Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

Well, I always regarded circus as something between entertainment and art. Isn't this part of childhood? Like going to puppet theatre for instance. (ahm, keep in mind I'm 32 so I might be behind the times in this regard)
Anyway, I remember that I wasn't a big fan of animal shows, I rather preferred acrobats, trapeze acts, jugglers etc etc. I know for sure that as a child I was under the influence of an excellent children book from back home - "Fram, the polar bear" which was the story of a happy circus bear that at some point in his "career" started longing for a life of a "normal" bear and live where he belonged... Very touching, probably that's why all the animals seemed a bit sad to me.
But, animals are part of the circus art..whether that is good or not, it is an entire different discussion. Perhaps circus as a whole should cease to exist ?

No, Cirque du Soleil and others are the proof of this- the Circus can thrive without animals.

The thing is, a man riding a stupidly small bike with a silly hat on his head isn't particularly amusing.

But get a bear to do it - and bingo!!! Fun for all the family!

Bears as much relationship to modern training methods in Europe as a bucking bronco in a rodeo does to modern horse training methods.

Meanwhile, in the UK, John Bryant who thinks keeping animals as pets should be illegal, is standing as a candidate for the RSPCA ruling council.

Some of these animal rightists seem to have lost touch with reality.

I haven't been to the circus for years and years. The last time I went to a 'proper' circus with animals was in about 1980/81 when we went to the last ever circus at Belle Vue in Manchester.
As good as they are at the 'Cirque du Soleil' etc I wouldn't go to a performance by them as I find it gets very boring after a while. It's the variety of the acts that makes a circus fun to watch in my opinion.

For some reason I've missed them when I was living in another country where they were touring...heard so many good things about this company.

If it was that much fun- why didn't you go in the past 36 years, or taken your child to watch?

But at the end of the day, if you don't find a circus with animals any fun... don't ever bother to go again- that's fine.

elephants from obtained from already broken elephants can have less brutal breaking-in, but ultimately, the mother or other ancestor endured this procedure.

Belgianmum said 1980/981 -- so that's 34-35 years. At this age, it's important to hang on to every year you can...

I think you missed the point. BM said that she finds the idea of Cirque du Soleil-type circuses not as much fun as traditional circuses. Me too, and I've been to several Cirque du Soleil productions.

I went to that one too Belgianmum. Did you go to the last night? Really, really emotional evening, standing ovation at the end and lots of tears being shed.

I agree that Cirque du Soleil and other such shows aren't as interesting. I also find their presentation lacking, while the actual acts are good they come across to me as souless, people simply performing, but not necessarily enjoying doing so.

Contrast that to a rainy autumn evening I spent at Circus Medrano in Oslo. Only about 2-3 dozen people in the audience scattered around the ring so looked pretty empty, but the people there were enthusiastic and applauded the first act madly. So the ringmaster invited everyone to come down and take up seats around the ringside, despite the fact they hadn't paid the extra price for them. Needless to say the show only got better as the evening went on, the performers responding to the audience's enthusiasm and the audience rewarding them with applause and cheers. One of the best nights' entertainment I've ever had in my life.

Cirque du Soleil has recently been sold by the way - to an investment group.

Well that's alright then. So long as you dont have to witness the beatings of the captive animals, the show can go on.

Modern circusses do NOT resort to beatings of their animals, but animate them with what you might call "bribes" .... but quite many animals love the Job and enjoy the Show themselves.

http://www.srf.ch/play/tv/me_schonve...3-84adbb981426

As both Fredy Knie Senior and Rolf Knie Senior always explained, the Whips are NOT used to beat the animals but to give commands by Sound and gestures. Rolf Knie, a part time school-mate of Mum had it that only primitive People in circusses were beating their animals .... and that in the late 1920ies early 30ies already. ----- the two Boys, thanks to the schooling by ambitious private teachers were three years ahead of others but had to get through the normal School System of Schaffhausen in some winter season. Where they with their charm were the stars of the class, and admired by the girls

Well, the decision has been made- after the recent death of 3 female elephants last month- Knie has decided to retire the others to their zoo in Rapperswill and not use the elephants in the circus acts.

Personally, I am really pleased for the elephants and hope they enjoy their well deserved retirement.

They died of old age (they were in their fifties: good innings for an elephant). One had cancer of the uterus, another had kidney problems.

They weren't on the road - they died at home in Rapperswil.

Set free at last! RIP Ellies! And whilst they still have other performing prisoners, I guess I must appluad their decission to not have highly intelligent, roaming animals locked up for humanities pleasure.
