Re: Swiss rip-offs

Angela, fish and crab meat you can usually get in Portuguese stores at a reasonable price. Just bear in mind it will be frozen, though. Quality is usually good (the owners might not speak German though, which sometimes makes me want to slap fellow countrymen here )

I went to manor looking for crab meat, I found they were selling crab legs for 120 CHF the kilo, WTF? I mean crab legs have what 30 grams of meat? I also found crab meat in cans, 18 CHF each...I did not buy any and went to Germany the following day where I paid 3.50 euros per can...the same can...ARGH!
Hey, do you know how hard it is to import cheap useless crap!? In a can?! Do you?! I didn't think so. What about all the marketing that goes into convincing foreigners about 'Swiss quality'? You think that's cheap? <Insert grumbling Swiss-German expletive that I don't know>

I find dentistry to be prohibitively expensive. It's about the only necessity I can't afford here. It's depressing when I consider how much money I spent on getting braces as an adult (not to mention the humiliation)... And now not being able to maintain my teeth properly. I miss Canada for that, almost everyone has some kind of group dental coverage through their employer.
Fully agree. A month ago, I had to pay CHF 475 for one short check up, and a second visit for a filling replacement. I wouldn't even pay EUR 200 for that back in Holland.
I also noticed the same dentist raised his multiplier from 3.60 to 3.80 without informing his customers (or at least me).

when I came to Zürich the first time, 2 pork chops costed 19 CHF, when I could get 6 of them for 4 euros in Dresden.
Blimey, where are you going for your pork chops?? I don't normally pay any more than about CHF 8 for a pack of two from Migros or Coop, less if it's on "Aktion".

Mangoes.

I almost fainted when I saw that it was 6CHF per kilo when I first arrived. The big juicy ones were about 50 rappen for 1 back home.

You kidding me? I never paid less than 14 CHF (and that was in promotion) for 2 pork chops in Migros or Coop (the big thick ones with bone). I am not talking about the "Prix Garantie" though, but regular meat.

Do you know how many cows have to be sacrificed to get mangoes to grow in Switzerland?

Re: Swiss rip-offs

Actually Sushi is a very good point. I have still to find a really good Sushi Restaurant in Zürich, since even the overpriced ones are not really gorgeous. First thing I do when going to Dresden to visit family is booking dinner in my favourite Sushi place.

I found mangoes to be not too bad compared to the UK. Can get a box of 6 indian or Pakistani mangoes for about 12-13CHF

Re: Swiss rip-offs

If I could be bothered I could send my brother to our local sushi restaurant in London, order a giant sashimi platter for 4, Fedex it to me here and it would still be:

1. better quality
2. fresher
3. cheaper

than anything you can get here.

P.S. Let me know when you do it. Maybe we can chuck a couple of curries in there too.

The large papayas in Globus are 14 chfs. Every time I see them I'm reminded of this Seinfeld stand up (from 2mins 18secs)

No need, I make my own curries. Unfortunately I use a lot of paneer, spinch and chickpeas in my curries because I don't like to disrespect an animal that retails at 15000 chuffs. He must have been important.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

Facials (none under 100-120 CHF, of course it is luxury so I don't complain) I have stopped pampering myself.

Parking! (Well that's costly all over the world, so I don't complain either)

So coming back to the basics..

Salads ( I am not talking about heavy salads with cheese)
Normal or even small sized salad.. nuss salat or green salad which cost 7 chf (even in spar!)
not to mention the thai takeaways they too cost 12-15 chf for ''take aways''

I am often confused when I am shopping abroad Switzerland has changed my mindset/scale on what's expensive.

On my trip to Dubai, I bought a nice handbag (200 Dirhams approx 45 chf) .
It was fairly inexpensive for me, but local (dubai) friends were not so sure about it They thought I could bargain

Quality wise it was atleast 10 times better than what you get would at C&A or H&M here priced at 45 /50 CHF

Though I admit sales here sometimes you do get some good deals (at times)!

Amen to that. I no longer go to sushi restaurants here because I always end up being ill. Except for one Japanese supermarket in Geneva, where the sushi is fresh (and the nori is crisp), delicious and fairly-priced... and I'm never sick after!
