Bassiq has become a little unpopular
Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

I'm truly shocked.

My wife walks out of tram 7 at Wollishofen and urgently needs to go to the bathroom.
The public bathrooms there costs 1 CHF, which is reasonable. However, at this time, she doesn't have 1CHF available.
So she walks in to Cafe Wollishofen and kindly explains the situation as asks if she could use their bathroom.
These 2 women working there starts to insult my wife saying that she is not well mannered, isn't brought up well and needs to be tought how to behave.
And then they go on about how Switzerland should stop letting foreigners in to their country. (My wife speaks fluent German, but with a slight accent)

Jeez, I'm shocked. What kind of xenophobia is that?

So if you are in for getting insulted please visit Cafe Wollishofen (unless you are a Swiss native of course)

Has anybody else experienced anything similar?

Welcome to EF!

A good advice for life: it's easier to apologize than to ask for permission.

Forgot to add the most juicy bit; they insisted that my wife should show them her purse to prove that she didn't have 1 CHF for the public bathroom.

Yes, I did just signed up to post that. You are very "observant"
No, no. Not at all. Don't live in Wollishofen, have never been there before, and after this have no intention to visit again.

Mistake #2: Any Swiss wouldn't be seen dead without at least 300 CHF in their wallet (prob 500 CHF if in Zurich)

Maybe they've had a run of people nipping in to use the loo and not buying a coffee and are fed up with it. Many places in Zurich now either have a note up saying you have to be a paying customer or you have to ask for a code to access the toilet.

Probably a bit of an over-reaction on their part and asking to inspect the contents of your wife's purse sounds a bit weird but, unfortunately, Switzerland doesn't hold a monopoly on the world's weirdness so you're going to find odd behaviour wherever you go.

Re: Cafe Wollishofen, xenophobia

Bassiq, did you call the Cafe to speak to the owner or did you plan to visit to challenge them on the way your wife was treated? If she is very upset then its probably the kind of action that might comfort her.
