Passed by H&M yesterday and got a little bit of a shock. For some reason, I was convinced big international clothing stores didn't change prices according to countries (probably influenced by the ZARA price tags).

The same shirt I bought in Portugal last month for 14 € costs 30 CHF. The coat I got for 25€ was 70CHF.

Last time I checked the banks, 1 € was not worth 0.50 CHF.

I knew clothes here were more expensive, but this is ridiculous...
Looking at the Esprit website I couldn't believe that they wanted CHF 179 for a pair of trousers. Back home, Esprit is a average high street brand. I then looked at the .co.uk and a colleague looked at their Spanish site - half price

I need a whole new wardrobe and i'm waiting until we go to Spain in a couple of weeks. I was thinking about flying to London just for clothes shopping.

That's what I do when I go visit my parents in Portugal... I literally go with an empty bag (actually I take 2 luggages, one inside the other) and buy new clothes for the next two seasons there. Even the freaking Calvin Klein dresses are cheaper <.<

Better remember to remove the price tags though, or you might get trouble coming back

I buy them in Germany for this exact reason. Their idea of the money exchange isn't the same of the banks obviously....

It's not difficult to feed a family on 50 quid a week when two of them are made of plastic, one is a dead dog, and the eldest one is 6.

It's just expensive. You just have to deal with it. Most Swiss people don't eat out a lot because it is too expensive.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

I have a good one. After a night of heavy drinking i must have had a bad kebab or something, since i vomited on my friends carpet.

It was a crappy old carpet, allthough big, around 2x4 metres.

The next day i went to have it dry cleaned. The lady could not give me a price estimate, "es ist pro kvadratmeter" she said, but the price per square metre was not availible. Whatever, I though, hung over and cranky, just clean the damn thing.

I went to pick it up a week later and it was 179 CHF. I couldve bought 4 new similar carpets for that.

Lesson learned: Puke in toilet, not on carpet.

Hey you're not qualified to make statements like that! Leave it to the professionals.

Clearly, either that or the sight of the ugly old carpet.

Thank you for providing me with this calculation, now please travel back in time and tell me that just before i give them the rug. Or rather, go back and remove the carpet just before i puke. Or rather, go back 2-3 hours more and remind me that jaeger bombs should be consumed with moderation.

ok, wow, sorry for your injury, yes switzerland is over priced for cetain things, yet I say almost everything, because almost everything is emported, like if we live on an island, The only thing I find worh more than the money value is the FOOD, other than that I order, clothes, shoes, even some furniture online and its like if i was still in New York City,, if you want to save on cosmetics, you can find a lot of cuponds in the paper and some magazine that give good savings,, peace and feel better

...yet somehow, when I lived in the UK (you know, an actual island) where everything was also imported, it still managed to be a fraction of the cost in Switzerland.

Isn't it better to leave the labels on and reclaim the tax?

Hotels in London and in the UK generally are way more expensive than in CH, honest.
... and, in London at least, are pretty miserable. London has it too easy overcharging undiscerning tourists. Other parts of the UK have some fabulous hotels though.

The same can be said of food.

Should be a piece of cake for you then to open your own chain with better and cheaper products. I mean, it's basically a licence to print money... what are you waiting for?

Re: Swiss rip-offs

Food is rip-off ... and I know what I'm talking about.

From tourists in Paris who have just ordered and swallowed their KFC's 2 x boxter meals with chips and cooldrinks + 5-pieces of chicken, mayo and ketchup inclusive for only EU19 and for dessert McFlurry and McWrap for EU6. The other day lekker 2 x kebabs with lamb and beef inclusive drinks for under EU20 for two.

Tomorrow either Mex Tex or grill house, perhaps tartar or seafood - all very affordable. We still have to decide.
