Re: Swiss rip-offs

Costs of sending registered mail, envelopes, import and "handling" charges for stuff from abroad, often equaling the value of the item being brought in.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

I think it is interesting that some people find Switzerland expensive and compare to London or Germany cities.

I have to make you a deal: Go to Porto in Portugal (ok i know it is unfair since minimum wage is 450 euros/month).

You have a lot of place where parking is not paid. You can diner near the sea, fresh food, literally a 500grams beef, 1 bottle of wine for 2, desert and pay 20 euros at most.

The most expensive restaurants (nouvelle cousin, japanese and so on) are 40 at most for person.

You can buy Levis jeans by 70 euros, national ones (same quality but european) by 35/50.

The problem of course is who lives there because for tourism is a great country :d

A typical restaurant 'menu du jour' here is about CH15
Here as well.

However, I go home for lunch (though I don't eat lunch, usually I work on the bikes, go for a ride, or start organizing dinner, got to do SOMETHING for 90 minutes!)

The problem with Portugal is I liked spending the evening at the Porto bars in Lisbon, either after dinner or as dinner. Not cheap.

Most of it's been covered, but the other thing that annoys me is just the pissy charges for any official paperwork for almost f**k all effort.
EG: went to get a credit rating document from Stadt Zurich the other day for an apartment application.
17 bleedin' francs for the 30 second's work required by the woman to type in my name, move her mouse & click print and hand me a black & white A4 laser print.
Umm, what part of this don't my taxes cover???
Absolutely agree. "That'll be CHF50 to get the certificate that confirms that you've already told us you've left Canton Geneva".

I don't think so! I've told you I've left Geneva - hey, you even acknowledged it! - and you still want me to pay you CHF50 for the 'officialness' of it?! You can go stick a baguette up where....

Anyone who thinks that Switzerland is expensive really ought to spend some time in Norway or Corsica.

Re: Swiss rip-offs

I paid in oerlikon for a pair of vibramsoles 71 chf , going to the hairdresser
cost 38 sfr.
Most weird for me is migrolino at Zurich HB :
A 0,5 L Coke cost 3.50 sfr, downstairs at migros (or at coop opposite the Mainstation) only 1.10 sfr

The SBB does not accept my rail plus card for the journey to Konstanz, so
head over to the German Railway (Deutsche Bahn ) at Militärstrasse 36:
The return ticket to Konstanz cost you at the SBB 60 sfr, at the Deutsche Bahn
only 40 Euros, around 50 chf(you can pay with euros at the deutsche Bahn), with a Rail Plus card(25 % less= 30 Euros or 37.50 sfr).

Re: Swiss rip-offs

Franc-ly, CH is expensive - I had better value for slightly more money in Denmark - not to mention half priced McDonald's.

Sometimes, it is still worth it to go to Milan and have a hearty meal for EUR10 ( buffet ) or to DE for shopping.

Well, believe it or not, the chosen restaurant was within the Swiss line. When dinner was over, we all agreed that the food was average and overpriced.
Oh god, just remembered about the S-Bahn night charge and the corresponding fine ( you still pay over different zones for the night charge ie more than once per night ).

I once read that Zurich is known as a "Shopper's Paradise," which absolutely blew my mind! Not only are the selections here absolutely HORRIBLE, but the prices are a complete rip-off. I do honestly think that Zurich (and perhaps all of Switzerland) is biased in favor of the rich. Maybe the prices are kept high in order to keep the rich in and the poor out so that Switzerland can maintain its status as the richest country in all of Europe?
Just a theory.

Hi all,

We all know that Switzerland is expensive, and I'm certainly not complaining about prices in general. However, some things just seem insanely over-priced, more than just being expensive "because it's Switzerland". I tried to look for a thread about this in particular, but nothing.

So I got my doctor's bill for when my neck seized up a few weeks ago. My doctor is actually pretty cheap comparatively, but I got charged 70CHF for a bloody foam neck brace! Seems a little excessive for a piece of foam with velcro attached.

What things have you found here that are excessively (i.e. unreasonably) over-priced?

On the other side of the coin, there are plenty of things that are comparatively cheap... but that would be a whole other thread.
You mean your doctor does some work really for only CHF 70.-- ? Here in Zürich, for CHF 70.--, the doctor will look at you, take your personal details, and advise you about the next time for the real thing !

I find furniture prices here to be very amusing and noticed two furniture shops near Paradeplatz that have recently closed down. The first offered me a plain wooden desk for CHF 7000 and the second required an appointment to visit Maybe market forces finally prevailed!

Another reason NOT to live in Zurich - here for the standard 70CHF you get a nice welcome, a proper examination and ensuing discussion + a friendly chat

Well, this is the calculation here :
Nice welcome = CHF 25.--
Proper examination = CHF 125.--
Discussion = CHF 20.--
Friendly chat = CHF 10.--
=
Total = CHF 180.--

But of course, things in the province always are cheaper

I also find ice cream crazily expensive, but it does taste good as long as it hasn't been improperly handled in-store and developed ice crystals. I tried to take some back once and was told 'but that's normal'!! I suppose that's what makes me angry-paying a lot of money for stuff that turns out to be inedible or defective. That's just robbery imho.
That happened to me too in Lutry. They also told me it was "normal" and I told it most certainly was not and that they can talk to the food safety guy when he gets there. I called and spoke to the food safety people and they confirmed this was not "normal".

Having said that, this isn't a "Swiss thing".

As for the rest of the conversation, I don't worry so much about whether things are cheaper or more expensive in terms of price. I think of it as a % of income. People come to Buenos Aires with Euros & US$ and think it's cheap here. But for people who actually live & earn here, it's very expensive and I would even say it's more expensive as a % of income than Switzerland.

I thought the 8 CHF organic celery stalk was the most expensive thing in my first couple of months in CH, but it turned out that the plain white curtain in my temporary apartment that cost 2,000 CHF was a lot more painfully expensive!

The biggest rip-off was cleaning an already super clean apartment for 1,000 CHF. I swear the Swiss love to rip us ex-pats off!
Need anybody to remove snow ,$ Can. 1200.00square foot .

Anyone which thinks everything is to expensive ,open up your own business. Buy or rent some retail space, get all the required license , pay all the taxes, and hire staff . Give me your addresses and tell me you sell me the stuff cheaper then I can buy it in Carp Ontario , I will be your costumer

Re: Swiss rip-offs

I think the question is change of culture. As expat or travellers we have wide info.

For example i have worked in Porto, Portugal (born and lived 27 years), in Coimbra (a smaller city from Portugal 18 months), Lisbon (8 months), Suzhou in China (1 monht), Richmond, Washington and New york (1 month on site).

In Europe with low cost we can do top notch quality of life. Working in Switzerland and Spend a weekend in Portugal (multiple outlets with Reebok tennis for 40 euros).

The question is not if it expensive due to tax, worker salaries. In Europe prices are in a wide range.

A hair cut in North Portugal is 5.6 euros for men and can be 20 euros for woman (with treatment, brushing and so whatoever).

These kind of topics i think will be natural. Paying as you say 200 chf for a quick assessment is not natural to me.

For example Switzerland does not have RyanAir and i can not find Flights for Porto, Portugal for 25 euros as in London, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan.

Why? People in London earns less? I do not think so.

Another rip off, I reckon the most expensive item in the world can be found in Switzreland - childcare.

I will be paying CHF1680 for my baby to go to creche for 3 days / week, ie. CHF140 per day. Out of the salary at 60% I will be getting 60% in the end...

Can any other country beat that??? A friend in Frankfurt has managed secure childcare at EUR 200/month for 5 mornings
Notes to self:
  • Relocate fully stocked up till next visit home
  • Do not declare illegal nanny at customs
