What sort of doctor was it, where and what tests were requested and done???

I went to see a Senior orthopeadic surgeon last month- he spent at least 30 mins listening to my medical history and injuries, thoroughly examined me and tested knee movement, etc. He offered to do MRI and x-rays but said there was no need as such, as with his experience, examination and history- he could tell my knee was well by its sell-by-date and would need replacing at some point. He advised to keep as active as poss, as I do now- that physio would be a waste of time- and to come back to him when I am ready for a knee replacement. Got the bill today on return from hols.... an outrageous

35.95 chf

Out of interest was that the total cost of the consultation or just your share of the costs?

That's cool but I remember having an ear infection and between the GP appointment (involved her looking in my ear and taking my temp) and the antibiotics and nose spray I was down 210chf...then another 50chf for a second course of antibiotics....thankfully the pharmacy gave on repeat instead of going back to the doctor.

So 1200 for an ambulance in a country I make 4 times as much for the same job back at home? Yeah, not bad.
Yep, plus the Swiss have insurance for everything and it's always mandatory to contract one in most situations.
It's apparently a common thing to have an insurance covering all damages on a cheap car and to buy "passenger insurance" which is needed only if your passengers have no "accident insurance", which applies only to... foreigners visiting Switzerland.

Total cost- we have to pay everything up front and get part reimbursement later, after franchise.

Well that us very surprising especially for a senior specialist orthopaedic surgeon.
Did you get a detailed breakdown of the costs?

I'm interested because as you know we have had extensive experience in this area over the past few months and on examining the copies of the bills we received ( originals sent directly to insurance) 35chf would barely cover a 10 minute consultation with a registrar ( the consultant was more than that).

Yeah, but did you get the registrar drunk on absinthe afterwards?

Do they have senior orthopaedic surgeons in the country?

We have to go into the 'big town' for that sort of stuff as there are only the bumpkin sort of doctors around here.

In the country the words "doctor" and "vet" are interchangeable.

He comes to visit our local hospital once a week for us country bumpkins. No idea why he charged so little- but I am not complaining. He listened, he examined me thoroughly- I accepted his advice to to have expensive MRI or Xrays- and he told me he would operate when I was ready. Shook hands, done.

The bumpkin comment wasn't aimed at you.
I was more interested in the breakdown of the costs actually. Are they not itemised on the bill? Our bills always gives a detailed list of all the charges and as far as I'm aware they are based on the tarmed rates so I am genuinely interested as to what he charged you for. ( by PM if you prefer)

Re: Swiss rip-offs

just minimum consultation time. Will show it to you when we next see each other. Probably would have been very different if I had questionned his judgement and not accepted advice and asked for MRI and x-rays.

Removal fees. Quote for moving 15km nearly as much as transporting the same amount of stuff from England. It's like being mugged. Repeatedly.

I cannot find a quote at the moment, the Bundesrat (Government) have stated they will not cancel the cosy cartells in foodstuff make up and other things. This means we will continue shopping in Germany & France.

You can not find a quote because it was the National Council (Parliament) who dismissed a new cartel law.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

I walked in to a photography shop yesterday in Nyon where they tried to charge me 35 CHF for 4 passport pictures. I said au revoir and ended up paying 8 CHF for 8 pictures in one of the photo boots.

Seriously... 35 CHF for 4 small pictures? That should be considered a crime to humanity.
