Re: Swiss rip-offs

This happened a couple of years ago now so I'm a bit vague with the numbers.

I ordered a sky box online with a quad LNB to split the signal four ways. The cost was about 200 pound for the box and 4 pound for the LNB. When the box was delivered I had to pay about 40CHF for duty etc. No problem so far.

But when I opened the box, no LNB. So I called the company and they sent one over separately. Unfortunately they attached the original invoice so Swisspost wanted to charge me 40CHF again for duty. I tried to explain that what I had received in the second shipment was only worth 6CHF but all they could say was that the company could send a letter and explain and they they would just charge a 30CHF processing fee.

As I was in a hurry to get every thing working, I had already arranged for the local TV company to come and do all the wiring. So I called them and asked them to bring an LNB.

When I eventually got the itemized bill for installation, I was just a little shocked to see that the item which was originally going to cost my 6CHF and which I refused to pay an extra 40 CHF in duty for, was provided by the local company for a mere 68CHF.

changing batteries for a normal watch costs 40 CHF... This is free in any other country...
Er.... I don't think so. When we lived in Antwerp Belgium, to change a normal watch battery cost €9.50 then, and that was five years ago.

Not in the UK it isn't! If you have a good quality Swiss watch they insist on sending it back to have it cleaned and all the seals guaranteed- cost about £100+ min. I go to my wonderful Indian watchmaker in Leicester - so friendly and knowledgeable and pay about a fiver.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

My biggest bugbear regarding Swiss rip-offs is the customs rip-off. I order a lot of stuff from eBay, most of it really cheap, but the charges can be ridiculous - if for any reason the customs people decide to check your particular parcel, they CHARGE you for doing so!! There are up to three separate payments and the total can be more than the value of the goods!!

I don't know where you are getting your batteries for free. I have only gotten a free battery when my battery failed in the first year I owned the watch.

Otherwise, I love changing my battery in Switzerland as they send my Tissot watch to a technician that can actually work on the tripled sealed crown and reposition the hands which get miss aligned due to impacts with solid surfaces. (concrete )

And I get all of this for around 40chf? In my world this is a really good bargain.

Sorry to sideline the thread by giving an example of a good deal in the CH,...

I know, but even with the charges my goods are always cheaper than I could get them in Switzerland, (but usually I couldn't get the choice here anyway).

It is actually cheaper to buy lindt chocolate in Australia (other side of the world) than it is to buy it in Switzerland where its actually made!!! Work that one out!

Funny thing is I used to buy Lindt chocolate all the time in Australia, but now its too expensive to buy here in Switzerland!

Soon as I move back to Australia i'm going to start eating Lindt chocolate again hahaha

95 Octane Unleaded Gasoline is about chf 1.75 per litre at the station near my house in Collonge-Bellerive. 6 km away, at the Rive ronde pont parking garage, it is chf 2.05 per litre!

Oh, prescription glasses are also prohibitively expensive in CH! Never going to have them done here again.

We visit our dentist in the UK for a check up every Christmas, and just pray that all is ok. Otherwise, we would book more flights home for future treatment.
Fingers crossed, so far all is well.

That is a tragedy.

Maybe you should write a strongly worded letter
