| | Re: I hate laundry rooms | Quote: | | | | | Does anyone know why this weird practice or shared laundry facilities started? | | | | | I grew up this way in commie times, but while we had individual washers later on at home, there was a giant communal one in the washer/dryer room in the basement. And Mandel. I don't know how to call that, the giant steam press for sheets and tshirts, I loved it. I think people exposed to that tend to iron absolutely everything
There are a lot of similarities the way things used ot be when I was a kid, and here. Early streaming, bunch of other stuff. It's aggravating, but nicely familiar, too.

Shared laundry rooms are very common in Sweden as well and of course a source of many, many neighbourly disputes. Mostly about taking someone else's slot and not cleaning the fluff from tumble dryer filter. The arguments mostly take place by leaving loads of passive-agressive notes in the tvättstuga (washing hut, as it's called ). Of course you would always sign them with "Neighbour", if anything. Like this:
Hm now thinking about it, maybe those people who think Sweden and switzerland is the same place are not that wrong after all.

The slots are 07.00-12.00 12.00-17.00 17.00-22.00 and this 7 days per week, Christmas and Easter included.

Can't beat them, join them! | | | | | The general way is carefully to put the stuff aside, onto a clean place. And here, Swiss, Portuguese, Kosovari, Indian and Armenian folks adhere to this rule |

| | Re: I hate laundry rooms | Quote: | | | | | Our building has a communal laundry room (washing machine and dryer). You reserve it by writing your name on a board with the date and time to use it. So yesterday i booked it for today, from 830 to 1130.
I took my laundry up at 8 but the machine was in use. Thats fine. No name was on the board but the programe was supposed to finish until 840. 10 minutes into my time but no big deal. So i go up at 845 and a new load is in plus a name on the board. The idiot didnt even look that i had reserved the machine. Im extremely pissed off because i really need to do some washing today.
Their load finishes in an hour. Im using that machine then no matter what! | | | | | you've only got yourself to blame! it finishes at 840 and you arrive at 845?!
rookie mistake...

| | Re: I hate laundry rooms | Quote: | | | | | Does anyone know why this weird practice or shared laundry facilities started? I have lived in loads of countries and Switzerland is the only place that I came across this.
When we had shared facilities (third floor, no lift ...) I too hated laundry rooms! We even took our washing machine with us when we moved from France but were unable to have it plumbed in.
Also, slightly off topic, but more often than not Swiss kitchens and bathrooms are usually very basic - again, anyone know why? | | | | | This "weird practice" started when the first washing machines
were introduced. And proved to be an effective method in view of the narrow spaces available.
Kitchens and bathrooms very often ARE rather basic in case of apartments with a low monthly renting price. Should be better in case of expensive apartments

the first i had experienced this was in Chicago. i was a bit surprised given that it was in quite an expensive flat in a central location.
but i really liked the idea! save space in the flat and have much better utilisation of the machines.
of course, in the communal flats there, there wasn't just a single machine, but about 4 washers and 4 dryers.
i would love to see these in dense places like hong kong. where you have hundreds of families in a block. you could have a huge laundry room and also put a cafe next to it. would be fun!

Also, in my experience, it is not only the cheaper apartments that have basic kitchen and bathrooms.

And why should a system which is good and efficient and space saving be replaced ?
Back to the washing machine. The house-manager (Hausabwart) in the house where I lived between 2002 and 2009 was very proud of "his" modern washing-machine.
Expensive apartments with meagre kitches and bathrooms ? Many of the expensive apartments are owned by thrifty owners. This is the secret behind this.

And people co-operate quite nicely, in spite of the different languagues used by some 10 nationalities. You use mainly German, English and Italian, AND a portion of tolerance and humour. | This user would like to thank Wollishofener for this useful post: | |

| | Re: I hate laundry rooms | Quote: | | | | | You took the word out of my mouth Cosmicgirl!! | | | | | P.... is a rough word for something making living in this densely populated country really possible, and that is the combination of co-operation, respecting rules, efficiency and flexibility.
I remember my schooltime, when our mothers when the weather was dry and they had their washing-term did hang up the laundry outside and of course all day long had a look outside to be early enough to "rescue" the laundry in case the weather turned.
