If you include the Alps which make up more than 50% of the territory, it may not be dramatic, but if you realize this, you see that it is the most densely populated country in Europe. The same if you take Germany as a whole it may not look dramatic, but if you realize that most of Germany takes place in the "Hamburg-Basel-Korridor" you realize where the German problem is. Similar to Italy. While areas like Calabria, Apulia and the Basilicata are rather empty, Emilia Romagna and Lombardia ARE densely populated. While countries like France and Britain are empty .
even if you look at individual cities and towns in switzerland, they are not densely populated.

no no, they just only grow increasingly together.

and if you take national statistics, or watch aerial photos, you have it

To me, the simplest solution would be that there is one key for the washing room, with a fixed rota and you pass on the key to each other at the proper time. Surely you can manage one fixed appointment in a week given how it would reduce your stress levels? A lot of the laundry room problems are due to infarctions that nobody owns up to, if it's absolutely clear who was in the room at what time and nobody else could enter, such discussions would become obsolete. If someone proves to be unable to follow protocol, then they can be addressed directly rather than having an array of passive aggressive notes that nobody feels concerned by.
When we first moved here we moved into an OLD building with this system. No problem, right? I got 1 day every 10 days. Sometimes the room was STILL taken on my day ... there was an older woman who felt she was privlidged to wash anytime she wished despite the fixed rota because she'd been living there for about 30 years ... we moved

How did she get in without the key? I bet she had a duplicate made on the sly. I see that I'll have to make my plans for world wash room domination absolutely idiot proof...

Re: I hate laundry rooms

What always shocks me is how people have enough clothes to last 2 weeks between their washing rotas. No wonder Switzerland has such huge eff-off wardrobes.
We have our own washer and dryer and my wife we do washes almost every other day.

They don't wash them. They hang them on those hangers on their balconies to air and then put them back in the cupboard.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

In Basel we had a washing machine and tumbler in the apartment. Since we came to ZH we have to share the laundry room with the peasants.

Between 15 apartments there is one washing machine, a tumbler and a drying cupboard - people write in to a calendar when they want to wash.

Most people book a few hours in the week - one neighbour (the one with the 2 teenagers I have written about in other posts) books the room for an average of 13 hours per week. One of these days I am going to hold an apéro for the neighbours and give a prize for most hours using the laundry room.

Cheers,
Nick

Please don't tell me that you store all the hours in an excel-sheet and do statistical analysis on it.

This would be quite a new concept !

But unlikely with the weather in Switzerland

You however can do an emergency "lavabo-wash" in between and then
hang the stuff up. You can buy special lavabo-washing-fluids exactly
for this purpose

What, they really sell washing liquid for hand-washing clothes?

I always wondered what people did when the label said hand-wash only.

I've lived in several places in CH, with every kind of washing scheme. The one I like best is the current one- two washing machines, absolutely no schedule. Somehow I always get to do my laundry when I want, and the space is kept fairly clean. I don't mind sharing the machine, I just do my 95 or 60 degree load first and then it's sanitized. Having a personal machine is cool, but with the housing crisis it's something that I've learned to live without.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

No laundry problems in our block, I think there's only 5/6 flats for 2 washing machines and dryers, guess some of us are lucky. I've heard so many stories of laundry woes that if I ever move, checking laundry services would be high up on the list, just after making sure to have super solid walls and floors.

Re: I hate laundry rooms

We are soon leaving the country. If someone is looking for an appartment in Baselland WITH Washing machine and tumbler inside the appartment....

I am so happy about it. Our first appartment was with shared ones and it was a nightmare at the moment we got 3 guys moving in. They made a huge mess in the washing room, let their wet clothes all night in the machine (very stinky) and too often I walk in clothes hanging all over the places, underwear all around, etc. They were dirty, irrespectful and didn't care for anyone. (And they were NOT foreigners).

Re: I hate laundry rooms

The laundry is always on our househunt checklist regardless of country. We have 3 small children, so a shared laundry or 2 flights of stairs to get to the laundry was out of the question. We settled on a place that has the laundry in the basement and we live on level 2, but there is an elevator, which made it acceptable.

I do love the drying room concept - we don't have a tumble drier, just an indoor clothesline with a big blower thing (anyone know the right name for this?)

Re: I hate laundry rooms

My last apartment had a shared laundry room for 8 apartments, and there wasn't any major disaster there in 5+ years we were there, but it was always a major pain to jockey with the neighbors to get a time-slot to do wash. We're a active family of 4, and if we don't get a wash time in a few days the smelly, wet clothes pile up and things get nasty Shared washing machines are fine for college dorms, military, hotels, etc, but I'm a 40 year old guy and the communal life thing is getting old.

Our new apartment has it's own washer and I love it. Fist thing I did was make up a time schedule and wrote my own f-kng name across the whole f-kng thing I still love to ask my wife if she can go check when the washing machine is free next ...actually, I'm still kind of expecting to see a neighbor come walking out of there carrying a basket of wash

Our Swiss friends loved having their own washing machine in the kitchen of their flat without any washing rules when they lived in London. They would put on a wash after getting in from a night out just because they could, even when it wasn't a full load

Re: I hate laundry rooms

Yep, the hassle of the shared laundry is one of those little details in life that I have never quite adapted to here. What I particularly dislike is the where many buildings have the no laundry on Sunday rule even if the machines are buried down in the cellar under an office / shop / where no one can hear them anyway. Also for the rents paid the machines to flat ratio is often pretty weak. One smallish machine for 12 households? Meh....especially when the tiny flats of friends living in London alway manage to have a washer squeezed into the flat somewhere. The best laundry arrangements I've seen here is to have a healthy contingent of foreigners who are willing to ignore the 10pm / sunday limitations, and no calendar, or booking is only optional.

The lack of in-flat options is a little odd, yep places are small here but you can have one of these little machines taking up less than half a sq metre of floorspace:
http://essex.gumtree.com/essex/79/72503479.html
Had one back home, worked fine. I don't do laundry that often myself, but having pretty long work hours and having a lot on in my social life I prefer to wash when I want like an adult, rather than when someone else thinks I ought to.
Remember folks, the world's only truly non-renewable resource is time
