But is he really Swiss, because he seems to display a mastery of our slang and colloquialisms for what was a relatively short stay

Possibly Newcastle ?

Pretty sure it's Newcastle.

Newcastle, right?

Definitely Newcastle.

That just the result of Newcastle Brown Ale stains.

Seriously, I started to reply before reading the last paragraph so declare myself a genius and you a fine judge of human nature.

That bit about the queen is bollocks though .

Re: Why England has got nothing on Switzerland!

I loved the hovercraft service back in the day. And the food in those days was pretty one dimensional... and coming from San Francisco, I am a bit of a foodie.

Today, I count London among the top food cities of the world. So yes, things have changed immensely, at least in London.

Have things changed?

(other than there no longer being a hovercraft service to Calais)

Re: Why England has got nothing on Switzerland!

There are many Michelin stars dotted around the UK now. But the best British food is still traditional and home-cooked. Seems like our Swiss 'friend' was not invited to many homes and didn't explore much, sadly.

Full Michelin-starred restaurant listing

One-Michelin-star restaurants in England
One-Michelin-star restaurants in London
One-Michelin-star restaurants in Scotland, Wales and Ireland
Two-Michelin-star restaurants

Three-Michelin-star restaurants (No new 2011 additions)

Alain Ducasse at The Dorcester, Mayfair
The Fat Duck, Bray, Berkshire
Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Royal Hospital Road, London
The Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire

2011 Rising stars

One-Michelin-star
Artichoke, Old Amersham (New 2011)
Castle Terrace, Edinburgh (New 2011)
The Marquis, Alkham, Kent

The Black Swan, Oldstead

Forget the chichi stuff though - give me a 24+ days hung rib of beef with Yorkshires and horseraddish- arrghh.

And let's not forget the cheap ethnic foods/restaurants. One of the things I love about London now are the curries, chinese/korean/pan asian offerings. Much like San Francisco in this way... except NO good Mexican!

Re: Why England has got nothing on Switzerland!

So Swisscheese, did you have problems with intergrating??

I think it is very hard for someone to be objective when comparing one's home country with another one.

As someone who is from neither country but has lived in both, (amongst several others) I find it hard to say whether I perfer the UK or Switzerland. Both have things that I really enjoy, including beautiful countryside and ease of being able to pursue both work and hobbies. And both have little things that I am not so keen on. I think the bottom line is that any country, with its familiarities and differences, is what you choose to make of it. I'm happy.

Slang and colloquialisms are to be learnt during the second months of your stay The third month then is the one when you have to work to improve and to cure some particulars. When you back home take a Cambridge course or two to further improve, it is quite useful. And if you get taught some bits of Texan by your relative 3 years later, it will widen your linguistic horizon of the English language.

Somehow you remind me of the Nazis.
Sorry, but may I ask you to abstain from comparisons with the Nazis ? Thanks ! In none of the posts above is anything even distantly close to the Nazi ideology.

Oh yes and the swiss coppers really respond don't they or is that only on Blocher's orders?
Blocher, just to keep you updated, no longer is Justice Minister. This job now is in the hands of Mrs Simonetta Sommaruga ! The policemen here will check up your house-entrance and your apartment-entrance, file a report, get back to HQ . Not so much of a difference really. BUT the commands do not come from Mrs Sommaruga eighter as police is a matter of the cantons, so that the commands come from the Cantonal Police & Army Minister in charge In case, your remark is to be understood as a joke, it is a terribly lame one

Where else would fish and chips be better? It's a British meal
"Chips" in the way it is used by the Brits in reality is POMMES FRITES and so is BELGIAN. But the combination "Fish & Chips" of course most definitely is a British meal.

Sorry Wolli, but chips are not Pommes Frites. The French (and Belgian) type are thin and crispy, true chips are thick, a bit soggy and fried in beef dripping and are also perfect served with "scraps" (for those kids like what I was who couldn't afford a fish - or could, but preferred a bottle of cider)
