| | Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia | Quote: | | | | | It's just a toilet and even in NYC you wouldn't get some asshats grumbling about manners and how the country is going to hell because these damn furriners need to pee just like everyone else. What would they say if it were a child? Are the Swiss such incredible rigid automatons that human decency comes second only after following the rules?
When you get that sort of treatment as a foreigner/expat, it can be very difficult to simply move on. I lived in another country where an old woman came to pet my dog whilst I was walking him. I had only just arrived so I wasn't very fluent in the local language and politely said that I didn't understand her....when she proceeded to spit on me and yell something about f-ing foreigners. It tainted my experience of a country that has, over the years, become much more xenophobic (or more open to expressing it) and I'm glad I escaped. It's an experience I will never forget.
When people humiliate you on the basis of your foreignness and no other, it's not something you can simply shrug off or forget. | | | | | So what are you going to do about it? Carry a chip on your shoulder and view every native with contempt because they possibly might be thinking in their heads: "ugh, not another foreigner?!"
I've been a "foreigner" in the UK, Nederlands and now Switzerland. My first week in the UK, I had a beer bottle thrown at me followed by the words: "chink, go home" - amongst other incidents through out the years that I've lived, worked and studied there, but I take away great memories of that place and till today, the best memories of my life always lead back to that country. Why let a few ignorant twats spoil it?
PS: you can go back to your usual handle now

How about take out cellphone and activate the record function, record any word they were saying.
IMHO, they had the right to not let the wife use the toilet, but they didn't have the right to insult people like that. If any words related to discrimination, there should be a chance to sue them, no ? | Quote: | | | | | I'm truly shocked.
My wife walks out of tram 7 at Wollishofen and urgently needs to go to the bathroom.
The public bathrooms there costs 1 CHF, which is reasonable. However, at this time, she doesn't have 1CHF available.
So she walks in to Cafe Wollishofen and kindly explains the situation as asks if she could use their bathroom.
These 2 women working there starts to insult my wife saying that she is not well mannered, isn't brought up well and needs to be tought how to behave.
And then they go on about how Switzerland should stop letting foreigners in to their country. (My wife speaks fluent German, but with a slight accent)
Jeez, I'm shocked. What kind of xenophobia is that?
So if you are in for getting insulted please visit Cafe Wollishofen (unless you are a Swiss native of course)
Has anybody else experienced anything similar? | | | | | | This user would like to thank Fei for this useful post:

It's the "complaint forum" not the "solution" one!
Anyway then we will have to deal with 2 new topics complaining how a foreigner managed to put 2 rude staff in troubles and how it's unfair, etc... | This user groans at CorsebouTheReturn for this post:

If they did use offensive and discriminatory language, you can report them to the police and they can then press criminal charges.
No, there are no million dollar compensations either in Switzerland.

Hey!
The "newbie" learnt how to transform his frustations and anger in the forum!
He learned the use of the "GROAN button"!!!!
Yipee
I'm so honored. I'm proud to be at the beginning of that long path of virtual anger relief program, and complete virtual frustation release.
See? it's much easier than actually do something about those 2 allegedly rude and xenophobe staff.
Well done, you're not a complete member of this forum.

.. | | | | | You are rite. This is CH, where is you don't read your contract properly you buy your property looking like a prison because contractors didn't bother paying further for super expensive experts. To each system their own, I wouldn't make fun of US, although I know you probably really just wanted to state the obvious. There are crazy law suites all over.
I feel bad for OP who's probably shell-shocked, gentle wife got some jerks offloading on her. I think I would write a letter to them, show it to the wife and send it, just to feel better, posting a copy to cantonal business office, there is a center like that, quoting their phrases they used and explaining that simple explanation would suffice and that OP as foreigner simply expected the level of service they are used to from abroad. Nothing will probably change, but might make OP feel better.
I am glad OP took the criticism quite lightly and adapted to level of biting we offer, free of charge, hahaha..
Now, OP be aware that groan fests are not permitted here. Thanks and good luck recovering.

The country I was in is considerably smaller and far, far more xenophobic than one mere story can relate and harbours a good deal more than a few ignorant twats. If the country had fewer of them I might still be there today.
And my 'usual handle'? I'm new here so you might have me confused with someone else.
