They died of old age (they were in their fifties: good innings for an elephant). One had cancer of the uterus, another had kidney problems.

They weren't on the road - they died at home in Rapperswil.

Sure, and as NZZ reported
http://www.nzz.ch/zuerich/region/der...ion-1.18593972
Knie wants to improve its breeding program, and the ZOO in Rapperswil, and so has to change priorities

Will be sad to see them go, but they're going to be part of a European breeding programme to help the species.

Go to the trendy cool bars in Geneva on a Saturday night...plenty of European breeding programmes going on!

Sigh, why the groan?

I know you seem to have to groan everyone for everything, and normally I just laugh your Aspergers personality off, as I really like Aspergers people. But today I don't see why being nice to elephants needed a groan.

So come on. Calling you out St2lemans, explain yourself. Don't just groan and hide.

Indeed, and Knie say the recent high temperatures aggravated the situation.
Knie made the decision themselves- and are to be congratulated on this. And we also have to repeat, again and again, that the Knie elephants were by far the best looked after and loved elephants in any circus in the whole wide world. I was about 5 when I first saw them coming out of the train in my native village, in the mid 50s- and walk holding tails to the large square on the outskirts were the circus was held. I loved it- and yet, even at 5, I cried during the performance because I wanted them to be free. Young children often sense things that as adult we may lose the ability to feel.

As said, well done Knie and happy retirement- I think I will go to Rapperswill this autumn and say hello to them and pay my respects.

They may well be. However, Knie have Indian elephants not African ones.

Asian, darling, asian!!

So i canny see them walking down to Plainpalais..?!

Knie is known all over the World for looking after their animals better probably than they look after themselves. The horse show is mesmerising.

They were going to do a free day where you could go and meet an elephant up close and personal. I was going to go. i may have to google.

Probably end up with a llama. Spitting at me. Knowing my luck!!!

Were always called Indian when and where I grew up. Same as Native Americans were always Indians.

India also has the largest population of elephants.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_elephant

Indian, Asia, whatever - they ain't African elephants.

Sigh, I don't care if they sleep on straw of gold and drink llama milk, what I object to is that humanity thinks their need to gawp at majestic animals outweighs the animals need of freedom and a natural life.

Seriously st2, if you groan this.........

Indian elephants are a sub-species of the Asian elephant.

Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

Here's a video of a circus elephant trampling its trainer to death in Hawaii. And then getting shot by police. Elephants and circuses don't mix. This is a good move by Knie.

Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

Yeah, cos that's an awesome and comparison right there.

I watch lots of animals on a screen. I don't believe I have the right to physical acccess to every animal on the planet.

So yes I watch clips, but I love dogs and cats sooooooo much that I refuse to own one.

Notice I also have no kids.......

Because you don't believe in keeping them in captivity for the amusement of their parents?

I think I may have missed your point. What was it, again?

Would hate to leave them in the shit we are leaving behind.

It's the empathy I'm comparing.

Yes, but talking about dogs and cats that already exist? I'm afraid neither dogs nor cats can do too well without owners, in fact these animals quite enjoy human companionship.
