The country I was in is considerably smaller and far, far more xenophobic than one mere story can relate and harbours a good deal more than a few ignorant twats.
Not allowed here anymore. This is the EF-USA ROCKS! edition. If you feel offended by this, I just paid my judicial insurance . I will be using it shortly for the carpal tunnel syndrome I got typing this post.

Well great then.

-Record them and make a scandal to their manager when it's crowded with people.

-Go there make scandal to their boss

-Fax them to try to reach the boss instead of the "middleman"

-etc....
Great way to restore the image foreigners seem to have in that place.

That's good, I wasn't warning, merely explaining to a newbie.
Now, I second the suggestions to see our intro subforum, too.

*sigh again*

You do realize that whether the specific case of the micro waved pet is true or not, it still doesn’t change the fact that there are way too many real cases of stupid law-suits coming from America, right? Like the Liebeck v. McDonald's, for example? I was trying to express an idea, which is not something I am proud of, of associating America to ridiculous law-suits, which in no way is implying an insult to Americans, actually quite the opposite. You don’t need to come all Klugscheisser

But then again, I have enough experience with forums to know how this works…

it's not a stupid law suit. it's negligent to serve scalding hot coffee to drive through customers who are more likely than normal restaurant patrons to spill on themselves. (in fact now that i read the wiki article, they knew people were spilling and burning themselves and had settled with scores of them, so their refusal to deal with the problem shows they were reckless and not simply negligent)

'stupid' law suits like that serve to refine the law by testing its boundaries.

anyway to get back on topic, to hell with this cafe and its employees. EF is some piece of work, isnt it? the OP's wife politely asks to use the toilet and gets called a god damned foreigner and people rush to defend and justify the employee's actions? remarkable.

Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

Never ever enter a restaurant with knees crossed showing obvious distress!

Toilets are usually always located at the rear of establishments. So you sashay in, drop your jacket over the chair of the nearest empty table ..... walk up to/past any handy waitress without pausing and say, with raised eyebrows "Coffee please and where`s the toilets" (no question mark).

So you are officially a customer and not someone vagrant wanting to use their toilet.

Oh, the 1fr charge? Without crossing knees take out some paper money, hand it to waitress, tell them you don`t keep small change and to open the toilet door ... please, thank you, and keep walking.

If that doesn`t work, sit down (it helps to hold it in) and wait for the change from the coffee order.

Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

Maybe I misunderstood the first post, but the lady in question didn't have any money on her at all, so how would she pay for a coffee?
Or if she did have money with her, why didn't she ask for change to use the other WC?

Ooops, yes. An empty wallet? Nah, surely not! Must have been everything except that Sfr1 coin?

Much like finding the correct coin to get yourself a shopping trolley.

Ah well. If the wallet was truly empty let that be a lesson learned .... Never spend your last Sfr1!

It's unclear whether she didn't have any money or any coins.

What is clear is that different people have different natural reactions to the same situation. I would think it perfectly normal to go to a nearby restaurant and ask to use their toilets (particularly if you explain the situation). Others would try to find change and use the public toilets. Either is a normal reaction depending on how/where you were raised. In no case would I expect to be subjected to xenophobia.

This is probably extremely racist of me, but every time someone talks about suing, I have a little devil on my shoulder telling me "he's got to be American". For my obviously stupid stereotype, I ask Americans for forgiveness...
Ha ha... I'm American and I certainly take no offense! I think it's very true that Americans are too quick to sue and are, in general, willing to make a buck at anyone's expense. Unfortunately, this is the American Way.

Side note -- what I find most disturbing is when someone has nothing bad to say about their own culture but instead are blindly patriotic.

Yes and it's stupid to "hold" a scalding cup of coffee (which did have a warning by the way) between your legs in a car (usually where you are strapped in and the seat slightly inclined backwards, so making a quick get-away difficult in case of a spill) and take the lid off.

I would point out that at the time of the accident, the car was not moving.

I'm sorry, but this woman was stupid and decided that it wasn't her fault, so took it out on McDonald's - a classic example of people unable to take responsibility for their own actions.

If I buy a sharp kitchen knife and cut my finger off, or drop it on my foot and cut myself, while cutting carrots in the kitchen, who's fault is that? The people who sold me the knife, the people who sold me the carrots, my wife for talking to me while I'm cutting the carrots?

Nope. It's mine. If I use the knife, I have to be responsible for its correct use and not anyone else.

And to stay on topic:

I agree. I was just pointing out why it might not have been possible to act in the way Smoky suggested.

Btw, may I also take the opportunity to tell people that the code for the Stauffacher McD's is their postcode, particularly handy at the half time break at the metropol cinema opposite.

That's the problem with the world these days, women don't "Sashay" any more. But that's a different complaint.
