that.

No, I wouldn't. You don't want some weirdo to follow you back to your house or harass you.
