I had a similar incident last week actually, and our building has no wash plan.

I found my washing in one big wet pile on top of the machine (I was probably only 5 minutes late) when I went down and my neighbour had begun a 1.5hours wash cycle. I was livid, went to knock on her door but for the sake of neighbourly relations, simply told her to inform me when she was done.

Obviously, 1.5hours later, she didnt AND STARTED ANOTHER 1.5hours cycle with her first load in the dryer. Seriously, sod the environment. There will be less neighbourly spats and world peace if we all had our own washer/dryers in our apartments.
I suggest it is time to start practicing the piano again. Especially if she is being late with her washing.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

I completely understand!

We have wash days as well, and as I live alone and only do my laundry every two weeks I informed a neighbour so that she could use the empty day on occasion.

Alas no good deed goes unpunished, the last time both!! machines were running, no note no nothing and it was not the nice neighbour but another person altogether.

So I emptied the half done laundry onto the floor and put my stuff in as well as informed the concierge. Never any trouble since! (However I am avoided in the halls as get spam in my mailbox from the neighbours, which I return in kind).

Passive aggressive wars, why can't they just communicate here?

I might actually buy one! We aren't allowed our own.... but could always hide it under the bed if the Landlord came round..

Re: I hate laundry rooms

Does anyone know why this weird practice or shared laundry facilities started? I have lived in loads of countries and Switzerland is the only place that I came across this.

When we had shared facilities (third floor, no lift ...) I too hated laundry rooms! We even took our washing machine with us when we moved from France but were unable to have it plumbed in.

Also, slightly off topic, but more often than not Swiss kitchens and bathrooms are usually very basic - again, anyone know why?

Re: I hate laundry rooms

I seriously feel bad for all these situations, it must be really tough.

I don't like the place I live, but luckily there are zero rules about washing/drying. Spend a good sunday with 3 machines to my disposal. Everytime I am convinced that I need to move to a nicer place, this is a big motivation to stay.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

The aggravation caused by disputes in the communal laundry rooms is an age old problem. Almost everyone I know who shares a laundry room has some complaint or another. Sharing laundry is the one thing I try to spare my clients from. But lately most of my clients ask to have their own washer/dryer and are willing to pay more rent for this. The reality is that this is just not always possible. I prefer buildings with washplans, rather than no plan or a sign up sheet. A washplan brings order to the laundry room chaos. Contrary to what many think, it is possible to swap with a neighbour sometimes. It is a question of give and take but it makes for good neighbours.

If there is no plan, what is of interest to me is how many apartments share the machines and how many drying rooms there are and whether they are fitted with wall dryers (secomats). It takes longer to drip dry clothes and you cannot clear the lines for the next person if your clothes are wet. The wall dryers work quickly and also dehumidify the room.

When clients have had problems, if there is a hauswart I defer the matter to them but so many buildings have no one on site. Still, it is worth complaning to management, they will act if the person is a repeat offender.

One point of clarification. You say you wrote your name on the board to reserve it 8:30-11:00. Went down at 8:00, found that it was due to finish at 8:40. So you went down at 8:45, and found the machine in use, and another name on the board.

So, did he erase your name and write his own name in?
No. He totally ignored my time. The board basically has all our names on it and we just add the time. Although i did find that my reservation had magically dissappeared before

He`ll be back, as the saying goes . . . I think he`s probably pissed because he was found out . . . sneaky ba***rd.
Seriously, this is one of those stupid things that could escalate and if I would you I would go around and speak to him (take OH of course . . we men are so full of ourselves. . .).
I would tell him that you checked the rota and there was definitely no other name on it.
You have your rights and a visit would let him know that you are not going to be walked over. Try to sort it out there, be firm but just try to come to the agreement that it was a misunderstanding and move on.
However he does need to know that:
a) You are not stupid
and b) He is not the boss around there.
I did (actually OH did) and he just left refusing to discuss anything. I checked and he already added his next reservation. I will surely stay away from the laundry room then!

Actually, that is only part A of my story.

I went back 3 hours later and managed to catch her in the laundry room. We activate all the machines by using individual cards and she offered to let me wash in tandem on her card, even her last load was in the dryer. Like, GEE THANKS BUT IF YOU REMEMBER, I WAS ACTUALLY HERE FIRST?!

But I just clenched my teeth, smiled and took up the offer using the washing machine on her card and proceeded to use the dryer switching back to my card when her load was done. Went a step further by deploying the "kill them with niceness" tactic by folding her clothes that were done in the dryer neatly and left them on top of the machine.

Worked. I got a knock on my door an hour later - it was her with a sheepish thank you ("you shouldnt have!!!") and bottle of red wine. Talk about neighbourly relations eh!

Re: I hate laundry rooms

We have a fixed schedule posted right beside the washing machine...once a week per family. Then there were newcomers who did their laundry on our timeslot. I waited for their laundry to be done, took their key and hang it on the nail where the schedule is. I guess they didnt know since the landlord was out of town that week. They just had to skip the dryer and then lousily hang their clothes and left no space for us. I had to take care of that as well. Thongs and all...

Yes, our communal laundry room is all full of shitty messages permanently, with arrows and all sorts.

I have also seen the shitty anonymous messages pasted up in the elevator about other stuff.

Am pleased that I will be going back home to Norfolk PERMANENTLY the end of June....
You make it sound as if that's a good thing

Well at least he is doing it correctly now. He was just trying it on and hoping that he would get away with it - which he did but not without being found out.
Leave it at that for now - HE knows that he was wrong and YOU know that he was wrong too . . . and HE knows that YOU know . . er er er (not that song again).
Anyway, the important thing is that you are on the moral high ground and therefore you should continue being friendly until next time (if it happens).
Hopefully at the very least he will be wary of trying to steal your spot again.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

First place I lived in had a "sign up" card with time slots. The evening slot starting at 5pm.

I would never be home by then - but hoped that at 1800 I could do 2 loads before it became too late/noisey.

One woman used to put her stuff in and block my time.

I asked her nicely not to do that because I was working - no luck.
I asked her again nicely - no luck!
I dumped her washing in a basket - no luck!
I dumped her washing on the floor - and then wrote my name over every single one of her washing slots - that worked!

I moved out shortly afterwards - and into a place where the people on the ground floor would complain about the (communal basement) washing machine being used on a Saturday morning - because they liked a lie in.

They went down and turned it off a couple of times. We then replied by doing our washing as early as the house rules allowed - and taping a copy of the rules to the machine - highlighting the Saturday time.

For people like her, you really need to say at the beginning, "OK, we can do this the easy way, or we can do it the hard way - you choose."
