This is exactly the actionable offense here. Coffee should not be made with water that hot, because it will just taste bitter when brought above 87 degrees C.
Has anyone bought a class action against a teashop for using boiling water? Though I'd consider bring one against all the catering establishments here for not using boiling water.

These instances are when you thank your lucky stars you have a small child with you. No one turns down a bathroom to a child in need .

Now, given the choice between a tiny cafe, and the irish pub across the street... I know which I would choose when seeking sympathy to use a bathroom.
I was going to point this out, too, but I only know what time the Shamrock closes, not when they open.

Sounds like the staff at this particular cafe might still want to know where the child was born.

I have a feeling they'd only dare if the child was with her mom.

I got two really strange "groans" on other posts and have no idea why. But, hey, I took it like a lady, smiled and let it go. Life's too short to dwell on the unkindly.
Wear your groans with pride.

The only people on this forum without any groans are either utter newbies or spineless spongers who won't lean out and say anything that somebody might, maybe, disagree with.

Maybe I misunderstood the first post, but the lady in question didn't have any money on her at all, so how would she pay for a coffee?
Or if she did have money with her, why didn't she ask for change to use the other WC?
She thought she could pay a 1 Frank WC charge with a credit card.

Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

Places I have been with public access toilets:

Manor (usually top floor or by restaurant)
Coop (either in restaurant or near flowers/magazines)
Bau & Hobby
Migros
Migros Garden Center
Jumbo (at back of store)
Hornbach (same as above)
Large Department stores such as Loeb

I've also had luck at the tourist office in the train station. They gave me a jeton when the automated toilet's change machine was out of order. Perhaps they have those for cases such as your wife's as well? Though somehow I'm sure she'll never leave the house with an empty wallet again.

Sorry you had a bad experience. If you're not able to put it behind you, I would recommend frequenting the cafe anyhow. Just don't tip, and take five minutes to place your order when they're busy and change your mind as they're about to walk away, or even order one thing at a time at the table so the servers have to make several trips. Don't forget to pay entirely with small change. This will neither endear you to the staff nor get you kicked out, but it may make you feel slightly better.

Nobody can humiliate me for my foreignness because I'm not foreign, no matter where I go. I am and remain English. Almost everybody else around me is foreign and I don't tire to point it out to them when the situation necessitates it.

Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

I'm surprised that patronage or money is required to take care of nature's business. Sure, you wouldn't just walk into any fine establishment and try to use the loo... but, where I come from if you gotta whiz there are plenty of public options that don't cost anything... including gas stations and McDonald's, as well as road-side rest areas.

What always drove me nuts about Europe as a tourist was that, you try to stay hydrated, but then there's nowhere to piss unless you shell out some cash.

I combine that experience with my experience of frequent and often urgent need for a loo while visiting some under-developed countries, and I just have to say...

I look forward to the day when a tourist takes an urgent, big, steaming and stanky splatter in the middle of a cafe because they couldn't find a free loo when they needed it.
